To Romans of later generations the three decades between the
dictatorships of Sulla and of Caesar were the age of Pompey the
Great. In spite of the central role he played in Roman history, he
remains a shadowy figure compared with the likes of Caesar and
Cicero. Pompey the Great, first published in 1978, traces the
career of this enigmatic character from his first appearance in
public life on the staff of his father Strabo during the Social
War, through his early military campaigns as Sulla's lieutenant in
the Civil War 83-82, as the Senate's general in Italy and Spain
during the 70s, to his first consulship with Crassus in 70. The
important commands against the pirates and Mithridates, the
alliance with Caesar, its eventual collapse into civil war, and the
significance of Pompey's constitutional position for an
understanding of the later Augustan settlement war are all
discussed with clarity and insight.

In many countries, questions are being raised about the quality and
value of educational research, and whether educational practice can
ever draw upon research evidence as productively as in fields such
as medicine. This book explores the relationship between research
and practice in education, using the case of science education as
an example. It looks at the extent to which current practice could
be said to be informed by knowledge or ideas generated by research
- and at the extent to which the use of current practices or the
adoption of new ones are, or could be, supported by research
evidence - and so be said to be evidence-based. The issues
considered are not specific to science, but apply to the teaching
and learning of any curriculum subject.
The book draws on the findings of four inter-related research
studies, carried out by the Evidence-based Practice in Science
Education (EPSE) Research Network. It considers:
- how research might be used to establish greater consensus about
curriculum
- how research can inform the design of assessment tools and
teaching interventions
- teachers' and other science educators' perceptions of the
influence of research on their teaching practices and their
students' learning
- the extent to which evidence can show that an educational
practice "works."
The book is unique in exploring the issues raised by the current
debate about educational research within the context of the
teaching and learning of a specific curriculum subject. Rather than
looking at how research might inform educational practices in the
abstract, it looks at how research can lead to improvement in the
teaching of specific pieces of knowledge, or specificskills, that
we value. The issues it explores are therefore of direct interest
and relevance to educational practitioners and policy-makers.

There are always winners and losers in business. The winners are
those able to drive their business forward by consistently making
sales from new and existing customers. Winners undestand how to
scope their market potential effectively. Winners are able to
differentiate between hot prospects and time wasters. Winners can
differentiate their offer because they possess an ability to
empathise with the prospect's needs. Winners retain their customers
by providing solutions to their problems. And finally, winners have
an ability to break through the hurdles and challenges that selling
presents them. Even in the face of adversity they stay focused,
motivated and dedicated to the cause - securing the order!
"Pitch Perfect" will help readers utilize Strategem's vast

This book contains 18 reviewed papers originally presented at the
conference Practical Work in Science Education - the Face of
Science in Schools, held at the Royal Danish School of Educational
Studies in Copenhagen, in May 1998. Substantial literature about
practical work has been published during the last decade. This book
contains contributions by researchers from England, France,
Germany, Norway, Israel, Italy, Sweden and South Africa and adds
important aspects to a varied and balanced view of practical work.
Some of the papers are conceptual, addressing aims and rationales
for practical work from a theoretical and critical perspective.
Most papers, however, encounter recent empirical research.
Important aspects about the outcome of students' practice of
science both inside and outside the conventional laboratory are
addressed and make a substantial contribution to our understanding
of the effectiveness of practical work for conceptual learning and
the attainment of skills and processes normally associated with
science.

Author and Poet John L. Leach IV leaves an indelible impression
with an artistic literary expression throughout Poems of the Pen.
As the artist speaks through his paintings, so the poet speaks
through his writings. It does not matter what the poet writes with,
but what the poet writes. Author John L. Leach IV seeks to
creatively bring poetry to the realm of deeper meaning and better
understanding as you collect your thoughts and thoughtfully
consider words and their meanings with each stroke of the pen
throughout Poems of the Pen. So many thoughts, ideas, and dreams
flow from an academic stream as the author wrestles with life's
mysteries and asks sobering questions through the use of poetry.
This romantic adventure begins at O'Hare airport when our hero
falls for a beautiful brunette. They soon discover common ground to
carry on a motivating conversation. But it isn't long before they
are alone and struggling to survive. The next six months will grant
them a long awaited romance that they thought was never going to
happen. They must depend on one-another for their very survival,
and if things go as planned they could be back in Chicago by
spring. But unfortunately things seldom go as planned.
The story tells of the dangers of wishing that things were of a
simpler time. After a near death accident our hero is rendered
comatose, but shares a division of his unconsciousness with another
time and place. What he believes to be reality is anything but. The
joy of love; brings pain and sorrow that he must overcome. And then
the endless toil of being a yeoman must be endured on the way back
to his true reality. The question is will he ever get there?
The search for creativity is no easy path to journey as one travels
upon the path of the unknown, and even the poet faces difficulties
in life by experiencing the trials and tribulations of striving to
survive. The myriad of obstacles discovered upon one's path as they
travel through the shadow of the valley, whether they travel by day
or by night, threatens to hinder one's destination. As one reads
through these pages the reader will discover the highs and lows
experienced by the poet, who seeks the desired destination of peace
and contentment. Not knowing what the raging storm will bring after
spending too much time in a dry and barren place, the poet
unsheathes a weapon of words with various streams of thought. For
poetry speaks to poetry as the poet speaks to the poet, and by one
stroke of the pen to the next, it is through the use of the pen the
poet lives on.
