Transoceanic Perspectives in Amitav Ghosh's Ibis Trilogy studies
Ghosh's Sea of Poppies (2008), River of Smoke (2011) and Flood of
Fire (2015) in relation to maritime criticism. Juan-Jose
Martin-Gonzalez draws upon the intersections between maritime
criticism and postcolonial thought to provide, via an analysis of
the Ibis trilogy, alternative insights into nationalism(s),
cosmopolitanism and globalization. He shows that the Victorian age
in its transoceanic dimension can be read as an era of
proto-globalization that facilitates a materialist critique of the
inequities of contemporary global neo-liberalism. The book argues
that in order to maintain its critical sharpness, postcolonialism
must re-direct its focus towards today's most obvious legacy of
nineteenth-century imperialism: capitalist globalization. Tracing
the migrating characters who engage in transoceanic crossings
through Victorian sea lanes in the Ibis trilogy, Martin-Gonzalez
explores how these dispossessed collectives made sense of their
identities in the Victorian waterworlds and illustrates the
political possibilities provided by the sea crossing and its fluid
boundaries.
Many systems of logic diagrams have been offered both historically
and more recently. Each of them has clear limitations. An original
alternative system is offered here. It is simpler, more natural,
and more expressively and inferentially powerful. It can be used to
analyze not only syllogisms but arguments involving relational
terms and unanalyzed statement terms.
This book details aluminum alloys with special focus on the
aluminum silicon (Al-Si) systems - that are the most abundant
alloys second only to steel. The authors include a description of
the manufacturing principles, thermodynamics, and other main
characteristics of Al-Si alloys. Principles of processing, testing,
and in particular applications in the Automotive, Aeronautical and
Aerospace fields are addressed.
In Covid-19 and the Transformation of American Society, the first
book-length consideration of the Covid-19 pandemic's implications,
noted sociologist Jose Martinez lays bare the immense social
changes that we should expect from the nouvel coronavirus, which
has upended American life since March 2020. A vital theme of his
critique is how inequality already entrenched in American society
may worsen due to large-scale economic disruption that resonates
strongly in the socioeconomic circumstances of minorities and the
poor. On the other hand, society may also experience constructive
social changes resulting from a widespread reconsideration of
consumerism driven by frank reassessments of our wants and needs.
This book addresses how the coronavirus has contributed to
long-lasting reconsiderations of social relationships, from dating
to leisure to education, in both negative and positive ways, and
how national and cultural politics will never be the same.
Martinez's timely book opens a new field in foretelling an
unanticipated future for American society and, indeed, the entire
world. It concludes with a consideration of possible solutions to
address social changes that we are unlikely to avoid.

Dynamic Cartography analyses the works of Rudolf Laban, Lawrence
Halprin, Anne Bogart, Adolphe Appia, Cedric Price, Joan Littlewood,
and Helio Oiticica. They are practitioners who have worked on
different areas of enquiry from the existing relations between body
and space through movement, events, or actions but whose work has
never been presented from this perspective or in this context. The
work and methodologies set up by these practitioners enable us to
develop a practice-based exploration. Some of the experiments in
the book - Micro-actions I and II - explore the presence of the
body in the space. In Kinetography I and II, Laban's dance notation
system - kinetography - is used to create these dynamic
cartographies. Kinetography III proposes the analysis of an urban
public space through the transcription of the body movement
contained on it. The series Dynamic Cartographies I, II, and III
analyses movement in geometrically controlled spaces through the
Viewpoints techniques by Anne Bogart. Finally, Wooosh! and Trellick
Tales present two projects in which performance is applied in order
to analyse and understand urban and architectural space.

