Looking at discretion broadly as the exercise of controlled
freedom, this edited volume introduces insights from a range of
social sciences perspectives. Traditionally, discussions of
discretion have drawn on legal notions of the appropriate exercise
of legitimate authority specified by legislators. However,
empirical and theoretical studies in the social sciences have
extended our understanding of discretion, moving us beyond a narrow
legal view. Contributors from a range of disciplines explore the
idea of discretion and related notions of freedom and control
across social and political practices and in different contexts. As
this complex and important topic is discussed and examined, both
total control and unconstrained freedom appear to be illusions.
The MD Anderson Solid Tumor Oncology series presents the most cutting-edge surgical treatment and medical therapy for specific sites. Each year, more than 26,000 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, also called a "silent" disease because it does not usually exhibit early symptoms. This volume defines the current standard on multimodality care: surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, gene therapy, radiotherapy, and a review of the latest research and clinical trials. It includes sections on: epidemiology/molecular biology, inherited pancreatic cancer syndromes, staging, various surgical techniques and outcomes, multimodality therapy and emerging and future therapies. The individual chapters focus on specific topics to produce a reference work of value to those interested in pancreatic cancer from a clinical and translational research perspective. A must-have for surgical oncologists and general surgeons.
Applied Photochemistry encompasses the major applications of the
chemical effects resulting from light absorption by atoms and
molecules in chemistry, physics, medicine and engineering, and
contains contributions from specialists in these key areas.
Particular emphasis is placed both on how photochemistry
contributes to these disciplines and on what the current
developments are. The book starts with a general description of the
interaction between light and matter, which provides the general
background to photochemistry for non-specialists. The following
chapters develop the general synthetic and mechanistic aspects of
photochemistry as applied to both organic and inorganic materials,
together with types of materials which are useful as light
absorbers, emitters, sensitisers, etc. for a wide variety of
applications. A detailed discussion is presented on the
photochemical processes occurring in the Earth's atmosphere,
including discussion of important current aspects such as ozone
depletion. Two important distinct, but interconnected, applications
of photochemistry are in photocatalytic treatment of wastes and in
solar energy conversion. Semiconductor photochemistry plays an
important role in these and is discussed with reference to both of
these areas. Free radicals and reactive oxygen species are of major
importance in many chemical, biological and medical applications of
photochemistry, and are discussed in depth. The following chapters
discuss the relevance of using light in medicine, both with various
types of phototherapy and in medical diagnostics. The development
of optical sensors and probes is closely related to diagnostics,
but is also relevant to many other applications, and is discussed
separately. Important aspects of applied photochemistry in
electronics and imaging, through processes such as
photolithography, are discussed and it is shown how this is
allowing the increasing miniaturisation of semiconductor devices
for a wide variety of electronics applications and the development
of nanometer scale devices. The final two chapters provide the
basic ideas necessary to set up a photochemical laboratory and to
characterise excited states. This book is aimed at those in
science, engineering and medicine who are interested in applying
photochemistry in a broad spectrum of areas. Each chapter has the
basic theories and methods for its particular applications and
directs the reader to the current, important literature in the
field, making Applied Photochemistry suitable for both the novice
and the experienced photochemist.
The practice of social and ethical accounting is emerging as a key
tool for companies in the 1990s in response to calls for greater
transparency and accountability to different stakeholders, and as a
means for managing companies in increasingly complex situations
where social and environmental issues are significant in securing
business success. This is the first book to address the practice of
social and ethical accounting, auditing and reporting, and its
implications for the development of corporate social, ethical and
environmental responsibility. It includes ten case studies, as well
as an historical overview of the development of social and ethical
accounting and reporting. The editors introduce a methodological
framework that allows emerging practice worldwide to be analysed,
understood and improved; and the case studies are written by the
practitioners, giving insight into the experiences described. This
innovative book, written by internationally acknowledged leaders in
the field, will be of enormous value to business managers,
particularly those with responsibility for corporate affairs, human
resources, environmental management, financial management, or
planning. It will also be a useful text for business students.
Consulting for Real People: a client centred approach for leaders
and change agents 2/e shows you how to become truly client-centred
by empowering your client and supporting them right through to the
point where the new behaviour replaces the old. Formerly titled
'||'''Client-Centred Consulting: A practical guide for internal
advisers and trainers'||''' this highly successful book has been
fully updated to reflect advances in the field. The scope of the
book has also been expanded to include issues, dilemmas and the
operational styles of both internal and external change agents.
Other new topics covered include change management issues for
leaders, managing large-scale organisational changes, and ways in
which change agents can empower themselves and their clients. The
book begins with an exploration of all aspects of change management
from the perspective of consultant, manager or team leader. It goes
on to explore the range of consulting styles available and the
structure of the consultant-client relationship. Finally it
explains why successful change agents must have a high level of
personal power and self-esteem and it explores ways in which these
can be acquired.

Bryan Singer directs this blockbuster superhero sequel based on the
characters from the Marvel comic strip. With a storyline that
alternates between the past and present, the film acts as a direct
sequel to three separate films, 'X-Men: The Last Stand' (2006),
'X-Men: First Class' (2011) and 'The Wolverine' (2013). When the
survivors of the battle in 'X-Men: The Last Stand', led by Magneto
(Ian McKellen), Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and Storm (Halle
Berry), discover that total annihilation now awaits humans and
mutants alike, they send the ageless Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) back
in time to try and change the course of events. In the past,
Wolverine must team up with the younger incarnations of the X-Men
seen in 'X-Men: First Class', Charles Xavier (James McAvoy),
Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), to
avert disaster. Will he succeed?

