This work deals with the real practicalities of getting results in
the Magistrates' Court. It looks at who's who at court, and who
holds what information, where forms are kept and how to fill them
in. This new edition contains practical guidance which until now
has been hard to find in other publications for example: how to get
bail; how to argue for separate representation; what you should be
looking for in disclosure; and a digest of jargon and shorthand
used by the police, CPS and court staff.
First published in 2003. Routledge is an imprint of Taylor &
Francis, an informa company.
Growing up in 1850s Alabama, Cooper Waterman longed to become a man
of letters - a lofty dream for a handicapped lad who was poor and
fatherless, and left school at 13 to become a shoeshine boy. But
with his imagination, a notebook and a stub of a pencil, he rose to
become a newspaper reporter, eventually going off to serve as a
Civil War correspondent. Covering an epic American struggle, Cooper
survives the siege of Vicksburg and rides through bloody cavalry
battles with the formidable General Nathan Bedford Forrest, taking
time along the way to write letters to home for hundreds of wounded
or illiterate soldiers. Compelling, ringing with authenticity and
told through the eyes of a southern journalist, The Letter Writer
is a Civil War story remarkably different than any you may have
ever read.
A teen-age girl is awakened in the wee hours of the morning to
serve as her father's getaway driver when he pulls a shotgun
robbery at a poker game. A woman bar owner in the French Quarter
shoots a drug-addled, would-be robber dead, then covers up the
incident with the help of the police. A small boy in Alabama loses
his innocence with the death of a goldfish. From the author of The
Letter Writer, the engaging Civil War novel, now comes this
poignant collection of short stories set along the Gulf Coast that
are at once humorous, touching and disturbing portraits of
working-class people, and blaze a new trail directly into the heart
of the American South.
Perhaps you are a beginning knitter and want to start by learning
the most efficient and effective fundamentals. Or, you may have
been knitting for a while, but you knit slowly and wish you could
knit faster. Have you ever wondered if you could increase your
speed AND your efficiency at the same time? What if there were a
book that could teach you in just a few weeks the fundamentals you
need to enjoy a lifetime of confidence and satisfaction in your
knitting skills? And what if that book used high quality
photographs and clear instructions to show you exactly what your
hand and finger positioning should be as you go through the steps
of a technique? Many knitters in the US and the UK have learned to
"throw" their yarn onto their needles with a lot more effort than
they need to, resulting in a consistently slower rate of knitting
and an inefficient use of the fingers and hands. Strangely enough,
this is a holdover from World War II, when the Continental knitting
method fell out of favor due to its association with Germany. The
Continental method is the most efficient and quickest way to knit,
yet many English language knitting books still teach the English or
American styles. A glance through many recent books and
instructional videos still reveals a widespread lack of knowledge
about the most efficient way to manipulate the yarn and needles
with your hands and fingers. This book was written to address that
gap in knowledge and is divided into six weekly lessons which start
with basic fundamentals, and end with intermediate level skills and
projects. Lucy W. DeFranco taught beginning knitting lessons for a
number of years, and elaborated and expanded upon the lesson plans
for those classes to create this book. Ms. DeFranco is an
accomplished weaver, fiber artist, and language teacher, and has
raised many different kinds of wool-bearing animals. She was also
one of the co-founders of The Web*sters, a knitter's and weaver's
supply store in Ashland, Oregon.
