When Pastor Jonathan Larsen and his wife, Kim, find their faith and marriage tested by anonymous threats, stressful careers, and a laborious adoption process, they cry, pray and fight their way to a deeper level of trust and commitment. When he's elected bishop, a thirteen-year-old secret eats a hole in his soul. His passion for transparency contends with an equal desire not to hurt his family and admirers by admitting the long-ago deception. Struggling to apply forgiveness to himself in the same way he proclaims it to others, he is thwarted by his father's admonitions and the high expectations placed on church leaders. A seductive sister-in-law, a jealous colleague, and two clergy charged with sexual misconduct distract the bishop from his commitment to confess to Kim and church authorities. When the troubled bishop makes his decision, even he is surprised at the revelations that emerge. As you accompany these characters, you will travel to violence-ridden Liberia, rain soaked heights above Waimea Canyon on Kauai, and through the maze of freeways in Southern California. Together with them, religious or not, you will experience the challenge of living with integrity, compassion, and joy in a diverse and demanding twenty-first century culture.

R3,100 Discovery Miles 31 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Peptide nucleic acids (PNAs) have now existed for slightly more than ten years, with the interest in and applications of this pseudopeptide DNA mimic steadily increasing during the entire period. PNAs have rapidly attracted the attention of scientists from a diversity of fields ranging from (bio)organic and biophysical chemistry to prebiotic evolution, and from molecular biology to genetic diagnostics and drug development. Many of the applications take advantage of the unique properties of PNA-an uncharged pseudopeptide-that distinguish this DNA mimic from more traditional DNA analogs. Rather than trying to create a comprehensive collection of all published methods and protocols involving PNA-many of which have not yet been validated- I have decided to concentrate on select protocols that are either very well established by several groups around the world, such as PCR-clamping and in situ hybridization, or on new methods that may have broader future impact. Basic methods for PNA oligomer synthesis and analyses have also been included. I am very grateful to those friends and colleagues who have enthusiastically contributed their work, discussions, and writing, and thereby made this book possible. Peter E. This text, now in its second edition, offers an up-to-date, expanded treatment of the behaviour of polymers with regard to material variables and test and use conditions. It highlights general principles, useful empirical rules and practical equations.;Detailing the specific behaviour of many common polymers, the text: places emphasis on time and frequency dependence over temperature dependence; uses contemporary molecular mechanisms to explain creep, stress relaxation, constant strain rate responses and crazing; provides explicit equations to predict responses; supplies a discussion of large deformation multiaxial responses; compares statistical and continuum theories on the same data set; and updates stress-strain behaviour and particulate filled systems.

"[My life] is so rich with blessings-an immense capacity of enjoyment, books, and beloved friends. . . . Most earnestly I pray the dear Heavenly Father that I may sometime make myself far more worthy of the love shown to me than I am now." -April 22, 1900 letter from Helen Keller to John Hitz, AFB When Helen Keller died in 1968, at the age of eighty-eight years old, she was one of the most widely known women in the world. The overnight success of her biography, The Story of My Life, written at age twenty-three, made it obvious to Keller that she was endowed with a gift for writing and speaking. As she got older, she increasingly began to do both on a variety of subjects extending beyond her own disability, including social, political, and theological issues. Helen Keller: Selected Writings collects Keller's personal letters, political writings, speeches, and excerpts of her published materials from 1887 to 1968. The book also includes an introductory essay by Kim E. Nielsen, headnotes to each document, and a selected bibliography of work by and about Keller. The majority of the letters and some prints, all drawn from the Helen Keller Archives at the American Foundation for the Blind in New York, are being published for the first time. Literature, education, advocacy, politics, religion, travel: the many interests of Helen Keller culminate in this book and are reflected in her spirited narration. Also portrayed are the individuals Keller inspired and took inspiration from, including her teacher Annie Sullivan, her family, and others with whom she formed friendships throughout the course of her life. This often charming collection revels in and preserves Keller's public and private life, coming to us in the year which marks the 125th anniversary of her birthday.

Photochemical Probes in Biochemistry (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1989): Peter E. Nielsen Photochemical Probes in Biochemistry (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1989)
Peter E. Nielsen
R1,548 Discovery Miles 15 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The concept of using photochemical probes in the study of biological systems was developed by Westheimer who published the first photoaffinity labeling experiments more than twenty years ago (J.Bio1. Chem. 237, (1962) 3006). Since then the concept has been used successfully in various areas of biochemistry and recently several new interesting and exciting aspects of the concept have been developed. It is the general opinion by scientists in the "field" that the full potential of photochemical probes in biochemical studies has far from been exploited yet. This is mostly due to the interdisciplinary character of the concept involving photochemistry, synthetic chemistry as well as biochemistry/molecular biology. The perspective of the NATO advanced workshop on "Photochemical Probes in Biochemistry," held in Holte (Copenhagen) Denmark 14-19, August, 1988, was several fold. The workshop was to give an account of the "state of the art" of using photochemical probes in biochemistry as well as to bring together specialists in photochemistry, syn thetic chemistry and molecular biology in order to analyze advantages as well as the inherent problems and pitfalls of the concept and provide suggestions and guidelines for fu ture research. Furthermore, it is the hope of the editor that the present publication which gives an account of the lectures presented at the workshop, will provide an introduction to scientists who are not familiar with photochemical probes, but to whom these could help answer central and pertinent questions."

