A volume in a set of monographs which present a broad and
comprehensive consideration of European views on Weber's relevance
to twentieth century sociology.
From Leonardo to Oppenheimer, from candles to lasers, from cave
drawings to cinema, from stonehenge to quantum mechanics, from
Genesis to the Big Bang, light has filled our thoughts, our way of
life, our aesthetics, our technology, and our means for survival.
Richard Weiss leads us along these paths over the past 500 light
years. The way is lit by pioneers such as Rembrandt, Einstein, D W
Griffith, Newton, and Heisenberg. A BRIEF HISTORY OF LIGHT, AND
THOSE THAT LIT THE WAY is a summer's day roller-coaster ride
through five centuries of man's achievements in understanding and
manipulating light.
Literacy educators and researchers at all stages of their careers
face ethical issues whenever they embark on research studies. In
this book experienced literacy researchers identify and address
multi-faceted, multi-dimensional ethical issues related to
conducting studies in school, home, community, and virtual settings
and share actions taken when faced with ethical dilemmas in their
own investigations. Each chapter addresses a specific literacy
research ethical issue. Part I focuses on conducting research in
settings such as schools or literacy clinics. Part Two addresses
research with pre-service teachers in college/university and school
settings. Part Three looks at research in virtual worlds and online
environments. Pedagogical features in each chapter engage readers
in making connections between what they are reading and their own
teaching and learning situations: A vignette to help readers
understand the issue; pre-reading questions ; background
information drawn from current research literature; suggested
engagement activities; chapter summary. Additional resources

This volume provides the student of Weber with the only
comprehensive account of the communist critique of Weber. It
discusses a question of fundamental importance to the entire
discussion and critique of Weberian thinking by Marxist theorists.
Real world negotiation examples and strategies from one of the most
highly respected authorities in the field This unique book can help
you change your approach to negotiation by learning key strategies
and techniques from actual cases. Through hard to find real world
examples you will learn exactly how to effectively and productively
negotiate. The Book of Real World Negotiations: Successful
Strategies from Business, Government and Daily Life shines a light
on real world negotiation examples and cases, rather than
discussing hypothetical scenarios. It reveals what is possible
through preparation, persistence, creativity, and taking a
strategic approach to your negotiations. Many of us enter
negotiations with skepticism and without understanding how to truly
negotiate well. Because we lack knowledge and confidence, we may
abandon the negotiating process prematurely or agree to deals that
leave value on the table. The Book of Real World Negotiations will
change that once and for all by immersing you in these real world
scenarios. As a result, you'll be better able to grasp the true
power of negotiation to deal with some of the most difficult
problems you face or to put together the best deals possible. This
book also shares critical insights and lessons for instructors and
students of negotiation, especially since negotiation is now being
taught in virtually all law schools, many business schools, and in
the field of conflict resolution. Whether you're a student,
instructor, or anyone who wants to negotiate successfully, you'll
be able to carefully examine real world negotiation situations that
will show you how to achieve your objectives in the most
challenging of circumstances. The cases are organized by
realms--domestic business cases, international business cases,
governmental cases and cases that occur in daily life. From these
cases you will learn more about: Exactly how to achieve Win-Win
outcomes The critical role of underlying interests The kind of
thinking that goes into generating creative options How to consider
your and the other negotiator's Best Alternative to a Negotiated
Agreement (BATNA) Negotiating successfully in the face of power
Achieving success when negotiating cross-culturally Once you come
to understand through these cases that negotiation is the art of
the possible, you'll stop saying "a solution is impossible." With
the knowledge and self-assurance you gain from this book, you'll
roll up your sleeves and keep negotiating until you reach a
mutually satisfactory outcome!

