Scotland’s economic capacity to prosper independently of Britain
has become a key political issue, dominating the independence
referendum of 2014 and continuing to influence British politics
since. But, as this book shows, the Scottish economy is not merely
a statistical object – it is also a political, sociological and
cultural idea which has been imagined and constructed. The book
explores the history of how Scotland has been framed in statistical
and policy terms, which are laden with conflicts over meaning,
ranging from class struggles and struggles against "external
control" to the ongoing debate over national independence. Using
Scotland as a case study for examining the political meaning of
"the economy", the book also considers the origins of efforts to
measure the Scottish economy in the British nationalist terms of
"regional policy". It then considers the influence, in turn, of
North Sea oil, globalisation/Europeanisation, class dealignment and
neoliberal "enterprise" ideology in changing the meanings attached
to the Scottish economy. These form necessary conditions for the
debate on national independence, where the nature and the future of
the Scottish economy remain the central controversy. By examining
the economic ideas of a self-proclaimed "cosmopolitan" nationalist
movement, the study will offer deeper insights into how
nationalists are adapting to the crisis of globalisation. This book
marks a significant contribution to the literature on Scottish
independence as well as economic sociology, nationalism, critical
geography and political economy more broadly.
The divided families problem is a serious social issue in North and
South Korea, involving hundreds of thousands of first generation
divided family members, most of whom have not seen their relatives
since the Korean War. It is the most pressing humanitarian issue
between the two Koreas, and is connected to the greater issue of
human rights in North Korea today. However, little serious academic
work exists on the subject, in either English or Korean. This new
study, based on research conducted in Korea, including interviews
in 2001 with Korean families who benefited from the most recent
exchanges, addresses the many issues surrounding the divided family
problem, and highlights its importance in the path towards Korean
rapprochement.

Since the referendum, Scottish independence has been captured by
conservative forces. Scotland After Britain argues for fidelity to
the true meaning of the word independence. It should mean not only
a break from the failing British state, but also from the prison of
free trade and militarism that has delivered successive crises.
Most of all, independence must honestly address the huge injustices
of income, wealth and power that continue to define Scottish
society, by restoring agency to working class communities and
voters. Scotland After Britain shines a spotlight on
pro-independence politics since Brexit and the pandemic. The
Scottish national question has emerged as the biggest fracture in
the British state after Brexit. The independence movement emerged
from mass public disenchantment at the status quo, yet the SNP
continues governing as if that disenchantment never happened, and
the party leadership appears increasingly ambivalent about the
risks of demanding independence. Most of all, the British state
remains hostile to allowing a second referendum, while the SNP
leadership has been unwilling to sanction protest beyond the ballot
box. Where do we go from here? Scotland After Britain argues Brexit
could force the movement to engage in a reckoning with the true
stakes of independence, a process that will inevitably require a
breach with the SNP's establishment vision.
The 'standard theory' of Chomsky and Halle has dominated phonology
in recent years. It has been subject to modification and to
criticism but not of a really fundamental kind. Dr Foley does here
offer a fundamental criticism and a genuine theoretical
alternative. He argues that transformational phonology, like
previous phonological systems, is primarily concerned with the
description of superficial sound changes and not with the
underlying processes and rules; it is perhaps more accurately
termed 'transformational phonetics' for that reason. A theoretical
phonology, he argues, will consist of a system of phonological
elements, a set of universal rules relating these elements and a
set of principles governing the operation of the phonological
rules. The basic phonological elements are therefore defined not by
physical acoustic or articulatory parameters, but by their
participation in rules. Such a theory is developed here and
illustrated in the analysis of various phonological problems. It is
shown that many apparently diverse phenomena can thus be connected
and explained and so be subject to genuinely scientific enquiry.
The project of European integration has undergone a succession of
shocks, beginning with the Eurozone crisis, followed by reactions
to the sudden growth of irregular migration, and, most recently,
the coronavirus pandemic. These shocks have politicised questions
related to the governance of borders and markets that for decades
had been beyond the realm of contestation. For some time, these
questions have been spilling over into domestic and European
electoral politics, with the rise of "populist" and Eurosceptic
parties. Increasingly, however, the crises have begun to reshape
the liberal narratives that have been central to the European
project. This book charts the rise of contestation over the meaning
of "Europe", particularly in light of the coronavirus crisis and
Brexit. Drawing together cutting edge, interdisciplinary
scholarship from across the continent, it questions not merely the
traditional conflict between European and nationalist politics, but
the impact of contestation on the assumed "cosmopolitan" values of
Europe.
Is Scottish independence incompatible with ‘Labour values’? Are
‘Labour values’ being realised within the Union? How much
really divides Yes campaigners from Labour voters? Why Not?
Scotland, Labour and Independence is a passionate and often
personal appeal to Labour voters (and other progressive Scots) to
consider the social, economic and political gains that could be won
with Scottish self-government. Bringing together a range of diverse
voices – some from within the Labour Party, some from within the
SNP, some from the non-aligned Left – it presents the social
justice case for a Yes vote and argues that independence offers the
clearest route forward for socialist and centre-left Scotland.
Urgent, original and provocative, Why Not? is a vital contribution
to the independence debate – and essential reading for all Scots.
"Computer Graphics: Principles and Practice, Third Edition, "
remains the most authoritative introduction to the field. The first
edition, the original "Foley and van Dam," helped to define
computer graphics and how it could be taught. The second edition
became an even more comprehensive resource for practitioners and
students alike. This third edition has been completely rewritten to
provide detailed and up-to-date coverage of key concepts,
algorithms, technologies, and applications. The authors explain the
principles, as well as the mathematics, underlying computer
graphics-knowledge that is essential for successful work both now
and in the future. Early chapters show how to create 2D and 3D
pictures right away, supporting experimentation. Later chapters,
covering a broad range of topics, demonstrate more sophisticated
approaches. Sections on current computer graphics practice show how
to apply given principles in common situations, such as how to
approximate an ideal solution on available hardware, or how to
represent a data structure more efficiently. Topics are reinforced
by exercises, program-ming problems, and hands-on projects. This
revised edition features
- New coverage of the rendering equation, GPU architecture
considerations, and importance- sampling in physically based
rendering
- An emphasis on modern approaches, as in a new chapter on
probability theory for use in Monte-Carlo rendering
- Implementations of GPU shaders, software rendering, and
graphics-intensive 3D interfaces
- 3D real-time graphics platforms-their design goals and
trade-offs-including new mobile and browser platforms
- Programming and debugging approaches unique to graphics
development
The text and hundreds of figures are presented in full color
throughout the book. Programs are written in C++, C#, WPF, or
pseudocode-whichever language is most effective for a given
example. Source code and figures from the book, testbed programs,
and additional content will be available from the authors' website
(cgpp.net) or the publisher's website
(informit.com/title/9780321399526). Instructor resources will be
available from the publisher. The wealth of information in this
book makes it the essential resource for anyone working in or
studying any aspect of computer graphics.
