The current state of the art of several aspects of minerals and
petroleum is presented in this volume. It documents the proceedings
of the Internationl symposium on Particle Technology and Surface
Phenomena in Minerals and Petroleum sponsored by the Fine Particle
Society (FPS). This meeting was held in San Diego, California,
August 21-25, 1990. The symposium upon which this volume is based
was organized in five sessions emphasizing various basic and
applied aspects of research on minerals and petroleum technology.
Major topics discussed involve surface phenomena in minerals,
mineral flotation, characterization of aspaltenes, theoretical
aspects of reservoir simulation, porosity, permeability, residual
water saturation, hydrocarbon and gas potential in north slope
Alaska, polymer/alkaline flooding, surfactant flooding and foam
flooding for enhanced oil recovery. This edition includes eighteen
selected papers presented in the symposium. These papers are
divided in four broad categories: (1) Asphaltene Aggregation and
Characterization, (2) Theoretical Aspects and Reservoir
Characterization, (3) Colloidal Dispersions in Minerals/Petroleum,
and (4) Surface Phenomena and Petroleum Recovery. Several mineral
and oil recovery processes using various chemicals with special
reference to surface phenomena and particle technology are
described in these sections.

From a general point of view the importance of striving to minimize
envir- mental disturbances on the continental shelf cannot be
overemphasized. Coastal areas are sites of population centers,
navigation and recreation activities, and - source development, all
of which contribute to environmental stress on the shelf. Proper
management of the shelf for optimum use requires a thorough
understanding of shelf processes. Complex problems, such as the
influence of hydrodynamics on sediment dispersal, element
differentiation and migration, physiochemical changes at the
sediment water interface, the relationship - tween the pollutants
and sediments, and the type of substrate with regard to benthic
community and/or man-made structures require a multidisciplinary
approach to their solution. The present study interrelates
meteorologic, hyd- graphic, sedimentologic, and geochemical
parameters to derme specific envir- ments on the Alaskan Shelf.
These observations are then related to geologic principles in an
effort to elucidate the sedimentary processes and elemental
migration on the shelf. Attempts have also been made to relate the
sediment texture to the geochem- try of the sediments. Obviously
the chemistry is complicated as a result of b- genic contributions
and variable provenance; however, to some extent elemental
differentiation accompanies textural differentiation in sediments.
The distribution of elements in various phases of crustal (source)
rocks is gen- ally interpreted on the basis of crystallographic
concepts, especially the concept of isomorphism.
India is among the few countries with home made satellites in
orbit. Indian Space programme while being impressive with arrays of
achievements in peaceful use of the space has woefully lacked in
dedicated military applications. Admittedly cartographic platforms
in the orbit can be used by the military to meet their cartographic
needs but, they fall short of the 10-15cm (4"-6") capabilities of
the best military satellites today. In "Space Security from the
Indian Perspective", the author examines the dimension of the space
threat emanating from our adversaries and need to develop our own
military capability in the space .He argues that reliance of space
is not exclusive to defence alone in fact the dependence of civil
sector is more critical. In defence, we need not only to develop
affordable options but also take steps to safeguard our space
assets to ensure their continued use. This book examines the
ramification of the military space capability and the choices
available to India to safeguard its space assets which would
interest both the generalists and the specialists.
A number of books have been written on the 1946 Royal Indian Navy
Mutiny but the true story of this historic event remains untold
with few facts deliberately suppressed. The Inquiry Commission
report gave graphic details of mutinous acts at all the naval
stations but it awarded no punishment to the guilty. It glossed
over the bad conditions of service leading to the mutiny. It
recommended no action against naval administration although bad
service conditions were stated to be the root cause of mutiny in
the Navy. It was an irony of British Naval Justice that the men
voicing these bad service conditions were punished under the Naval
Discipline Act. This book attempts to bring out a concise version
of the composition and administration of the Navy including its
sudden expansion during the World War II. The author's long
association with naval counter intelligence has helped him to
discern some unknown facts of this mutiny which are reflected in
this book. It gives the build up and administrative background of
Royal Indian Navy and details of mutinous acts in all stations
because of which India did not have to fight any more for its
freedom. The book, therefore, appropriately bears the title of
'Untold Story-1946 Naval Mutiny, the last war of Independence.'

Today India and the U.S share a convergance of interests on many
fronts. This has been mainly due to the rapid pace of changes in
the Indo-Pacific region and the consequent shift in geo-political
and geo-economic centre of gravity. This book traces the Indo -US
defence relations from the past when their policies and other
differences in world view became a mjor barrier in developing close
military relationship to the present strategic partnership, this
volume also gives out the challenges and way ahead to overcome
them.