This book addresses issues concerning the engineering of system
prod ucts that make use of computing technology. These systems may
be prod ucts in their own right, for example a computer, or they
may be the computerised control systems inside larger products,
such as factory automation systems, transportation systems and
vehicles, and personal appliances such as portable telephones. In
using the term engineering the authors have in mind a development
process that operates in an integrated sequence of steps, employing
defined techniques that have some scientific basis. Furthermore we
expect the operation of the stages to be subject to controls and
standards that result in a product fit for its intended purpose,
both in the hands of its users and as a business venture. Thus the
process must take account of a wide range of requirements relating
to function, cost, size, reliabili ty and so on. It is more
difficult to define the meaning of computing technology. These days
this involves much more than computers and software. For example,
many tasks that might be performed by software running in a general
purpose computer can also be performed directly by the basic
technology used to construct a computer, namely digital hardware.
However, hardware need not always be digital; we live in an
analogue world, hence analogue signals appear on the boundaries of
our systems and it can sometimes be advantageous to allow them to
penetrate further."
The role of a genetic counsellor is to mediate between the rapid
advances in molecular medicine and an individual??'s ability to
understand and manage the risks of their inheritance. Counsellors
therefore need to be fully in command of the psychological impact
of their communications. Written by a psychiatrist who later became
a psychotherapist, this manual is essential reading for counsellors
of all disciplines. It examines the psychological processes and
explains why people approach and respond differently. Effective
genetic counselling requires a knowledge of attachment behaviour
and non-directiveness, and an in-depth understanding of empathy in
order to help individuals contain anxiety and process grief and so
facilitate their decision-making or help with the effects of
reviewing a test result. Along with an up-to-date discussion of
similar approaches in family therapy and psychoanalysis, the effect
of counselling on the counsellor is also examined creatively in
order to enrich the interview with clients.

Identity provides an essential resource of key statements drawn from cultural studies, sociology, and psychoanalytic theory, and includes three editorial essays, which place the readings in their theoretical and historical context. Divided into three parts: Language, Ideology and Discourse; Psychoanalysis and Psycho-Social Relations; and Identity, Sociology and History, this book invites readers to compare and contrast cultural studies approaches with psychoanalytic and historical and sociological accounts of identity formation. The Identity Reader will be an essential sourcebook for students of cultural studies, gender studies, social psychology, and sociology. The key statements are from the work of: Louis Althusser, Jessica Benjamin, Emile Benveniste, Homi K Bhabha, Pierre Bourdieu, Judith Butler, Ian Craib, Jacques Dérrida, Norbert Elias, Frantz Fanon, Michel Foucault, Anthony Giddens, Stuart Hall, Pierre Hadot, Melanie Klein, Jacques Lacan, Christopher Lasch, Isabel Menzies, Lyth, T H Marshall, Marcel Mauss, Amèlie Okensberg Rorty, Jacqueline Rose, Nikolas Rose, Michael Rustin, Kaja Silverman, Max Weber, D W Winnicott
The New Testament is of prime importance for understanding early
Jewish and Christian messianism and eschatology. Yet often the New
Testament presumes a background and context of belief without fully
articulating it. Early Jewish and Christian messianism and
eschatology, after all, did not emerge in a vacuum; they developed
out of early Jewish hopes that had their roots in the Old
Testament. A knowledge of early Jewish literature, and especially
of the Dead Sea Scrolls from Qumran, is essential for understanding
the shape of these ideas at the turn of the era. In this book, the
inaugural volume in the Studies in the Dead Sea Scrolls and Related
Literature series, Craig Evans and Peter Flint have assembled eight
essays from outstanding scholars who address this issue from a
variety of angles. After an introduction by the editors, successive
essays deal with the Old Testament foundations of messianism; the
figure of Daniel at Qumran; the Teacher of Righteousness; the
expectation of the end in the Scrolls; and Jesus, Paul, and John
seen in light of Qumran.
The Declaration on the Elimination of All Forms of Intolerance and
of Discrimination Based on Religion or Belief, as proclaimed by the
United Nations General Assembly in 1981, is the only universal
human rights instrument specifically focusing on religious
intolerance and discrimination. However, recent years have seen
increasing controversy surrounding this right, in both political
and legal contexts. The European Court of Human Rights has
experienced a vast expansion in the number of cases it has had
brought before it concerning religious freedom, and politically the
boundaries of the right have been much disputed. This book provides
a systematic analysis of the different approaches to religious
rights which exist in public international law. The book explores
how particular institutional perspectives emerge in the context of
these differing approaches. It examines, and challenges, these
institutional perspectives. It identifies new directions for
approaching religious rights through international law by examining
existing legal tools, and assesses their achievements and
shortcomings. It studies religious organisations' support for
international human rights protection, as well as religious
critique of international human rights and the development of an
alternative religious 'Bills of Rights'. It investigates whether
expressions of members belonging to religious minorities can be
considered under the minority right to culture, rather than the
right to religion, and discusses the benefits and shortcomings of
such a route. It analyses the reach and limits of the provisions in
the 1981 Declaration, identifies ways in which the right is being
eroded as a concept, and suggests new ways in which the right can
be reinforced and protected.
