The emergence of social media in the early 21st century promised to
facilitate new "DIY" cultural approaches, emphasizing participation
and democratization. However, in recent years these platforms have
been criticized as domineering and exploitative. For DIY musicians
in scenes with lengthy histories of cultural resistance, is social
media a powerful emancipatory and democratizing tool, or a new
corporate antagonist to be resisted? DIY Music explores the
significant challenges faced by artists navigating this fraught
cultural landscape. How do anti-commercial musicians operate in the
competitive, attention-seeking world of social media? How do they
deal with a new abundance of data and metrics? How do they present
their activity as "cultural resistance"? This book shows that a
platform-enabled DIY approach is now the norm for a wide array of
cultural practitioners; this "DIY-as-default" landscape threatens
to depoliticize the call to "do-it-yourself."

Following on from his exploration of the role of water transport in
the west of Britain, James Ellis Jones here broadens his scope to
provide a synthesis of archaeological work on the maritime and
riverine landscape and its full range of roles across the province
of Britannia. After surveying the coastal landscape and the boats
and ships in use during the Roman period, Jones first explores the
military role of the sea, in supplying the army and for naval and
amphibious operations. He then analyses the importance of sea and
riverine transport for trade, both internal and in terms of imports
and exports. A gazetteer of prominent coastal sites completes the
volume.

This is a study of the maritime dimension of transport, to and from
the military installations and civilian settlements of the coasts
and rivers of the west of Britain, where water was used as the
means of conveyance of military and commercial traffic during the
Romano-British period. The study gathers together the various
strands of evidence and, through systematic analysis, argues that
the seas and rivers were a major factor in the Roman supply system
and that, whilst the Roman system of roads has received much
attention, insufficient consideration has been paid to the role of
water transport.
Beer Places is, most essentially, a road map for craft beer, taking
readers to various locales to discover the beverage’s deep
connections to place. At another level, Beer Places is an academic
analysis of these geographical ties. Collected into sections that
address authenticity and revitalization, politics and economics,
and collectivity and collaboration, this book blends new research
with a series of “postcards”: informal conversations and
first-person dispatches from the field that transport readers to
the spots where pints are shared, networks forged, and spaces
defined. With insight from social scientists, beer bloggers, travel
writers, and food entrepreneurs who recount their experiences of
taprooms, breweries, and bottle shops from North Carolina to
Zimbabwe, Beer Places reveals differences in the craft beer scene
across multiple geographies. Situating craft beer as an emerging
and important component of food studies, the essays in this volume
attest to the singular power of craft beer to connect people and
places.
