This volume discusses the importance of a multidimensional and
multidisciplinary approach to Christian formation based upon godly
love and the imago Dei (Latin, image of God). Grounded biblically
and theologically, this interdisciplinary collection offers
perspectives drawn from spirituality, ethics, philosophy,
psychology, counselling, ecclesiology, physical health sciences,
and leadership studies. Contributors address spiritual, emotional,
and psychological formation, while highlighting how suffering has
the potential to draw one closer to God and others. The book also
details vocational development, appropriate stewardship of the
physical body, and the ways in which the Eucharist sacramentally
contributes to the process of formation. The book concludes with a
call for further exploration of additional research trajectories,
not the least of which is how Christian formation contributes to
the missio Dei, the mission of God.
Local government in the UK is in crisis. It is now neither local in
terms of the geography and populations of its principle units, nor
does it truly govern in these areas. As this book reveals, over the
previous 200 years local government has moved from a system in
which local interests held governance over localities to one in
which central government and national and multi-national agencies
such as corporate businesses hold governance over local and
community decision-making. These changes seriously undermine the
important role that local government can play in liberal democracy
in the UK. The book explains the nature of local government today
and asks if there is any possibility of change. -- .
Drawing on a range of evidence related to royal authority,
political events and literate culture, this study traces how kings
and emperors involved themselves in the affairs of the Spanish
March, and examines how actively people in Catalonia participated
in politics centred on the royal court. Rather than setting the
political development of the region in terms of Catalonia's future
independence as a medieval principality, Cullen J. Chandler
addresses it as part of the Carolingian 'experiment'. In doing so,
he incorporates an analysis of political events alongside an
examination of such cultural issues as the spread of the Rule of
Benedict, the Adoptionist controversy, and the educational
programme of the Carolingian reforms. This new history of the
region offers a robust and absorbing analysis of the nature of the
Carolingian legacy in the March, while also revising traditional
interpretations of ethnic motivations for political acts and
earlier attempts to pinpoint the constitutional birth of Catalonia.

Explaining local government, available at last in paperback,
uniquely presents a history of local government in Britain from
1800 until the present day. The study explains how the institution
evolved from a structure that appeared to be relatively free from
central government interference to, as John Prescott observes, 'one
of the most centralised systems of government in the Western
world'. The book is accessible to A level and undergraduate
students as an introduction to the development of local government
in Britain but also balances values and political practice to
provide a unique explanation, using primary research, of the
evolution of the system. -- .

formation weaves together biblical and theological foundations with
interdisciplinary scholarship, real-world examples, personal
vignettes, and practical tools to assist readers in becoming whole
persons in relationship with God and others.
Slope stability is dependant on climatic, geological,
morphological, structural geotechnical and seismatic factors. This
volume draws on the experience and extensive research of an
international authorship to bring together material of importance
to ground engineers. It covers factors contributing to slope
stability, causes of landslides, their prevention, new techniques
for assessing and predicting stability, new methods for stabilising
slopes and the special considerations for coastal situations.

