First published in 1986, this book reviews research on the role
parents play in fostering the early development of children with
mental handicaps. Professionals and parents must work together to
give such children the chance of living as ordinary lives as
possible and here, the author develops a broadly-based conceptual
framework for the involvement of parents as teachers of their young
handicapped children. McConachie identifies characteristics of
parents which seem of particular relevance to the design and
success of intervention programmes. Although written in the 1980s,
this book discusses topics that are still important today.
The aim of the Exploring Feelings Training Manual by Helen
McConachie based on Dr. Tony Attwood's Exploring Feelings: Anxiety
book, is to guide people wishing to use the Exploring Feelings
materials in group settings with young people who have Autism
Spectrum Disorder and high anxiety. The Manual is written with the
expectation that group leaders will have support from an
experienced supervisor. It is for professionals with a background
in Cognitive Behavior Therapy who work with young people with
Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families. This Manual is
intended as an adjunct training resource for group leaders and
supervisors who are using Exploring Feelings: Anxiety: Cognitive
Behavior Therapy to Manage Anxiety by Tony Attwood.
