Shanghai-based Atelier Deshaus, founded in 2001 as one of the first private architectural firms in China, is one of the country's most important and innovative design studios. The architects made their name worldwide in 2014 with the much-acclaimed West Bund site for Shanghai's Long Museum, which has since been followed by a series of further museum and other art-related projects. Such cultural and community buildings of various scale are the main focus of Atelier Deshaus, who refuse the usual commercial construction tasks in China. Their formally strong buildings are developed from reading the site with special attention being paid to the preservation of Shanghai's industrial heritage after decades of a tabula rasa policy in the city's urban development. At the core of this first monograph are Atelier Deshaus's 20 most important designs from two decades. They are documented in rich detail through plans and images as well as concise explanatory texts by the architects. In an extensive conversation with Hubertus Adam, the firm's principals Liu Yichun and Chen Yifeng offer insights into their way of thinking, their understanding of Chinese tradition, their relation to art, and the challenges of working as a non-governmental office in China. Additional essays place Atelier Deshaus in the context of contemporary international architecture and discuss their key projects with regard to constructive qualities and atmosphere.
From hand-made brick to high-tech product: building with blocks of fired clay today draws from a heritage of nine millennia and remains innovative, sustainable, and highly appreciated for its manifold applications. Since 2004, Wienerberger, the world's largest manufacturer of bricks and other clay building materials, biannually presents the international Brick Award as a scene for outstanding achievements in brick architecture. The 2020 edition of this master class saw 644 submissions from fifty-five countries that were reviewed by an international jury of experts. This book features the fifty nominees and the six winning designs, which are located in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Central America. All projects are presented in texts and richly illustrated with atmospheric images, site and floor plans, views, elevations and sections. Five topical essays by international authors, discussing the winning buildings in a wider context, round out this celebration of contemporary brick architecture.
Now as before, Japanese architecture is very popular in Europe and the western world. This publication provides an overview of its many design concepts and cross-references. Using design examples and interviews, the book presents thirteen current positions. The publication focuses on young architects who take up extremely independent positions within Japanese architecture, as well as on Pritzker Prize winners Toyo Ito and Fumihiko Maki. Six essays by European specialists on Japan provide supplementary insights into the aesthetics and space concepts of Japanese architecture, making cross-references to Japan's architectural history, and explaining current lines of development. The book thus combines a self-reflective approach with an outsider's analytical view.
For around two decades, the architectural duo of Niklaus Graber & Christoph Steiger from Lucerne have been continuously working on the design and construction of high quality buildings that can without doubt be regarded as an enrichment to Swiss building culture. Although the architects attempt to make their works generally understandable and give them a timeless legibility, when designing them they take the risk of fundamentally questioning the relevant task. That often leads to surprising interpretations and tailored solutions that reveal the specific characteristics of each project. By now, their work includes private family homes and apartment buildings, as well as a considerable number of public buildings for educational, cultural, industrial and tourist purposes, which have attracted a great deal of attention on the specialist scene both in Switzerland and abroad. For instance the extension to a window factory in Hagendorn, the therapy centre for the Heilpadagogische Zentrum Uri and the panorama gallery on the peak of Mt. Pilatus have been awarded national and international architecture prizes. Text in German, with English translation booklet enclosed.
Sustainability has become a guiding principle of the twenty-first century. For the architectural office Bob Gysin + Partner BGP, this is not only an ecological premise but also stimulates and drives its architectural work. They have been setting standards with this approach for forty years and count among the leaders and pioneers in the European architecture scene. The catalogue presents their modes of thought and methods and provides insight into their planning and implementation practices, which can be attributed to the uniqueness of their projects-from the Chriesbach aquatic research institute to the new headquarters of Greenpeace. It is furthermore an opportunity to address the simultaneous practice of architecture and art and their interconnectedness with sustainability. At the same time, it repeatedly succeeds in transgressing boundaries as well as connecting social involvement and cultural relevance with one another.