Not only an accessible hands-on guide to writing criticism across
the literary arts, the dramatic arts, and the narrative screen
arts, but also a book that makes a case for how and why criticism
matters today Doing Criticism: Across Literary and Screen Arts is a
practical guide to engaging actively and productively with a
critical object, whether a film, a novel, or a play. Going beyond
the study of lyric poetry and literature to include motion picture
and dramatic arts, this unique text provides specific advice on how
to best write criticism while offering concrete illustrations of
what it looks like on the page. Divided into two parts, the book
first presents an up-to-date account of the state of criticism in
both Anglo-American and Continental contexts--describing both the
longstanding mission and the changing functions of criticism over
the centuries and discussing critical issues that bridge the
literary and screen arts in the contemporary world. The second part
of the book features a variety of case studies of criticism across
media, including works by canonical authors such as Jane Austen,
Charles Dickens, and W. B. Yeats; films such as Coppola's The
Conversation and Hitchcock's Vertigo; screen adaptations of Mary
Shelley's Frankenstein and Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day; and a
concluding chapter on several of Spike Lee's film "joints" that
brings several of the book's central concepts to bear on work of a
single film auteur. Helping students of literature and cinema write
well about what they find in their reading and viewing, Doing
Criticism: Across Literary and Screen Arts Discusses how the
bridging of the literary arts and screen arts can help criticism
flourish in the present day Illustrates how the doing of criticism
is in practice a particular kind of writing Considers how to
generalize the consequences of criticism beyond personal growth and
gratification Addresses the ways the practice of criticism matters
to the practice of the critical object Suggests that doing without
criticism is not only unwise, but also perhaps impossible Features
case studies organized under the rubrics of conversation,
adaptation, genre, authorship and seriality Doing Criticism: Across
Literary and Screen Arts is an ideal text for students in
introductory courses in criticism, literary studies, and film
studies, as well as general readers with interest in the subject.
Derived from the deepest depths of the human heart and mind, "The
Abstract Mind" contains both short stories and poems which detail
the raw mentality of the emotions and feelings which engulf human
nature. These short stories and poems tell of love and passion and
power and strength; they, too, touch upon sadness and fear,
confusion and acknowledgement. "The Abstract Mind," although short
in length, expands upon what it really means to be human, and
throughout these stories one shall truly see what hides behind an
abstract mind.
This study analyzes the impact General O.P. Weyland had on close
air support in the Korean War. First, the author briefly traces the
history and evolution of air-ground support from its infancy to the
start of the Korean War. Then, the focus shifts to the
effectiveness of close air support throughout the conflict and why
this mission was so controversial for the Army and Air Force.
Finally, the study highlights General Weyland's perspective on
tactical airpower and his role in the close air support
"controversy." Throughout his career, Weyland was a staunch
advocate of tactical airpower. As Patton's airman in World War II,
Far East Air Force commander in Korea, and the commander of
Tactical Air Command in the mid-50s, Weyland helped the tactical
air community carve out its role as a critical instrument of
national power.
Twenty-five years ago the causes and consequences of global warming
began to concern Science Fiction author J. Chandler Nash. He never
imagined that he would live to see the catastrophic results
beginning to play out in his lifetime: radical weather, devastating
fires of global consequence, food shortages, rapid planetary
deforestation, and accelerating rates of extinctions. Far greater
than any science fiction scenario, it is this unimaginable threat
largely unaddressed by world governments that prompted him to write
The Dying Planet. Set in the not too distant future, a monumental
catastrophe looms over planet Earth unknown to its few surviving
inhabitants. All technology and social order has long since
vanished in a world devastated by severe drought and unpredictable
killer storms. Three isolated groups, remnants of a tattered
humanity, try to make a life for themselves while struggling
against lawless predators and a fiercely hostile climate. Scout
Clayton Smith, settles his tiny wandering band by a shrinking lake
in the Sierras. Tensions mount as they build a new order for
themselves, until they are suddenly confronted by a threat that
would rob them of their resources, their freedom, and their lives.
Little by little they pull together to persevere, but they are
never entirely free of the evil that stalks them. A young drifter,
Vince Corning, finally finds his place in a small river community,
and meets the love of his life, the beautiful Carmen. Held together
by the iron fist of Carmen's stepfather, Skeeter Jones, the
community persists in a quest for resources that spares no one.
Jones, who holds a bitter grudge against Corning, goes head to head
with him in a struggle that lands Vince on the wrong side of the
law. After losing a horrific battle to defend the last of their
black gold, two ex-roughnecks, Gardner Wells and Carter Singleton,
are reduced to a miserable life as sneak thieves in order to fend
off starvation on the parched tundra of the far north. Only their
wits can save them. Against the background of a life and death
struggle facing the survivors, a saga of love, loss, and life
renewed plays out beyond all odds. Will they survive what a global
system, long forgotten and drastically out of balance, has in store
for them?
