Since his now famous appearance on the literary stage in 1968
novelist, playwright and poet, Peter Handke has remained on the
forefront of the literary vanguard, having earned the praise and
recognition of critics in Europe and North America alike. In fact,
in a review essay of September 2000, "The New York Review of Books"
called him "the premier prose stylist in the German language, and
one of post-war Europe's most recognisable literary figures." Since
the publication of his early theatrical works, Handke has gone on
to publish over twenty-five prose novels, as well as additional
works for the theatre, collections of poetry, diaries and essays.
His works have ranged in style from the French influenced nouveau
roman of the late 1960s to works characteristic of the New
Subjectivity movement in West Germany in the 1970s, while his
novels and stories of the 1980s and 1990s exhibited a new-found
appreciation for narrative and issues of storytelling. He has also
published a series of polemical essays on the war in Yugoslavia
which have been criticised severely by scholars and
intellectuals.;This collection of fourteen essays focuses both on
the genres in which Handke has written, as well as on the thematic
aspects of his work.
To know Puss Junior once is to love him forever That's the way
everyone feels about this adventurous cat who is the son of a very
famous father, Puss in Boots. In the Puss in Boots, Jr series of
ten books written by David Cory and originally published in
1917-1922, Puss Junior discovers that he is the son of the
illustrious Puss in Boots and he begins a journey across Mother
Goose Land to find his famous father. Along the way, Puss Junior
meets characters from children's fiction and nursery rhymes, helps
the weak and downtrodden, and learns something about life from
everyone he meets. Puss Junior actually finds his father in Book
Two, but the books were so popular that David Cory continued to
write eight more adventures. In Book 10, Puss Junior flies with
Mother Goose on her Gander, meets Tommy Tittle Mouse, ten Boy
Scouts, Dr. Austen, Cinderella, Little Nannie Ettigoat, and Yankee
Doodle Dandy. He travels to Babylon, Boston, and the Moon. He makes
a speech, swordfights a bully, and tells stories by the fireplace.
And, of course, Puss Junior meets the Man in the Moon. The original
illustrations by Elizabeth Babcock are included in the stories,
enlarged so they can be colored with colored pencils or crayons.
The Puss in Boots, Jr books are lovely reminders that simple words
can awaken the imaginations of children and adults alike, just as
they did one hundred years ago. The original stories have been
edited to change archaic words and references. Reading level is
second grade but much younger children will enjoy hearing the
stories read to them.
"Stop right here," said the red rooster, "and I'll get out and buy
you a bag of candy." And when he came back he had four bags of
candy. Just think of that! In one bag was sugar-coated carrots for
Billy Bunny, and another bag was full of candied carrots for Uncle
Lucky, and in the bag he gave to Mrs. Mousie were two little
chocolate mice.
