Das vorliegende Werk behandelt denjenigen Teil der mathemati schen Geodasie, in welchem die Erdfigur als schwach abgeplattetes Drehellipsoid mit bekannten Dimensionen, kurz Spharoid genannt, an genommen wird. Im Gegensatz zur "Niederen Geodasie", wo Teile der Erdoberflache durch Ebene oder Kugel angenahert werden; spricht man hier von der "Hoeheren Geodasie". Ihre Gegenstande sind -in geometri scher Stufenfolge - die Lage beschreibung der Punkte auf dem Spharoid durch Koordinaten, die geodatische Linie, das geodatische Dreieck und daraus gebildete Ketten und Netze. Demgemass gliedert sich das Werk folgendermassen: Der erste Teil enthalt in einheitlich organischem Aufbau die kon forme Abbildung des Spharoids auf* Kugel und Ebene und damit die Gewinnung ebener, rechtwinkliger, konformer Punkt-Koordinaten (Ab schnitt I bis IX). Besonderes Gewicht wird dabei auf das Studium der Spharoidabbildungen im Grossen gelegt, da nur hierdurch vertiefte Ein blicke in die Struktur der Abbildungsfunktionen und ihre analytischen Darstellungsmittel gewonnen werden koennen. Die Formeln und Ent wicklungen werden in einer fur den praktischen Gebrauch notwendigen Vielseitigkeit und Vollstandigkeit gegeben und im Hinblick auf den Praktiker mit durchaus elementaren Methoden so weit gefuhrt, dass der Anschluss an numerische Rechnungen erreicht wird. Dem gleichen Zweck dienen zahlreiche Koeffiziententabellen, die ausserdem eine bequeme Abschatzung der vernachlassigten Reihenglieder erlauben.
