Long-time activist, author and teacher of nonviolence, Father John Dear offers here the first ever commentary on the Synoptic Gospels from the perspective of active nonviolence, in the tradition of Gandhi and Dr. King. He walks through every line of the three synoptic Gospels pointing out Jesus’ practice and teachings of nonviolence each step of the way.
Dear’s Jesus is like Gandhi and Dr. King―nonviolent to the core, a disarming, healing presence toward those in need and a revolutionary disrupter of the unjust status quo and a political threat to the ruling authorities who succeed in killing him, only to push Jesus to the heights of nonviolence through his death and resurrection.
This original commentary brings a fresh new approach to the Gospels that will help all those who preach and engage in social ministries, and inspire everyone in this time of permanent warfare, gun violence, racism, poverty and climate change.

Scientific Practices in European History, 1200-1800 presents and
situates a collection of extracts from both widely known texts by
such figures as Copernicus, Newton, and Lavoisier, and lesser known
but significant items, all chosen to provide a perspective on
topics in social, cultural and intellectual history and to
illuminate the concerns of the early modern period. The selection
of extracts highlights the emerging technical preoccupations of
this period, while the accompanying introductions and annotations
make these occasionally complex works accessible to students and
non-specialists. The book follows a largely chronological sequence
and helps to locate scientific ideas and practices within broader
European history. The primary source materials in this collection
stand alone as texts in themselves, but in illustrating the
scientific components of early modern societies they also make this
book ideal for teachers and students of European history.
This book presents innovative strategies for sustainable, socially
responsible enterprise management from leading thinkers in the
fields of corporate citizenship, nonprofit management, social
entrepreneurship, impact investing, community-based economic
development and urban design. The book's integration of research
and practitioner perspectives with focused best practice examples
offers an in-depth, balanced analysis, providing new insights into
the social issues that are most relevant to organizational
stakeholders. This integrated focus on sustainable social
innovation differentiates the book from academic research
monographs on stakeholder theory and practitioner guides to
managing traditional Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
programs. Managing for Social Impact features 15 contributed
chapters written by thought leaders, industry analysts, and
managers of global and local organizations who are engaged with
innovative models of sustainable social impact. The editors also
provide a substantive introductory chapter describing a new
strategic framework for enhancing the Return on Social Innovation
(ROSI) through four pillars of social change: Open Circles, Focused
Purpose Sharing, Mutuality of Success, and a Persistent Change
Perspective.

behaviour in custodial settings. Expert contributors from nine
different countries offer a global perspective on what is a

Anthony Dear argues that just-in-time is essentially a philosophy
rather than a rigid methodology and that the important thing is to
grasp the fundamental ideas involved and then to see where, how and
to what extent they can be applied in the context of any particular
enterprise. The book is written in a refreshingly direct manner and
the discussion focuses on the kind of practical issues which are
likely to concern working managers. Illustrated with a wealth of
examples drawn from the author's own experience, Working Towards
Just-in-Time tackles its subject in a fashion which has direct and
immediate relevance to managers of small and medium-sized companies
and to middle management in larger firms. This book should be of
interest to managers of small and medium-sized companies; middle
management in larger firms.
- offers a better understanding of the reasons behind why the U.S.
and international community rely upon paramilitary actors - shows
why paramilitaries are essential for counterinsurgency operations,
center-periphery relations, and the state formation process - fills
a gap in the existing theories of militia behaviour, giving more
focus on the complicated interplay of actors at the sub-national
level
John William Dear was born in 1845 into a close-knit farming family
in Northern Virginia. After the Civil War, when he fought as a
Confederate soldier with Mosby's Rangers, he went West. For fifteen
years, until his premature death, Dear lived a tumultuous life in
the West as one of the last fur traders on the Upper Missouri and
as the longest serving, government-appointed Indian Trader to Red
Cloud's Sioux. But misfortune struck time and again: he was
stripped of his lucrative tradership by a corrupt Commissioner of
Indian Affairs and a former Governor of Nebraska and he lost his
trading business when the President changed the border between
Dakota Territory and Nebraska to prevent JW from trading with his
Indian clientele. His is an authentic Wild West story, true and
tragic. In the summer of 1871 JW met Red Cloud, the powerful leader
of the Oglala who at that time was probably the most respected
Indian chief in America. For the next twelve years the two men
lived alongside each other on the vast Northern Plains. This was
one of the most turbulent, violent, and controversial periods in
the history of the American West. The end of the Civil War saw tens
of thousands of emigrants brave the 2,000-mile journey across
Indian territory in search of a better life in California and
Oregon. It saw the coming of the trans-continental railroad across
Indian land; the wanton slaughter of millions of buffalo the
Indians depended upon for survival; the end of the fur trade; the
emergence of cattle barons and open range ranching; the discovery
of gold in the Black Hills of Dakota; the Great Sioux War of 1876;
Custer's last stand at the Battle of Little Bighorn; and the
forcing of the Lakota onto reservations. This book is about two men
caught up in these momentous events--Red Cloud, whose life has been
well researched, and JW Dear, whose story has never been told. It
is a story about the opening-up of the West and the process of
nation building, driven by great vision, sacrifice, and human
endeavor. But it is also a story of mismanagement, avarice,
corruption, bigotry, extreme violence, and injustice. It is a very
personal story of how Red Cloud and JW became caught up in these
life-changing events, which bound the two men together as they
fought for their survival. The book covers twenty-five tumultuous
years of American history that includes the Civil War, the
abolition of slavery, and the opening up of the West.

In the past few decades, sustainability of natural resources and
the social and environmental issues that surround them have become
increasingly topical. This multidisciplinary book discusses the
complex relationships between society, natural resources and the
environment. Major resources including water, agriculture, energy,
minerals and forests are considered, as well as different facets of
the environment including climate, landforms and biodiversity. Each
resource is discussed in the context of both environmental and
socio-economic factors affecting their present and future
distribution and demand. Presenting a balanced, comprehensive
overview of the issues surrounding natural resources and
sustainability, this accessible volume will be of interest to
policy makers, resource managers, graduate students and researchers
in the natural and social sciences.