"What singles this book out is the sheer diversity of instruments
covered this is a very welcome book. It is fair to say that the
science of percussion instruments would not have advanced anywhere
near so far without the tireless enthusiasm and passion of Rossing
and his students."Nature, 2001"It forms a very nice survey work on
an entire class of musical instruments I recommend it to anyone
interested in acoustics and the physics of musical
instruments."American Journal of Physics, Sept 2001
Investment projects are an important mechanism for economic
development. However, their costs and benefits must be assessed to
ensure that the resources committed are being used as productively
as possible. This book explains the techniques available to assess
the economic impact of projects in developing countries. It draws
on the authors' experience in teaching and applying these
techniques and combines relevant economic theory with a clear
understanding of what can be done in practice. The book aims to
make existing techniques readily accessible to both students and
practitioners. The second edition has been rewritten with new
project examples and the addition of two new chapters in finance
and the environment.
Zentralbehoerden behandelt. Ein Register erleichtert den Zugang zu
den Detailinformationen. Die Fortsetzung des Bandes zur
Sakularisation ist durch den Autor in Vorbereitung.
Analysis of variance is the backbone of experimental research. This
book is a clear and straightforward guide to how to do the
analyses, with an emphasis on how to interpret statistical results
and translate them into prose that will clearly tell the audience
what the data are saying. There are plenty of end-of-chapter
practice problems, all with suggested answers. Life in the
laboratory doesn't always follow the script, so both new and
established techniques are presented for coping with non-standard
situations. Because data analysis is not a closed subject, pros and
cons are presented for various options. The final chapter is the
first elementary presentation of functional measurement, a
methodology built upon analysis of variance. Initially developed by
Norman H Anderson, functional measurement (also known as
information integration theory) offers a powerful technology for
studying cognitive processes. The accompanying CD contains analysis
of variance software that is easy to use (really!), with an
interface that greets the user with appropriate requests. In
addition to programs for standard analyses, the software includes
several specialized routines that have heretofore been presented
only in journals. This guide will be an important resource for
students and professionals in the social, behavioural and
neurosciences.

Ward Edwards is well known as the father of behavioral decision
making. In his 1954 Psychological Bulletin paper on decision
making, he brought psychological ideas into what had been the
province of economists. His influence in this realm is so pervasive
that the Nobel committee was able to trace a direct path from
Edwards's work to Daniel Kahneman's 2002 Prize for prospect theory.
In a 1963 Psychological Review paper, Edwards brought Bayesian
statistics to the attention of psychologists, who have continued to
proliferate Bayesian ideas, underscoring the importance of the
perspective. In a 1962 IEEE paper, Edwards foresaw how the world of
intelligence gathering and analysis could by transformed by systems
in which humans provided (subjective) probabilities and machines
provided computational power. He also showed, in a 1986 book
written with Detlof von Winterfeldt, how multiattribute utility
analysis could help real-world decision makers generate
satisfactory solutions to complex problems.
In this book, 29 of Ward Edwards's most important published papers
are reprinted, a selection that spans six decades, allowing the
reader to see how this strikingly creative thinker generated many
of the ideas that are now core beliefs among current researchers.
It is perhaps less well known that Edwards continued to make
substantial contributions during the years after his retirement.
Illness reduced his public appearances, but he continued his
incisive thinking behind the scenes. At the time of his passing, he
was involved in several projects, and seven new papers from these
projects were completed for this book by his last set of
collaborators.
Edwards's papers are a treat to read. His prose is the model of
elegant simplicity, yet full of style and wit. With each paper, the
editors have included a short introduction that presents Edwards's
reflections on the content or impact of the older papers, or
describes the creation of the new ones. Obituaries written by
former students and colleagues flesh out the human side of this
remarkable scholar.

"Sorry About That is a cautionary tale that must be read. The
author insists that if we are not vigilant - if we do not defend
our national political inheritance - a leadership, lacking
transparency and exploiting our confusion, will do it for us." Dr.
Stephen J. Weiss, author, Second Chance, from his Introduction What
would you do if you realized that our political and military
leaders were engaged in actions that you believed were wrong? In
June 1967, Dick Denne returned home from Vietnam as a highly
decorated, exemplary U.S. combat paratrooper. Within a year, he
found himself in a military prison, where he was denied due process
and subjected to the worst abuse imaginable - all at the hands at
U.S. soldiers. Denne's crime? Speaking out against the U.S.
presence in Vietnam and questioning the motives of our leaders -
all while wearing his military uniform and in the service of his
country. The irony? Dick Denne was never supposed to be in the
infantry. All he ever wanted to be was a comedian. Instead, through
a series of snafus that would make Hawkeye Pierce blush, he found
himself assigned to the legendary 101st Airborne, the "No Slack"
Battalion, where he repeatedly faced death and the horrors of
combat during a then-unprecedented 270 consecutive days in the
field. A good soldier, Denne earned many medals, including the
Combat Infantryman Badge (one of the highest honors the U.S. Army
can bestow on its own). But during his tour of duty, he developed a
"soldier's heart" and became increasingly disillusioned with the
U.S. mission in Vietnam. At a time when protests against the war
were mounting across America, Denne was branded a troublemaker by
the Army and nearly paid the ultimate price for exercising his
freedom of speech. A heart-wrenching story about Vietnam that is
still timely today, Sorry About That combines the drama of combat,
the unique camaraderie that Denne experienced with his fellow
soldiers, and the internal conflict that he felt every day as a
young teenager, forced to grow up fast while trying to do the right
thing - for himself, and for his country.
