convenient, healthy, easy on the washing up and, as
Liz Franklin proves here in 101 inspired meat-free recipes,
big on flavour!
More and more of us are cutting out animal protein and
products from our diets, or at very least reducing them.
Liz Franklin reveals how all manner of truly scrumptious
dishes can be created when oven, sheet pan and
vegetables conspire. Most of the recipes are built on
a rainbow of roasted vegetables, grains, cheese and
vegan sources of protein, but there are also recipes for
things you might not associate with oven cooking too,
such as fabulous fritters, glorious soups and the best-
ever baked porridge.
Taking their lead from dishes enjoyed all around
the world, recipes include delicious dishes from the
Mediterranean, Middle East, Africa and the Americas
as well as ideas designed to showcase your own local
seasonal produce.

In this book, Christopher Evan Franklin develops and defends a
novel version of event-causal libertarianism. This view is a
combination of libertarianism-the view that humans sometimes act
freely and that those actions are the causal upshots of
nondeterministic processes-and agency reductionism-the view that
the causal role of the agent in exercises of free will is exhausted
by the causal role of mental states and events (e.g., desires and
beliefs) involving the agent. Franklin boldly counteracts a
dominant theory that has similar aims, put forth by well-known
philosopher Robert Kane. Many philosophers contend that
event-causal libertarians have no advantage over compatibilists
when it comes to securing a distinctively valuable kind of freedom
and responsibility. To Franklin, this position is mistaken.
Assuming agency reductionism is true, event-causal libertarians
need only adopt the most plausible compatibilist theory and add
indeterminism at the proper juncture in the genesis of human
action. The result is minimal event-causal libertarianism: a model
of free will with the metaphysical simplicity of compatibilism and
the intuitive power of libertarianism. And yet a worry remains:
toward the end of the book, Franklin reconsiders his assumption of
agency reductionism, arguing that this picture faces a hitherto
unsolved problem. This problem, however, has nothing to do with
indeterminism or determinism, or even libertarianism or
compatibilism, but with how to understand the nature of the self
and its role in the genesis of action. Crucially, if this problem
proves unsolvable, then not only is event-causal libertarianism
untenable, so also is event-causal compatibilism.
Hollywood film music is often mocked as a disreputably 'applied'
branch of the art of composition that lacks both the seriousness
and the quality of the classical or late-romantic concert and
operatic music from which it derives. Its composers in the 1930s
and '40s were themselves often scornful of it and aspired to
produce more 'serious' works that would enhance their artistic
reputation.
In fact the criticism of film music as slavishly descriptive or
manipulatively over-emotional has a history that is older than film
- it had even been directed at the relatively popular operatic and
concert music written by some of the emigre Hollywood composers
themselves before they had left Europe. There, as subsequently in
America, such criticism was promoted by the developing project of
Modernism, whose often high-minded opposition to mass culture used
polarizing language that drew, intentionally or not, upon that of
gender difference. Regressive, late-romantic music, the old
argument ran, was -- as women were believed to be -- emotional,
irrational, and lacking in logic.
This book seeks to level the critical playing field between film
music and "serious music," reflecting upon gender-related ideas
about music and modernism as much as about film. Peter Franklin
broaches the possibility of a history of twentieth-century music
that would include, rather than marginalize, film music -- and,
indeed, the scores of a number of the major Hollywood movies
discussed here, like The Bride of Frankenstein, King Kong, Rebecca,
Gone With The Wind, Citizen Kane and Psycho. In doing so, he brings
more detailed music-historical knowledge to bear upon cinema music,
often discussed as a unique and special product of film, and also
offers conclusions about the problematic aspects of musical
modernism and some arguably liberating aspects of
"late-romanticism."

The latest edition in the Principles of Corporate Finance dynasty,
the 14th edition continues in its tradition of showing how theory
applies to the very practical problems and decisions faced by
financial managers. Looking at what financial managers do and why,
the book aims to give readers a solid understanding of theory so
that they know what questions to ask when times change and new
problems need to be analyzed, eventually standing as a reference
and a guide to help them make financial decisions, not just study
them. This new edition welcomes Alex Edmans to the author team,
whose global authority and expertise in corporate governance,
responsible business and behavioural finance have been invaluable
in bolstering coverage of these topics. A new chapter is entirely
dedicated to the subject of balancing shareholder value with
promoting the interests of all stakeholders, the potential
conflicts inherent in this, and how a responsible business should
behave. There have been several changes to chapter structure as
well as expanded discussion of issues that have grown in importance
since the previous edition including behavioural finance, and
financial innovation driven by AI, big data and cloud computing. It
has also grown to take a more international focus, to bring in more
information and perspectives on major developing economies such as
China and India, and looking at how financing and governance
systems differ around the world. The new edition retains and builds
on the pedagogical features of previous editions, with new chapter
content summaries, new self-test questions interspersed at key
points, and a raft of 'Beyond the page' examples available online
through links in the text. Click here to view the sample chapter

In Death, Dying, and Organ Transplantation: Reconstructing Medical
Ethics at the End of Life, Miller and Truog challenge fundamental
doctrines of established medical ethics. They argue that the
routine practice of stopping life support technology in hospitals
causes the death of patients and that donors of vital organs
(hearts, lungs, liver, and both kidneys) are not really dead at the
time that their organs are removed for life-saving transplantation.
These practices are ethically legitimate but are not compatible
with traditional rules of medical ethics that doctors must not
intentionally cause the death of their patients and that vital
organs can be obtained for transplantation only from dead donors.
In this book Miller and Truog undertake an ethical examination that
aims to honestly face the reality of medical practices at the end
of life. They expose the misconception that stopping life support
merely allows patients to die from their medical conditions, and
they dispute the accuracy of determining death of hospitalized
patients on the basis of a diagnosis of "brain death" prior to
vital organ donation. After detailing the factual and conceptual
errors surrounding current practices of determining death for the
purpose of organ donation, the authors develop a novel ethical
account of procuring vital organs. In the context of reasonable
plans to withdraw life support, still-living patients are not
harmed or wronged by organ donation prior to their death, provided
that valid consent has been obtained for stopping treatment and for
organ donation.
Recognizing practical difficulties in facing the truth regarding
organ donation, the authors also develop a pragmatic alternative
account based on the concept of transparent legal fictions. In sum,
Miller and Truog argue that in order to preserve the legitimacy of
end-of-life practices, we need to reconstruct medical ethics.
