The Unified Learning Model - How Motivational, Cognitive, and Neurobiological Sciences Inform Best Teaching Practices... The Unified Learning Model - How Motivational, Cognitive, and Neurobiological Sciences Inform Best Teaching Practices (Hardcover, 2010 ed.)
Duane F. Shell, David W. Brooks, Guy Trainin, Kathleen M. Wilson, Douglas F. Kauffman, …
R3,393 Discovery Miles 33 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is a book about how humans learn. Our focus is on classroom learning although the principles are, as the name of this book indicates, universal. We are concerned with learning from pre-school to post-graduate. We are concerned with most bu- ness, industrial and military training. We do not address how infants learn how to speak or walk, or how grown-ups improve their tennis swing. We do address all learning described by the word "thought," as well as anything we might try to teach, or instruct in formal educational settings. In education, the words theory and model imply conjecture. In science, these same words imply something that is a testable explanation of phenomena able to predict outcomes of experiments. This book presents a model of learning that the authors offer in the sense of scientists rather than educators. Conjecture implies that information is incomplete, and so it surely is with human learning. On the other hand, we assert that more than enough is known to sustain a "scienti?c" model of learning. This book is not a review of the literature. Instead, it is a synthesis. Scholars and many teachers likely have heard much if not most or even all of the information we use to develop the uni?ed learning model. What you have not read before is a model putting the information together in just this way; this is the ?rst one.

The Group Therapy of Substance Abuse (Hardcover): David W Brook, Henry I. Spitz The Group Therapy of Substance Abuse (Hardcover)
David W Brook, Henry I. Spitz
R2,362 Discovery Miles 23 620 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Gain a practical perspective on group therapy as a treatment for addiction
As more and more researchers and clinicians recognize group therapy as the primary psychosocial intervention in the treatment of substance abusers, there is a growing need for a comprehensive resource that places the wide range of theories and ideas about the treatment into practical perspective. The Group Therapy of Substance Abuse is the first book to bridge the gap between substance abuse treatment and group psychotherapy by presenting expert analyses that address all major schools of thought. The book includes clinical examples and specific recommendations for treatment techniques, reflecting a variety of viewpoints from the leading clinicians, scholars, and teachers in the field.
Because of its therapeutic efficacy and cost effectiveness, group therapy has come to play an increasingly important role as the psychosocial therapy of choice for an ever-increasing numbers of patients with substance abuse disorders. For ease of use, The Group Therapy of Substance Abuse is divided into several sections, including a discussion of the basic theoretical approaches on which most group treatments of substance abusers are based; the uses of group treatment approaches in specific treatment settings; and the uses of group treatment with specific patient populations.
The Group Therapy of Substance Abuse also includes diverse perspectives on: interpersonal and psychodynamic approaches to therapy cognitive behavioral methods outpatient, inpatient, and partial-hospitalization groups network therapy and 12-step groups treatment of gay, lesbian, bisexual, adolescent, and elderly abusers therapeutic community groups Essential for professionals who treat substance abusers, The Group Therapy of Substance Abuse is also an excellent textbook for scholars and students in the mental health field. The book adds depth to the practicing (and soon-to-be practicing) clinician's understanding of how best to address the complex problem of addiction.

How to Lead a Successful Life - Life Lessons from Texas Holdem Poker (Paperback): David W. Brooks How to Lead a Successful Life - Life Lessons from Texas Holdem Poker (Paperback)
David W. Brooks
R377 Discovery Miles 3 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

There are many lessons in Texas Holdem poker that apply generally to life. The life lessons are universal, it's just fun to use situations in poker to make the point. Holdem players will get the analogies instantly, at least the good ones who know more than what beats what. I have written this book to share some lessons I learned across my life. I trust these principles will help you to deal with every-day life more effectively and will enable you to more fully enjoy every day you are granted. If the tone gets a little preachy sometimes, well, tough. You need to hear it. My sincere hope is that you will take time to physically write a few things down about your life after reading this book and then enjoy seeing that writing evolve across time. The analogies to Texas Holdem are fun. If you play Holdem you will get the connections easily. And if you don't, maybe you should try something new, and begin.