Anna Ott died in the Wisconsin State Hospital for the Insane in 1893. She had enjoyed status and financial success first as a physician's wife and then as the only female doctor in Madison. Throughout her first marriage, attempts to divorce her abusive second husband, and twenty years of institutionalization, Ott determinedly shaped her own life. Kim E. Nielsen explores a life at once irregular and unexceptional. Historical and institutional structures, like her whiteness and laws that liberalized divorce and women's ability to control their property, opened up uncommon possibilities for Ott. Other structures, from domestic violence in the home to rampant sexism and ableism outside of it, remained a part of even affluent women's lives. Money, Marriage, and Madness tells a forgotten story of how the legal and medical cultures of the time shaped one woman-and what her life tells us about power and society in nineteenth century America.

The Radical Lives of Helen Keller (Paperback): Kim E. Nielsen The Radical Lives of Helen Keller (Paperback)
Kim E. Nielsen
R803 Discovery Miles 8 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A political biography that reveals new sides to Helen Keller Several decades after her death in 1968, Helen Keller remains one of the most widely recognized women of the twentieth century. But the fascinating story of her vivid political life-particularly her interest in radicalism and anti-capitalist activism-has been largely overwhelmed by the sentimentalized story of her as a young deaf-blind girl. Keller had many lives indeed. Best known for her advocacy on behalf of the blind, she was also a member of the socialist party, an advocate of women's suffrage, a defender of the radical International Workers of the World, and a supporter of birth control-and she served as one of the nation's most effective but unofficial international ambassadors. In spite of all her political work, though, Keller rarely explored the political dimensions of disability, adopting beliefs that were often seen as conservative, patronizing, and occasionally repugnant. Under the wing of Alexander Graham Bell, a controversial figure in the deaf community who promoted lip-reading over sign language, Keller became a proponent of oralism, thereby alienating herself from others in the deaf community who believed that a rich deaf culture was possible through sign language. But only by distancing herself from the deaf community was she able to maintain a public image as a one-of-a-kind miracle. Using analytic tools and new sources, Kim E. Nielsen's political biography of Helen Keller has many lives, teasing out the motivations for and implications of her political and personal revolutions to reveal a more complex and intriguing woman than the Helen Keller we thought we knew.

Warfare in Cultural Context - Practice, Agency, and the Archaeology of Violence (Paperback): Axel E. Nielsen, Wiliam H Walker Warfare in Cultural Context - Practice, Agency, and the Archaeology of Violence (Paperback)
Axel E. Nielsen, Wiliam H Walker
R1,152 Discovery Miles 11 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Warfare is a constant in human history. According to the contributors to this volume, archaeologists have assumed that--within certain socioenvironmental parameters--war is always essentially the same phenomenon and follows a common logic, breaking out under similar conditions and having analogous effects on the people involved. In pursuit of this idea, archaeologists have built models to account for the occurrence of war in various times and places. The models are then tested against prehistoric evidence to make the causes and conduct of war predictable and data-based.
However, contributors argue, this model-and-evidence approach has given rise to multiple competing hypotheses and ambiguity rather than to full, coherent explanations of what turns out to be surprisingly complex acts of war. The chapters in Warfare in Cultural Context contend that agency and culture, inherited values and dispositions (such as religion and other cultural practices), beliefs, and institutions are always woven into the conduct of war.
This revealing book focuses on the ways that specific people construed their interests and life projects, and their problems and possibilities, and consequently chose among alternative courses of action. Using archaeological and ethnohistorical data from various parts of the world, the contributors explore the multiple avenues for the cultural study of warfare that these ideas make possible. Contributions focus on cultural aspects of warfare in Mesoamerica, South America, North America, and Southeast Asia. Case studies include warfare among the Maya, Inca, southwestern Pueblos, Mississippian cultures, and the Enga of Papua New Guinea.

Appalachia is full of ghosts. I ought to know; I am one of them. My story was already written before I ever drew breath one cold Kentucky morning in the Emerita Coal Mining Camp on the eve of the Great Depression. How come I was in my grave by my 10th birthday takes some telling.

The hills and hollers of Appalachia can swallow a man, let alone a girl like Bud Grace. Born the daughter of coal miner and funeralizing preacher Mournful Grace, her life is her father's story. The Bloody Harlan County Coal Wars are just getting cranked up. Appalachia's natural world is under assault by industrialists who are after its minerals at any cost.

