Endocrine Disrupters in Wastewater and Sludge Treatment Processes (Paperback): Jason W. Birkett, John N. Lester Endocrine Disrupters in Wastewater and Sludge Treatment Processes (Paperback)
Jason W. Birkett, John N. Lester
R2,055 Discovery Miles 20 550 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) have been shown to produce changes in the endocrine system of organisms, leading to increases in cancers and abnormalities in reproductive structure and function. This book presents research on the endocrine-disrupting effects of sewage and industrial effluents, covering the sources, fate, and transport of EDCs, and sludge treatment and disposal options considered in regard to their implications for receiving environments. It also addresses the potential sources and analysis of these substances in waters, sediments, and sludges. In addition, the authors review current legislation and potential management strategies for endocrine disrupters in the environment.

Anaerobic Digestion Processes in Industrial Wastewater Treatment (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1986):... Anaerobic Digestion Processes in Industrial Wastewater Treatment (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1986)

There have been many significant microbiological, biochemical and technological advances made in the understanding and implementation of anaerobic digestion processes with respect to industrial and domestic wastewater treatment. Elucida tion of the mechanisms of anaerobic degradation has permitted a greater control over the biological parameters of waste conversion and the technical advances achieved have reduced the time and land area requirements and increased the cost-effectiveness and efficiency of the various processes presently in use. By product recovery in the form of utilisable methane gas has become increasingly feasible, while the development of new and superior anaerobic reactor designs with increased tolerance to toxic and shock loadings of concentrated effiuents has established a potential for treating many extremely recalcitrant industrial wastestreams. The major anaerobic bioreactor systems and their applications and limitations are examined here, together with microbiological and biochemical aspects of anaerobic wastewater treatment processes.