This volume affords an opportunity to reconsider international
connections and conflicts from the specific standpoint of
translation as a dynamic, sociocultural activity, carried out and
influenced by numerous stakeholders. The various chapters contained
in this volume survey a wide range of languages and cultures, and
they all pivot around the relationships that can be established
between translation and ideology, re-narration, identity, cultural
representation and knowledge reproduction. The ultimate aim is to
shed light on the actual act of translating in which the self is
well-presented and beautified and the other is deformed and made
ugly. In this volume, due consideration is given to the main frames
(be they characterization, interpretive or identity frames) as well
as to the nonverbal factors that play a fundamental role in forming
the final shape of the translated product.
Chilean Patagonia, located at the southwestern tip of South
America, is one of the last regions on earth where highly intact
environments predominate. With a coastline that extends along some
100,000 km of fjords, channels, and islands, it has one of the
world´s most extensive marine-terrestrial interfaces. Local
place-based and Indigenous cultures and management practices are a
vital presence across the region, while the long and rich history
of conservation efforts have resulted in officially protected areas
covering over 50% of the land and 41% of the coastal-marine area.
However, Chilean Patagonia is increasingly facing anthropogenic
pressures associated with increased infrastructure and access,
salmon aquaculture, extractive industries, and the spread of
invasive exotic species. Despite widespread recognition that
Chilean Patagonia represents a unique global reservoir of
socio-natural heritage, to date there has been no region-wide
assessment of the scientific evidence of the conservation status of
its ecosystems or the priorities for their effective conservation.
Conservation in Chilean Patagonia: Assessing the state of
knowledge, opportunities, and challenges is the first book to
gather and synthesize the available scientific and
socio-environmental information related to Patagonian conservation.
It presents the collaborative work of 68 researchers and local
experts, representing a range of specialties and perspectives,
including: biology, ecology, socio-ecology, fisheries, aquaculture,
anthropology, economics, geography, tourism, cryosphere,
oceanography, climate and global change. The book’s 18 chapters
focus on the status of key ecosystems and conservation tools, and
provide recommendations toward the construction of a renewed,
inclusive, and integrated conservation agenda for the Chilean
Patagonian region. It provides an essential primer for anyone
interested in the future of this ecologically vital region, as well
as lessons on interdisciplinary collaboration and integrated
analysis of conservation issues useful for conservation
practitioners and scholars. This is an open access book.
Large-scale social changes are taking place in American society,
often even without technological change. America's Future examines
these transformations. An introduction lays the groundwork for five
of the most significant areas where social changes are occurring:
population, politics, education, economics, and media. An
underlying theme emphasizes what is specifically driving these
changes. There are reasons why what is transpiring today is very
different than before and what such portends for the future. Our
lives are notably changing, though most are unaware how.
Football effects the lives of many in substantial ways. This book
first addresses the notion that this is "merely entertainment." The
significance of why football emerged atypically in Texas is
discussed as well as what this portends for American society.
Unsurprisingly, Texan disparities in income and racial segregation
dissolved in the mirage that all people are equal at game time as
spectators. Major institutions such as the military additionally
mesh with the ethos of pro football in various ways. The marked
regional rivalries of the Dallas Cowboys are emblematic in a
society of other polarizations, including political, racial, and
gender conflicts. What is needed are substantive and constructive
approaches to societal problems instead of ongoing destructive
palliatives.
This book addresses methods used in the synthesis of light alloys
and composites for industrial applications. It begins with a broad
introduction to virtually all aspects of the technology of light
alloys and composite materials for aircraft and aerospace
applications. The basic theory of fiber and particle
reinforcements; light metallic material characteristics and
composite systems; components forms, and manufacturing techniques
and processes are discussed. The book then progresses to describe
the production of alloys and composites by unconventional
techniques, such as powder metallurgy, sandwich technique, severe
plastic deformation, additive manufacturing, and thermal spray,
making it appropriate for researchers in both academia and
industry. It will be of special interest to aerospace engineers.
Provides a broad introduction to the technology used in
manufacturing light alloys and composite materials; Describes the
current technologies employed in synthesizing light alloys made
from advanced materials; Focuses on unconventional techniques used
to produce light alloys and composites in aerospace applications.

Recent and ongoing issues at all levels of American education are
at the forefront of public discussion and political debate.
Explored by seasoned sociologist and education researcher Jose
Martinez, the issues involved include segregation, tracking,
discipline, charter schools, various types of higher education,
online education, and faculty matters, among others. This
insightful and timely book presents trenchant analyses of the
problems arising from these issues and offers some solutions.
Included are coherent theoretical considerations as they pertain to
education. Extensive empirical explorations illuminate the issues
as well. A narrative format is used for readability without tables
and charts to facilitate the flow of the material. This study is
comprehensive in scope and engages with many facets of inequality,
all of which command great interest and concern at all levels of
American society. This analysis of inequality in education is
clearly significant to everyone concerned, and will remain so for
the foreseeable future. Unlike more limited studies, Martinez
focuses not merely on one aspect of education, but uniquely
embraces the totality of education regarding the two-tiered
entrenchment of inequality in various areas across all levels of
the educational experience in America today.

These proceedings from the Xth Congress of the European Society for
Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery in Stockholm reflect the
growing interest in these fields of neurosurgery. It is the most
extensive volume in this series of publications and it contains a
large number of original articles pertaining to the most recent
advances in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery. Not long ago
stereotactic neurosurgery was considered an esoteric sub speciality
practised only by those involved in treating movement disorders and
pain. In the last decade we have witnessed the incorporation of
stereotactic methodology in the management of common neurosurgical
diseases, and the stereotactic technique is now practised in all
major neurosurgical centers. As with other surgical techniques and
tools, however, the utilization of stereotactic methods requires
special knowledge and training. This book comprises articles which
give insight into new stereotactic applications and technology. For
example, the usage of stereotaxis without a frame and the so-called
navigator systems in open tumor surgery is dealt with in two
papers. The introduction and development of radiosurgery is closely
linked to the advancement of stereotactic technique. Radiosurgical
treatment of tumors and cerebrovascular diseases has been one of
major achievements in modern neurosurgery. This publication
contains several original reports illustrating the efficacy of
radiosurgery in problematic neurosurgical diseases.
In Diversity, Funding, and Standardized Testing in American
Education, noted education expert Jose Martinez's examines current
aspects of inequality in American education, examining the complex
nexus of funding, diversity, and the increasingly contentious role
of standardized testing. A readable narrative format assesses the
extensive documentation, which demonstrates that inequality is
becoming entrenched throughout the education system, in no small
measure due to biases in standardized testing systems. Students
from kindergarten through university face the arising challenges
while their environments are becoming more diverse. Funding levels
in education are also posited as causes of inequality. This
complements the view that standardized testing at all levels of
education mirrors and exacerbates entrenched economic inequality.
Education funding and standardized testing at all levels have thus
become basic mechanisms that purposefully reproduce and maintain a
two-tiered society. The solutions are not difficult to discern, as
other societies can attest, but Martinez's thought-provoking new
book moves toward engaging them.