Mournful, the seventh son of a seventh son cursed with second sight, can see trouble coming and struggles to change the future, all the while knowing he has no power over it. Everything that's coming is already in the past. In a desperate battle to save his beloved Evangeline and their daughter Bud, he must wage his own war against enemies bent on his personal destruction.

Bud lays bare the mysterious beauty and intricate customs of a forgotten land, as she unravels Mournful's tragic tale-one of haunting poverty and unimaginable violence as two worlds collide.

This book is on the effects of directed energy weapons. That is, how they propagate to and interact with targets. Propagation and target interaction are the key elements in an analysis of a weapon's utility to accomplish a given mission. For example, the effectiveness of a nuclear missile is determined by the yield of its warhead and the accuracy of its guidance, and the effectiveness of a rifle is determined by the type of round fired, the range to the target, and the skill of the soldier who fires it. Directed energy weapons are no different. But while there are books and manuals that deal with the issues affecting the utility of nuclear missiles and rifles, there is no comparable source of information for directed energy weapons. I have tried to fill that void with this book.

This is a character study of a youngster who immigrated to the US shortly before its involvement in WWI and the progeny of that family. His enlistment in the army resulted in a debilitating injury while serving overseas and was a factor inhis later involvement in gambling as a means of earning a living. His reputation as a "straight arrow" while involved with some gamblers in the Chicago area provided the impetus for his developing a casino in Las Vegas. As the story unfolds it becomes obvious that there are some historical truths in evidence even though the characters are all fictional. As this primary character lives out his life his progeny take over the role as the main character. The historical development of Las Vegas as a gaming center is reviewed when each of the characters come into the picture.

"Nielsen has compiled an outstanding collection, including many letters and photos that are being published for the first time. And even if you didn't grow up in Alabama, you may still marvel about how a little girl from Tuscumbia not only beat the odds but also blazed trails."
--"Dallas Morning News"

"Stunning final chapter."
--"The Yale Review"

"If you have not read Kim Nielsen's "The Radical Lifes of Helen Keller," then I highly recommend it. As a person who has labored through numerous thick volumes on the life of this remarkable deaf-blind woman, I am delighted with Nielsen's concise and refreshing scholarly work. She examines Keller's life from a Disability Studies perspective. The book is enjoyable and easy to read, and it captures Keller's political dimension with great detail, based on such additional-and sometimes chilling-sources as military intelligence and FBI files. Nielsen does great justice to both the subject of her book and to Disability Studies as an emerging field."
--"Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education"

"This is an important book."
-- "Altar Magazine"

"Nielsen's study challenges our impoverished cultural memories of Keller, which may have for too long served to "flatten" both our understanding not just of Keller's complex, contradictory life, but also the politics of disability, U.S. racialism, and women's political activities."
--"On Campus with Women"

""The Radical Lives of Helen Keller" thus is an important, essential guide for any who would receive a well-rounded survey of her life."
--"The Midwest Book Review"

""Radical Lives" fills out an important dimension ofour cultural memory of the adult Helen Keller."

"Nielsen's account is thoroughly researched, well organized and extremely well written....a truly important and exciting work."
--"Ragged Edge Online"

"Nielson examines Helen Keller's radical politics and the various reasons her politcal views were so often neglected."
--"Library Journal"

"Based on expansive research in wide-ranging materials, including military intelligence and FBI files, Kim Nielsen unveils Helen Keller's political life. This finely written biography helps us understand the movement for disability rights in our own time."
--Linda K. Kerber, author of "No Constitutional Right to Be Ladies: Women and the Obligations of Citizenship"

"The book's compactness, straightforward writing style, and revolutionary approach make "The Radical Lives of Helen Keller"invaluable for both teachers and scholars. Keller would be delighted that Nielsen allowed her her Scotch." --"Journal of American History"

"Nielsen's book gives us a Helen Keller for our times. We meet a complex person whose politics defy our reductionist knowledge about her, whose lived experience makes for compelling reading. "The Radical Lives of Helen Keller" renders three-dimensional, perhaps for the first time, a figure who all too often is known to the world, but known in minimalist flatness merely as a symbol of overcoming disability. Nielsen shows us that there is so much more to Keller--a political activist, theorist, and intellectual with unconventional, and, yes, even uncomfortable, opinions. She forthrightly explores these contradictions, in lucid, readable prose, to allow a very real version of Helen Keller toemerge from the darkness."
--Lennard J. Davis, author of "Bending Over Backwards: Essays on Disability and the Body"

Several decades after her death in 1968, Helen Keller remains one of the most widely recognized women of the twentieth century. But the fascinating story of her vivid political life--particularly her interest in radicalism and anti-capitalist activism--has been largely overwhelmed by the sentimentalized story of her as a young deaf-blind girl.
