This book will inspire academics, teachers and trainers to use film
and television in their classrooms and to shows them how it might
be done. It brings together respected international scholars who
recount their experiences of how they have used moving images in
their classrooms (defined widely to include distance-learning) with
their explanations of why they chose this method of teaching and
how they put their intentions into action. The book also
illustrates how particular subjects might be taught using film and
television as an inspiration to demonstrate the range of
opportunities that these media offer. Finally, this book considers
some of the practical issues in using film and television in the
classroom such as copyright, technology, and the representation of
reality and drama in films. This is a 'practical, how to' book that
answers the questions of those people who have considered using
film and television in their classroom but until now have shied
away from doing so. The opportunity to see how others have used
film effectively breaks down psychological barriers and makes it
seem both realistic and worthwhile.

ASA theory is one of the most important explanations of behaviour
in organisations. Developed by Professor Ben Schneider, it is the
idea that organisations contain similar types of people because
they attract, select and retain people similar to those already
employed by the organisation. This homogeneity explains why
organisations are different to each other. Although a lot is known
about attrition, little is known about the attraction and selection
phases. This book contains a series of empirical studies that
explore whether organisations attract and select people who hold
the values of the people already employed by the organisation. The
results of these studies cast doubt on how universal ASA theory
might be and suggest that the initial employment decisions that
people make are more about choosing their vocation than their
employer.
The Second Edition of this highly successful course reader provides
a comprehensive, contemporary and critical review of the key issues
in strategic human resource management. The book draws upon the
work of some of the most influential and insightful writers on the
subject of the strategic management of people in organizations.
Through a series of carefully edited articles, students can explore
current thinking on topics as diverse as performance, pay, process
reengineering, structure, ethics, culture, change and leadership.
This volume moves beyond strategic human resource management from
the perspective of the policy setter. The book informs but also
questions and, while recognising the legitimacy and importance of
management perspectives, also captures the experience of workers on
the receiving end of strategic initiatives. Students will be
encouraged to consider core issues and difficult questions, such
as: " How should employees respond to the missionary zeal of their
employers? " How can we explain the increasing influence of
gangmasters? " What are the effects of management training on the
identities of managers? " Has strategic HRM been transformed from a
model of commitment to one of exploitation? Strategic Human
Resource Management has been designed to meet the needs of course
teaching at advanced undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It is
an invaluable text that will help define the complex agenda of
human resource management, strategy and organisations for students.
Lively and thought-provoking, The Effective Manager provides a comprehensive introduction to management and organizational behavior. This timely reader brings together some of the most interesting and accessible pieces written on the art and science of management, deliberately counterpoising them to highlight alternative perspectives, in a world where there is seldom one right answer to the many complex questions and problems we face. Six sections explore important aspects of a manager's job focusing on innovative ideas and theories that a manger can use to become more effective: Management, leadership, and conflict Motivation and stress at work Organizational culture Decision making and teams Staff development Diversity in organizations This volume will serve as an excellent introductory text for undergraduate or MBA courses in general management, organizational behavior, and human resource management.
