Discourse as Data - A Guide for Analysis (Hardcover): Margaret Wetherell, Stephanie J. A. Taylor, Simeon J. Yates Discourse as Data - A Guide for Analysis (Hardcover)
Margaret Wetherell, Stephanie J. A. Taylor, Simeon J. Yates
R3,899 Discovery Miles 38 990 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

`A highly effective introduction which gives readers a clear sense of how to analyze discourse data and then employ the analytic approaches in their own research' - David Silverman, Goldsmiths College, University of London, United Kingdom This workbook will be invaluable for students across the social sciences who need to learn how to analyze discourse. Using a step-by-step approach, students are introduced to the principal range of methods for analyzing different types of text, taken through key analytic concepts, offered specimen analyses and given the opportunity to try out analytic concepts on new data. Discourse as Data is organized around eight chapters, six of which are related to the domains covered in the Reader, and top and tailed by two chapters which set up common methodological issues in discourse research relevant to all approaches (such as transcription and the application and the critical evaluation of discourse research). Though the text will be a perfect companion to the simultaneously published Reader, its broad coverage, combined with didactic, practical guidance should make this important reading for any student or researcher wishing to learn more about discourse analysis. This book will be ideal as a teaching tool, and an invaluable aid on discourse analysis courses, which have a practical content, most notably within the fields of psychology, cultural and media studies, sociology and linguistics.

Grist Mill Road is a chilling and heart-stopping thriller about friendship, family and revenge.

Doing Social Science Research (Hardcover): Simeon J. Yates Doing Social Science Research (Hardcover)
Simeon J. Yates
R3,880 Discovery Miles 38 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Doing Social Science Research gives an introductory overview of the process of social research, from research design to data collection and analysis. It provides students and teachers with a mix of resources to help them to get to grips with the main methods of social research. These resources include a set of self-directed activities designed to get students using research methods, as well as a set of readings to support these activities. The readings also provide critical discussions and examples of the range of research methods.

The text offers a comprehensive introduction to the full range of research methods in the social sciences, such as:

ˇ Survey research

ˇ Experimental research

ˇ Statistical analysis

ˇ Interview research

ˇ Ethnographic research

ˇ Qualitative data analysis

ˇ Discourse analysis

The text clearly explains what these methods involve, as well as their basic relationship to arguments in the philosophy of social science. It will provide students and researchers with essential guidance on how to select the most appropriate method in their own research, as well as understanding and evaluating research conducted by others.

Doing Social Science Research will be an invaluable resource for students taking introductory courses in social research at both postgraduate and undergraduate level. It is a set text for the Open University's Social Science Postgraduate Foundation Module (D820 The Challenge of the Social Sciences).

What's the worst thing you can do to Shakespeare? The answer is simple: don't read him. To that end, Richard Burt and Julian Yates embark here on a project of un/reading the Bard, through both reverent and irreverent discourse. Addressing recent critical debates around problems of print and performance, works in media theory and deconstruction, and film adaptations, the chapters uncover areas of confluence and reveal the inventive ways in which these areas respond to each other. Ultimately, this book turns conventional challenges into a roadmap for textual analysis and a thorough reconsideration of the plays in light of their absorption into global culture.

Biofeedback and the Modification of Behavior (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1980): Aubrey J. Yates Biofeedback and the Modification of Behavior (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1980)

In this book, I have attempted to evaluate critically the very large literature which has accumulated in the area of biofeedback over the past 10-15 years. As might be expected in any area of psychology with clinical possibilities, the literature divides itself into two main categories-fundamental research studies and therapeutic studies. It is now apparent that the clinical applications of biofeed back have far outstripped their fundamental research bases, with the inevitable result that the initial wave of enthusiasm may be replaced with an unnecessarily severe skepticism. Either extreme position is unjustified. Biofeedback does rep resent an important new approach to the elucidation of the role played by internal systems in the adjustment of the organism to its environment. But its potential will only be revealed if its use in practice is soundly based on fundamental research. There are promising signs that this is being realized so that there is cause for optimism. Aubrey J. Yates Perth, Australia A Note on the References With the exception of no more than two or three papers, all the references in this book have been obtained and read. However, many of them were published in journals which will not be readily accessible to the reader who may be interested in consulting more directly particular articles which attract his attention."

The Other Abyssinians - The Northern Oromo and the Creation of Modern Ethiopia, 1855-1913 (Hardcover): Brian J. Yates The Other Abyssinians - The Northern Oromo and the Creation of Modern Ethiopia, 1855-1913 (Hardcover)

Reframes the story of modern Ethiopia around the contributions of the Oromo people and the culturally fluid union of communities that shaped the nation's politics and society. Although the Oromo are the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia, their history has been distorted in order to buttress twentieth-century notions of a homogeneous Ethiopian state. The Other Abyssinians tells the story of the Oromo people's contribution to modern Ethiopia, tracing their experiences from the early nineteenth century onward and detailing the varied interactions of Oromo groups throughout the Ethiopian highlands. Focusing on the historic provinces of Wallo and Shawa, this well-researched work elucidates the importance of these territories in the creation of Ethiopia and the history of the Oromo. It casts the Oromo as Abyssinians and central in all aspects of modernEthiopian life, while making a case for Ethiopia, a nation without a colonial legacy, as an example of indigenous African identity formation that challenges notions of "tribal" or ethnic identities. Author Brian J. Yates details the cultural practices that integrated the populations of the highlands into the Abyssinian group; in addition, he analyzes the political structures that evolved concurrently. The book, notably, utilizes a community-based framework to underscore the fluidity of modern national identity. All in all, the work offers a close study of Ethiopian modernization policies and illuminates how Africans might have crafted their nations without the legaciesof colonialism.

One game. Six students. Five survivors. It was only ever meant to be a game. A game of consequences, of silly forfeits, childish dares. A game to be played by six best friends in their first year at Oxford University. But then the game changed: the stakes grew higher and the dares more personal, more humiliating, finally evolving into a vicious struggle with unpredictable and tragic results. Now, fourteen years later, the remaining players must meet again for the final round.

The hero of this book was working in a coal mine at age twelve. Despite his lack of education, he pulled himself up to become a highly successful businessman. There is something quintessentially heroic about defying the hopeless hand one was dealt . . . and turning it into straight aces. The fact that our hero John lost it all on another gamble just makes him more truly human and fragile. "From pride, from greed, he fell anew; by woman's wiles was pierced through. Like Icarus, he flew too high and tried too hard to touch the sky."

There have been great advances in recent years in the area of indoor navigation. Many of these new navigation systems rely on digital images to aid an inertial navigation estimates. The Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) has been conducting research in this area for a number of years. The image-aiding techniques are centered around tracking stationary features in order to improve inertial navigation estimates. Previous research has used stereo vision systems or terrain constraints with monocular systems to estimate feature locations. While these methods have shown good results, they do have drawbacks. First, as unmanned exploration vehicles become smaller in size the distance available to create a baseline between two cameras decreases resulting in a decrease of distancing accuracy. Second, if using a monocular system, terrain data might not be known in an unexplored environment. This research explores the use of a small gimbaled laser range sensor and monocular camera to estimate feature locations.
