The research on mineral deposits and the exploration of new vast resources made exceptional progress worldwide during the last decades. At the same time, mining activity has shifted from the historical European centres to other continents. Even though the mineral pro- duction of the Alpine province has lost its significance as compared with other areas of the world in this century, striking ideas and theo- ries on the formation of mineral deposits originating from this domain have stimulated lively international discussion. This may be explained by the proximity of different peoples with varying geographical and intellectual backgrounds meeting in the Alpine region. Realizing this development some Italian colleagues, above all Remo Albertini and Guiliano Perna, initiated the (first) International Sym- posium on Mineral Deposits of the Alps in 1966. When I. ISMIDA won favorable attention, it was resolved to call further meetings at regular intervals. A different Alpine country was host and organizer each time. As a first summary of the historical development, we give a short record of previous meetings: I. ISMIDA Sept. 11-18,1966, held at Passo della Mendola/Italy II. ISMIDA Oct. 5-10,1981, held at Berchtesgaden/Bavaria, FRG The present volume contains the greater number of papers pre- sented at the Fourth International Symposium on Mineral Deposits of the Alps, held at Berchtesgaden (Bavaria), Federal Republic of Ger- many, in 1981.

Since the early days of medicine one concern of doctors has been the removal of kidney stones and prevention of recurrence. Owing to the hesitancy of progress in the prevention of initial stone formation and of relapse, however, removal of stones from the kidney and ureter were developed to highly refined techniques and they formerly accounted for a major proportion of the urological operations performed. In the last few years developments in the treatment of kidney stones have taken a completely different turn. In the majority of cases suit able methods are available to bring about spontaneous passage of the stones, while in a smaller proportion drug-induced litholysis is pos sible. Stones that cannot be passed are now treated mainly with extra corporeal shockwave lithotripsy, percutaneous litholapaxy or uretero renoscopy. These methods are often used in combination and comple ment each other. Nonetheless, despite the accumulating experience with the new methods there will still be situations in which stones can not be removed except by open surgery. "Our skill as surgeons and the management of the brilliantly designed equipment would amount to nothing more than highly skilled mechanical work if they did not go hand in hand with enhanced insight into the cause of lithiasis and thus into ways of preventing it - or at least of preventing the relapse that is the lot of most patients."

The problem of time-and strata-bound formation of ore deposits has during the past decade become one of the most debated topics in cur rent international discussion. Due to the amazing results of modern mineral exploration and world-wide geophysical research, the mutual relationship between the complex geological history pf a crustal seg ment and the development of distinct metallogenic provinces (ore belts) has received much interest. Reviewing the earth's history in this light one can now recognize metallogenic epochs even of global range which document the existence of world-wide time-bound ore enrich ments. The knowledge of these metallogenetic processes has been growing step by step for several decades. It began with simple observations and sceptic interpretations, which at first threw heretical spot lights on to the edifices of the prevailing theories on granitic differentiation as the favoured source of ore deposits. It was obvious that the new ideas at first referred to ore enrichments in sedimentary sequences, nowadays summarized under the term strata-bound, and mainly interpreted as stratiform or sedimentary ore deposits. Moreover, the modern term "strata-bound" also includes ore mineralizations which are bound to distinct units of layered (intrusive or extrusive) igneous complexes as a general descriptive term without genetical restriction Albert Maucher is one of the representatives of the initial era who discussed these genetical questions critically in the decade before the 2nd World War."

The handbook on lithiasis edited by Kurt Boshamer and originally brought out in 1961 was for more than two decades the standard work in this field for researchers and clinicians alike. However, our knowl edge of urolithiasis has been increased so enormously - by worldwide interdisciplinary research into the genesis of urinary calculi, by the new treatment possibilities opened up principally by advances in tech nology, and by the success achieved in prevention of recurrence - that it is almost impossible to take in all the relevant journal articles, books chapters, monographs, and proceedings. It was therefore our aim in this, the first of two independent vol umes, to provide a concise but comprehensive summary of current knowledge concerning the morphology and composition of calculi, epidemiology, pathogenesis, and diagnostic techniques. The most re cent developments are described, and nothing in the world literature is ignored. A second volume will cover medical therapy, operative, in strumental and noninvasive treatment, and prophylaxis. To have any chance of success, treatment and prophylaxis must be based on knowledge of calculus formation. Study of the composition of calculi has yielded important information regarding the conditions for formation, and this underlines once again the great value of analy sis of urinary concretions. Evaluation of epidemiological data has im portant consequences for the individual patient."

The third supplement volume of "Computing" deals with parallel processes and thus with a highly topical area of informatics. As both the first supplement volumes were concerned with numerical questions, the entire subject, the cultivation of which "Computing" purports, is now broadly outlined in the supplement volumes too. The reason for the simultaneous production of so many papers on the same subject was the 60th birthday of Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Handler, an eminent specialist in the field of parallel processing. It was the wish of his friends, colleagues and collaborators that Herr Handler be honoured by the gift of a volume which would have as its centre of interest the area of research that he represents. In this volume, parallelism is focused upon from various angles and an attempt has been made, through new results, to bring it a little further. It is obvious from a glance at the bibliographies of the papers contributed, in which many of Herr Handler's publications are referenced, that he was never far from the writer's minds.

