Computational Conflict Research (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Emanuel Deutschmann, Jan Lorenz, Luis G. Nardin, Davide Natalini,... Computational Conflict Research (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Emanuel Deutschmann, Jan Lorenz, Luis G. Nardin, Davide Natalini, Adalbert F. X. Wilhelm
R1,670 Discovery Miles 16 700 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This open access book brings together a set of original studies that use cutting-edge computational methods to investigate conflict at various geographic scales and degrees of intensity and violence. Methodologically, this book covers a variety of computational approaches from text mining and machine learning to agent-based modelling and social network analysis. Empirical cases range from migration policy framing in North America and street protests in Iran to violence against civilians in Congo and food riots world-wide. Supplementary materials in the book include a comprehensive list of the datasets on conflict and dissent, as well as resources to online repositories where the annotated code and data of individual chapters can be found and where (agent-based) models can be re-produced and altered. These materials are a valuable resource for those wishing to retrace and learn from the analyses described in this volume and adapt and apply them to their own research interests. By bringing together novel research through an international team of scholars from a range of disciplines, Computational Conflict Research pioneers and maps this emerging field. The book will appeal to students, scholars, and anyone interested in the prospects of using computational social sciences to advance our understanding of conflict dynamics.

System[theoretical]ic Urban Development - The Potsdam Lodestar Approach (1st ed. 2023): Manfred Rolfes, Jan Lorenz Wilhelm System[theoretical]ic Urban Development - The Potsdam Lodestar Approach (1st ed. 2023)
Manfred Rolfes, Jan Lorenz Wilhelm
R2,648 Discovery Miles 26 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In their book, the authors introduce the topic of urban development from a systems (theoretical) perspective and provide explanatory approaches, tips and methodological instructions for dealing with urban complexity. Knowing full well that this sometimes amounts to squaring the circle, the authors draw on applied systemic approaches and systematically couple these with epistemological currents that can be assigned to Luhmann's systems theory. The social understanding of this theory of social systems represents a very good starting point for understanding urban development and urban complexity. From this perspective, urban development can be seen as a process in which organisations and individuals with their own expectations and perspectives are involved, in which contradictions and conflicts seem inevitable and the future cannot be clearly predicted. Decisions in cities and municipalities are therefore always associated with risks, irritations and unexpected consequences. With the Potsdam lodestar approach, Rolfes and Wilhelm present a multidimensional approach to managing urban development processes. The approach distinguishes five process dimensions, which are presented chapter by chapter and linked with recommendations. The individual chapters are structured along guiding questions and feature appealing visualizations and numerous bonus materials.
