'Be of good comfort, Master Ridley, and play the man: we shall this day light such a candle by God's grace in England, as, I trust, shall never be put out.' Hugh Latimer's famous words of consolation to Nicholas Ridley as they are both about to be burnt alive for heresy come from John Foxe's magisterial Acts and Monuments, popularly known as the Book of Martyrs. This vast collection of unforgettable accounts of religious persecution exerted as great an influence on early modern England and New England as the Bible and the Book of Common Prayer. It contains many stirring stories of the apprehension, interrogation, imprisonment, and execution of alleged heretics. The narratives not only attest to the fortitude of individuals who suffered for their faith not many years before the birth of Shakespeare, but they also constitute exciting tales filled with graphic details and verbal wit. This modernized selection also includes some of the famous woodcuts that illustrated the original text, as well as providing a comprehensive introduction to Foxe's life and times and the martyrology narrative. Zoc (Nicolas Cage), the wizard ant, creates a formula that shrinks Lucas to the size of an insect, and the tiny boy is brought before the leader of the Ant Council and the Queen of the Colony (Meryl Streep) to answer for his crimes against the ants. "I picked up this book soon after making a commitment to Christ. At
first I was shocked by the images of Christians suffering and dying
for their faith. But soon I was drawn into the accounts of how
these ordinary men and women--no different from you or me--could
face every kind of opposition rather than deny their Lord. Reading
their stories marked me and helped me resolve to follow Christ no
matter what the cost."
John Fox s A Mathematical Primer for Social Statistics covers many often ignored yet important topics in mathematics and mathematical statistics. This text provides readers with the foundation on which an understanding of applied statistics rests.
- Covers matrices, linear algebra, and vector geometry
. Discusses basic differential and integral calculus
. Focuses on probability and statistical estimation
. Develops by way of illustration the seminal statistical method of linear least-squares regression
This book is ideal for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and researchers in the social sciences who need to understand and use relatively advanced statistical methods but whose mathematical preparation for this work is insufficient.

An R Companion to Applied Regression is a broad introduction to the R statistical computing environment in the context of applied regression analysis. John Fox and Sanford Weisberg provide a step-by-step guide to using the free statistical software R, an emphasis on integrating statistical computing in R with the practice of data analysis, coverage of generalized linear models, and substantial web-based support materials. The Third Edition has been reorganized and includes a new chapter on mixed-effects models, new and updated data sets, and a de-emphasis on statistical programming, while retaining a general introduction to basic R programming. The authors have substantially updated both the car and effects packages for R for this edition, introducing additional capabilities and making the software more consistent and easier to use. They also advocate an everyday data-analysis workflow that encourages reproducible research. To this end, they provide coverage of RStudio, an interactive development environment for R that allows readers to organize and document their work in a simple and intuitive fashion, and then easily share their results with others. Also included is coverage of R Markdown, showing how to create documents that mix R commands with explanatory text.

Fox's Book of Martyrs. A History of the Lives, Sufferings, and Triumphant Deaths of the Primitive Protestant Martyrs. by John Foxe. This work is strictly what its title page imports, a compilation. Fox's "Book of Martyrs" has been made the basis of this volume. Liberty, however, has been taken to abridge wherever it was thought necessary;-to alter the antiquated form of the phraseology; to introduce additional information; and to correct any inaccuracy respecting matters of fact, which had escaped the author of the original work, or which has been found erroneous by the investigation of modern research. The object of this work, is to give a brief history of persecution since the first introduction of christianity, till the present time. In doing this, we have commenced with the martyrdom of Stephen, and following the course of events, have brought the History of persecution down to the year 1830. In all ages, we find that a disposition to persecute for opinion's sake, has been manifested by wicked men, whatever may have been their opinions or sentiments on religious subjects. The intolerant jew, and the bigoted pagan, have exhibited no more of a persecuting spirit, than the nominal professor of christianity, and the infidel and the avowed atheist. Indeed, it seems to be an "inherent vice," in unsanctified nature to endeavour by the pressure of physical force, to restrain obnoxious sentiments, and to propagate favourite opinions. It is only when the heart has been renewed and sanctified by divine grace, that men have rightly understood and practised the true principles of toleration. We do not say that none but real christians have adopted correct views respecting civil and religious liberty;-but we affirm that these views owe their origin entirely to christianity and its genuine disciples. The Actes and Monuments, popularly known as Foxe's Book of Martyrs, is a work of Christian history and martyrology by John Foxe, first published in English in 1563 by John Day. It includes a polemical account of the sufferings of Protestants under the Catholic Church, with particular emphasis on England and Scotland. The book was highly influential in those countries, and helped shape lasting popular notions of Catholicism there. The book went through four editions in Foxe's lifetime and a number of later editions and abridgements, including some that specifically reduced the text to a Book of Martyrs.
This book provides a general introduction to the R Commander graphical user interface (GUI) to R for readers who are unfamiliar with R. It is suitable for use as a supplementary text in a basic or intermediate-level statistics course. It is not intended to replace a basic or other statistics text but rather to complement it, although it does promote sound statistical practice in the examples. The book should also be useful to individual casual or occasional users of R for whom the standard command-line interface is an obstacle. tinyurl.com/RcmdrBook The site includes data files used in the book and an errata list. http://socserv.mcmaster.ca/jfox/Books/RCommander/Writing-Rcmdr-Plugins.pdf Writing R Commander Plug-in Packages
The Alvis company of Coventry were motor and aero engineers who made some of the finest motor cars during the period 1920 to 1967, when car production stopped. There were no independent coachbuilders left and mass production was not for Alvis. Total production was a mere 21,250 and fewer than 7,000 after the Second World War. It is the post-war cars that this book focuses on. The successor to Alvis's iconic Fourteen, the Three Litre, had a production run of seventeen years and the newest is now nearly fifty years old. John Fox offers a fascinating look at both technical and historical aspects of Alvis cars during this period, utilising rare archival and modern photographs.
