This handbook explores the ways biomedicine and pop culture interact while simultaneously introducing the reader with the tools and ideas behind this new field of enquiry. From comic books to health professionals, from the arts to genetics, from sci-fi to medical education, from TV series to ethics, it offers different entry points to an exciting and central aspect of contemporary culture: how and what we learn about (and from) scientific knowledge and its representation in pop culture. Divided into three sections the handbook surveys the basics, the micro-, and the macroaspects of this interaction between specialized knowledge and cultural production: After the introduction of basic concepts of and approaches to the topic from a variety of disciplines, the respective theories and methods are applied in specific case studies. The final section is concerned with larger social and historical trends of the use of biomedical knowledge in popular culture. Presenting over twenty-five original articles from international scholars with different disciplinary backgrounds, this handbook introduces the topic of pop culture and biomedicine to both new and mature researchers alike. The articles, all complete with a rich source of further references, are aimed at being a sincere entry point to researchers and academic educators interested in this somewhat unexplored field of culture and biomedicine.

Examines medical history in northern Europe from 1850 to 2015 and sheds new light on the circulation of medical knowledge in that region The Baltic Sea region in northern Europe, with its history of multiple cultural and social transformations, as well as mixture of national and regional scientific styles, has lately attracted much attention from scholars of various disciplines. This book explores the history of medicine in the Baltic Sea region and provides different answers to one central question: How has the circulation of knowledge in the Baltic Sea region influenced medicine as a discipline, and illness as an experience, during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries? The anthology consists of ten chapters that shed new light on how medical ideas and devices were developed in different contexts. Illuminating currents of traditions, contact zones, and areas of conflict, essays in this collection discuss technological, social, and economic aspects relevant for the exchange of medical knowledge across the Baltic Sea. Wie formulierten, konstituierten und verbreiteten Wissenschaftler zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts eine Biomedizin im Sinne eines physiko-chemischen, technischen Verstandnisses der Lebensprozesse? Dieser Frage geht Heiner Fangerau nach, indem er den Einsatz des deutsch-amerikanischen Physiologen Jacques Loeb fur eine internationale biomedizinische Grundlagenforschung analysiert. Am Beispiel dieses Forschers, der zu den ersten Wissenschaftlern zahlt, die u.a. am Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research die Idee der Biomedizin verkorperten, untersucht der Autor die externen Bedingungen, die um 1900 den Etablierungsprozess dieses Konzeptes begleiteten. Daruber hinaus pruft der Autor, durch welche internen Prozesse die Wissenschaft sich ihre Gegenstande selbst formte. Im Zuge dieser differenzierten Betrachtung werden die Forschungsleistung von Jacques Loeb und sein Einsatz fur eine "Technische Biologie" als Basis der modernen Biomedizin transparent. Neben der Ausformulierung der Forschungsthemen von Jacques Loeb bietet die Monographie eine Darstellung seiner Epistemologie und seiner Methoden zur Generierung von Wissen. Intracerebral interventions raise particular ethical issues. For instance, attempts at replacing lost or altered brain cells with the help of stem cells or the therapeutic application of Deep Brain Stimulation would have morally relevant implications. Many medically relevant questions and ethical concerns need to be clarified before these intracerebral interventions can become routine procedure: If the brain is conceived as the carrier of an individual's personality or of the self then operations on the brain can be seen as intrusions upon one's personality. The book addresses historical, philosophical, social and legal implications of these new developments in the neurosciences and aims at resolving some of the dilemmas that go hand in hand with "implanted minds".
