The existence of coherent excitations in active biological systems has been established in recent years. The present book aims at presenting a survey on the many features that such ex citations can exhibit. This does not mean that a "theory of biology" has been established but it implies that such a theory will make use of such excitations. It is hoped that the present book will help in this direction. Die Elektronentheorie der Metalle ist gegenwartig so weit fort. gesehritten, daB sie fast aIle Eigensehaften der Metalle erklart und schon auf einigen Gebieten vollstandige quantitative Angaben maehen kann. Dieses Bueh solI eine Einfiihrung fiir diejenigen sein, die die Entwieklung der Theorie nieht im einzelnen verfolgt haben. leh habe dabei insbesondere an den Experimentalphysiker gedaeht, der sieh mit Metallphysik besehiiftigt, und der sieher aus der Theorie manehe Anregung sehopfen kann. leh habe mieh daher bemiiht, mit mogliehst einfaehen mathematisehen Hilfsmitteln auszu. kommen, und andererseits iiberall, wo es moglieh ist, die Ergebnisse der Theorie mit den Experimenten zu vergleiehen.
