In the last few years we have witnessed the widespread proliferation of video camcorders as a powerful and sophisticated instrument for data collection. Video is increasingly used in broad areas of research throughout the social sciences. It allows for a rich recording of social processes and provides a completely new kind of data. Used as a "microscope of interaction", this "video revolution" is expected to exert profound impact on research practice. But despite its popularity as an instrument, the methodological discussion of video is still underdeveloped. This book gathers a selection of outstanding European researchers in the field of qualitative interpretive video analysis. Migration involves change of geographical place, social relations and cultural habits. This volume brings together contributions from an international group of scholars including studies of ritual change and social transformation in Singapore, Germany and the US. In situations of change, individuals as well as social groups mobilize rituals to reaffirm a sense of identity. Usually thinking of rituals as fixed sets of symbolic behaviour, handed down through generations, migration forces a fresh look at rituals: that they are open to change and adjustment as well as means of social transformation. In the ghetto, transit and concentration camp Theresienstadt, film recordings were made with the forced participation of the deportees and became known under the title "Theresienstadt - A Documentary from the Jewish Settlement Area". As a particularly perfidious part of National Socialist propaganda, these recordings continue to have an impact to the present day: Deniers of the National Socialist genocide still refer to this film today. In this anthology, the special position of Theresienstadt is examined on various levels. In addition to the analysis of eyewitness interviews, sociological, philosophical, and historiographical reflections on the circumstances, conditions, and peculiarities of Terezin are included.

Zu den Aufgaben der aktuellen wissenssoziologischen Forschung gehort es, sich mit den zeitdiagnostischen Implikationen der gesellschaftlichen Bedeutung von Wissen zu beschaftigen. Das Betatigungsfeld der Wissenssoziologie geht jedoch weit uber diesen Bereich hinaus. Mit der vorliegenden Rezensionssammlung unternehmen die Herausgeber den Versuch, anhand ausgesuchter Beispiele - ohne Anspruch auf Vollstandigkeit - die Breite des Spektrums wissenssoziologischer Theorie und Empirie aufzuzeigen.
