This book highlights research that contributes to a better
understanding of emerging challenges in information systems (IS)
outsourcing. Important topics covered include: how to digitally
innovate through IS outsourcing; how to govern outsourced
digitalization projects; how to cope with complex multi-vendor and
micro-services arrangements; how to manage data sourcing and data
partnerships, including issues of cybersecurity; and how to cope
with the increasing demands of internationalization and new
sourcing models, such as crowdsourcing, cloud sourcing and robotic
process automation. These issues are approached from the client's
perspective, vendor's perspective, or both. Given its scope, the
book will be of interest to all researchers and students in the
fields of Information Systems, Management, and Organization, as
well as corporate executives and professionals seeking a more
profound analysis of the underlying factors and mechanisms of
outsourcing.
This book covers a broad range of topics related to digitalization.
Specifically, it views digitalization across different
organizational levels, such as the level of individuals, teams,
processes, firms, and ecosystems. It includes a collection of
recent research and reflections on the topic that helps to
understand the technological foundations of digitalization and its
impacts. It also reflects on the process of digitalization and how
it changes established ways of working, collaborating, and
coordinating. With this book, the editors and authors honor
Professor Dr. Armin Heinzl for his enormous and ongoing
contributions to information systems research, education, and
practice.

Outsourcing has been one of the most controversially discussed
topics in the infor- mation systems (IS) management field within
the last decade. While some organi- zations have been quick to
adopt outsourcing, others have been slow to consider this sourcing
option. Still others have evaluated outsourc ing but adopted
insourcing in- stead. In other words, organizations appear to
behave totally different in the sourc- ing of their IS tasks. There
are no generall y accepted practices, e.g., outsourcing certain
types ofIS services while keeping others in-house. The sourcing
decision ap- pears to be highly dependent on the specific situation
of each organization. Recognizing the unique context of each
organization, this book presents an empiri- cally tested model that
can be used to analyze the options of IS insourcing versus
outsourcing of every organization. The model takes into account the
unique IS re- quirements and the differences between insourcing and
outsourcing at both the in- dividual (i.e., worker) and the
organizational level.