Zur 7. Jahrestagung der Gesellschaft fUr Informatik hatte der Pro- grarnrnausschuB urn die Einreichung von Ubersichts- und Spezialvortra- gen aus allen Gebieten der Inforrnatik gebeten. Vortrage Uber Ent- wicklungs- und Benutzungserfahrungen bei Anwendungssystemen solI ten besondere Beachtung finden. (Darnit waren aber nicht Reklarnevortrage im Prospektstil gemeint.) Dem PrograrnrnausschuB wurden 54 Manuskripte vorgelegt, von denen ei- nige sich nur unwesentlich von bereits bei anderen Tagungen ver- 6ffentlichten unterschieden und somit ausgesondert werden muBten. Aufgrund der Beurteilung durch die Rezensenten und eigener LektUre hat der PrograrnrnausschuB schlieBlich 13 Vortrage ausgewahlt, die in diesem Tagungsband zusarnrnengefaBt sind. Das Ziel der Gesellschaft fUr Informatik, die Anwender in eben so starkem MaBe anzusprechen wie die Hochschulangeh6rigen, wurde dabei wiederum nur urn ein sehr kleines StUck vorangebracht. Die Ubersetzung praktisch relevanter Forschungsergebnisse in eine dem Anwender verstandliche Sprache, wird eine vordringliche Aufgabe zukUnftiger Jahrestagungen sein. Bei den Themen, die fUr die Hauptvortrage und fUr die Podiumsdis- kussion gewahlt wurden, ist ebenfalls versucht worden, aktuelle Themen zu finden, die sowohl fUr den Hochschulbereich als auch fUr die Anwender von Bedeutung sind und damit die LUcke zwischen bei- den UberbrUcken helfen. Leider ist es zum ersten Mal nicht gelungen, die Hauptvortrage der eingeladenen Referenten mit in den Tagungsband aufzunehrnen. Der Wunsch, den Tagungsband bei Beginn der Tagung zu verteilen, ergab eine zu knappe Zeitspanne fUr die Hauptvortragenden, ihre Manu- skripte fertigzustellen.

Der vorliegende Band enthalt die vortrage, die anlaBlich der 4. Fach- tagung Uber Programmiersprachen der Gesellschaft fUr Informatik gehal- ten wurden. Die drei vorangegangenen Fachtagungen Uber dieses Gebiet fanden in MUnchen (1971), SaarbrUcken (1972) und Kiel (1974) statt. Die Aufforderung zur Vortragsanmeldung enthielt die folgenden Fach- gebiete: Compiler und Interpreter Sprachen fUr Systemprogrammierung Dialogsprachen Programmiersprachen fUr besondere Anwendungen ProzeBrechnersprachen Erweiterbare Sprachen Nichtprozedurale Sprachen Programmiermethodik Semantik und Verifikation. Sie fand ein erstaunlich starkes Echo. Der ProgrammausschuB bestand aus den Mitgliedern des Fachausschusses 2 der GI: Prof. Dr. K. Alber (Braunschweig) W. Frielinghaus (Konstanz) Prof. Dr. H. Langmaack (Kiel) Prof. Dr. M. Paul (MUnchen) Prof. Dr. B. Schlender (Kiel) Prof. Dr. G. SeegmUller (Munchen). Er war bemuht, diejenigen Vortrage auszuwahlen, die am ehesten den gegenwartigen Stand der Forschung und Entwicklung wiedergeben. Die bereits im Tagungsband einer fruheren GI-Jahrestagung beklagten Ver- standigungsschwierigkeiten zwischen Forschern und Anwendern sin- wie das Verfahren der Vortragsauswahl zeigte - noch lange nicht uber- wunden. 1m Vergleich zu den frtiheren Tagungsbanden stieg jedoch die Anzahl der Vortrage, die den Anwendungen zuzurechnen sind. Dennoch bleibt fur weitere Fachtagungen in dieser Richtung noch viel zu tun. Den Vortragenden sei an dieser Stelle fur ihre Beitrage gedankt. Der Erfolg einer Tagung hangt in erster Linie von ihnen abo Daneben gilt unser Dank den Sitzungsleitern und den Mitgliedern des Programmkomi- tees, sowie den Mitarbeitern des Lehrstuhls fur Informatik II (Pro- IV gramrnier- und Dialogsprachen, sowie ihre Compiler) der Friedrich-Ale- xander-Universitat Erlangen-Nlirnberg, die alle bei der Organisation der Tagung geholfen :1aben.

Die Hydrogeologie der nichtverkarstungsfahigen, d. h. vor all em der nichtkarbonatischen oder gering karbonatischen Festgesteine hat bisher nicht geniigend Beachtung gefunden. Sie hat noch keine zusammenfassende Dar- stellung ihrer besonderen Probleme und deren Bedeutung in cler Grundwasser- erkundung und -gewinnung, in Grundwasserhaushaltsfragen, in vie1en inter- disziplinaren Wissenschaftsgebieten - z. B. in der Umweltforschung - sowie in unterschiedlichen, besonders bautechnischen Anwendungsbereichen erfahren. Vielfaltig sind dagegen die Bemiihungen der Geologen und Hydrologen bisher gewesen, die Wasserfiihrung der Lockergesteine zu erkunden, in der Literatur zu beschreiben oder in Vortragen bei speziellen Symposien oder Tagungen darzustellen. Auch verkarstungsfahige Festgesteine sind in den letzten Jahren zunehmend Gegenstand von Forschungen und Vortragsveranstaltungen sowie zusammenfassender Darstellungen gewesen. Der Hydrogeologie nichtkarbonatischer Festgesteine wird erst in den letzten Jahren mehr Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt. Ihr sind speziell auch einige internationale wissenschaftliche Tagungen gewidmet worden, so: 1965 ein Symposium (organisiert von UNESCO, zusammen mit AIHS, FAO und AIH 1) in Dubrovnik (Jugoslawien) unter dem Thema: "Hydrologie des roches fissurees", 1972 ein Symposium (der IAEG 2) in Stuttgart unter dem Thema: "Percolation through fissured rocks", 1974 ein Symposium (von Servo geo!. Esp. und UNESCO) in Lanzarote (Kanarische Inseln) iiber: "Hidrologia de terrenos volcanicos".
