Peffels erfolgreiche Gelegenheitsgedichte wurden von Freunden ohne sein Wissen seit 1759 in der Strassburger Wochenschrift Der Sammler gedruckt. Peffel selbst druckte erstmals 1761 eine dreibandige Sammlung: Poetische Versuche, Frankfurt a. M. Diese Sammlung erganzte u. veranderte Pfeffel spater mehrfach, indem er inzwischen erschienene Gedicht- u. Fabelbande berucksichtigte. Die hier vorliegende vierte, 1802-1810 bei Cotta in zehn Banden erschienene Auflage, ist die Ausgabe letzter Hand.
