Literatur und Religion - Paradigmen der Forschung (Hardcover, 1. Aufl. 2023): Andreas Mauz, Daniel Weidner Literatur und Religion - Paradigmen der Forschung (Hardcover, 1. Aufl. 2023)
Andreas Mauz, Daniel Weidner
R3,217 Discovery Miles 32 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Diaspora and Law - Culture, Religion, and Jurisprudence beyond Sovereignty: Liliana Ruth Feierstein, Daniel Weidner Diaspora and Law - Culture, Religion, and Jurisprudence beyond Sovereignty

Today, law is no longer homogenous or unquestioned. Different overlapping legal systems constantly interfere with one another, both on an international level, in complex transnational contexts such as the European Union or human rights law, but also in the context of cultural diversity or conflicts between religious norms and civil institutions, between minorities and the power of the state. On the other hand, the neutrality of law is also under growing pressure, be it from different global transnational players, or from within nation states where calls are made to adapt law to the will of "the people." The heated European debate on the "refugee crisis" has made it manifest that law is more necessary than ever and yet fundamentally contested, perhaps even caught in contradictions and self-limitations. At the same time, the current perspective on legal problems allows us to address issues of diversity and the role of Europe in the globalized world more clearly. The articles of this book take these recent developments and debates as a starting point to discuss from the perspective of different disciplines the pressing question of how to live together in the new millennium and how to figure the long history of law before, besides, and after the dominant paradigm of state law.

The Father of Jewish Mysticism - The Writing of Gershom Scholem (Paperback): Daniel Weidner The Father of Jewish Mysticism - The Writing of Gershom Scholem (Paperback)
Daniel Weidner; Translated by Sage Anderson
R998 Discovery Miles 9 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Father of Jewish Mysticism offers an incisive look at the early life and writings of Gershom Scholem (1897-1982), the father of modern Jewish mysticism and a major 20th-century Jewish intellectual. Daniel Weidner offers the first full-length study, published in English, of Scholem's thought. Scholem, a historian ofthe Kabbalah and sharp critic of Jewish assimilation, played a major role in the study and popularization of Jewish mysticism. Through his work on the Kabbalah, Scholem turned the closed world of mystical texts into a force for Jewish identity. Skillfully drawing on Scholem's early diaries and writings, The Father of Jewish Mysticism introduces a young, soon-to-be legendary intellectual in search of himself and Judaism.

Judaism, Liberalism, and Political Theology (Paperback): Randi Rashkover, Martin Kavka Judaism, Liberalism, and Political Theology (Paperback)
Randi Rashkover, Martin Kavka; Contributions by Robert Erlewine, Eric Jacobson, Gregory Kaplan, …
R854 Discovery Miles 8 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Judaism, Liberalism, and Political Theology provides the first broad encounter between modern Jewish thought and recent developments in political theology. In opposition to impetuous associations of Judaism and liberalism and charges that Judaism cannot engender a universal political order, the essays in this volume propose a new and richly detailed engagement between Judaism and the political. The vexed status of liberalism in Jewish thought and Judaism in political theology is interrogated with recourse to thinking from across the Continental tradition.
