Peptide nucleic acids (PNAs) have now existed for slightly more than ten years, with the interest in and applications of this pseudopeptide DNA mimic steadily increasing during the entire period. PNAs have rapidly attracted the attention of scientists from a diversity of fields ranging from (bio)organic and biophysical chemistry to prebiotic evolution, and from molecular biology to genetic diagnostics and drug development. Many of the applications take advantage of the unique properties of PNA-an uncharged pseudopeptide-that distinguish this DNA mimic from more traditional DNA analogs. Rather than trying to create a comprehensive collection of all published methods and protocols involving PNA-many of which have not yet been validated- I have decided to concentrate on select protocols that are either very well established by several groups around the world, such as PCR-clamping and in situ hybridization, or on new methods that may have broader future impact. Basic methods for PNA oligomer synthesis and analyses have also been included. The concept of using photochemical probes in the study of biological systems was developed by Westheimer who published the first photoaffinity labeling experiments more than twenty years ago (J.Bio1. Chem. 237, (1962) 3006). Since then the concept has been used successfully in various areas of biochemistry and recently several new interesting and exciting aspects of the concept have been developed. It is the general opinion by scientists in the "field" that the full potential of photochemical probes in biochemical studies has far from been exploited yet. This is mostly due to the interdisciplinary character of the concept involving photochemistry, synthetic chemistry as well as biochemistry/molecular biology. The perspective of the NATO advanced workshop on "Photochemical Probes in Biochemistry," held in Holte (Copenhagen) Denmark 14-19, August, 1988, was several fold. The workshop was to give an account of the "state of the art" of using photochemical probes in biochemistry as well as to bring together specialists in photochemistry, syn thetic chemistry and molecular biology in order to analyze advantages as well as the inherent problems and pitfalls of the concept and provide suggestions and guidelines for fu ture research. Furthermore, it is the hope of the editor that the present publication which gives an account of the lectures presented at the workshop, will provide an introduction to scientists who are not familiar with photochemical probes, but to whom these could help answer central and pertinent questions."

But only by distancing herself from the deaf community was she able to maintain a public image as a one-of-a-kind miracle. Using analytic tools and new sources, Kim E. Nielsen's political biography of Helen Keller has many lives, teasing out the motivations for and implications of her political and personal revolutions to reveal a more complex and intriguing woman than the Helen Keller we thought we knew.

Warfare is a constant in human history. According to the contributors to this volume, archaeologists have assumed that--within certain socioenvironmental parameters--war is always essentially the same phenomenon and follows a common logic, breaking out under similar conditions and having analogous effects on the people involved. In pursuit of this idea, archaeologists have built models to account for the occurrence of war in various times and places. The models are then tested against prehistoric evidence to make the causes and conduct of war predictable and data-based.
However, contributors argue, this model-and-evidence approach has given rise to multiple competing hypotheses and ambiguity rather than to full, coherent explanations of what turns out to be surprisingly complex acts of war. The chapters in Warfare in Cultural Context contend that agency and culture, inherited values and dispositions (such as religion and other cultural practices), beliefs, and institutions are always woven into the conduct of war.
This revealing book focuses on the ways that specific people construed their interests and life projects, and their problems and possibilities, and consequently chose among alternative courses of action. Using archaeological and ethnohistorical data from various parts of the world, the contributors explore the multiple avenues for the cultural study of warfare that these ideas make possible. This book is on the effects of directed energy weapons. That is, how they propagate to and interact with targets. Propagation and target interaction are the key elements in an analysis of a weapon's utility to accomplish a given mission. For example, the effectiveness of a nuclear missile is determined by the yield of its warhead and the accuracy of its guidance, and the effectiveness of a rifle is determined by the type of round fired, the range to the target, and the skill of the soldier who fires it. This is a character study of a youngster who immigrated to the US shortly before its involvement in WWI and the progeny of that family. His enlistment in the army resulted in a debilitating injury while serving overseas and was a factor inhis later involvement in gambling as a means of earning a living. His reputation as a "straight arrow" while involved with some gamblers in the Chicago area provided the impetus for his developing a casino in Las Vegas. As the story unfolds it becomes obvious that there are some historical truths in evidence even though the characters are all fictional. As this primary character lives out his life his progeny take over the role as the main character. The historical development of Las Vegas as a gaming center is reviewed when each of the characters come into the picture.
