This essay collection celebrates the richness of Christian musical
tradition across its two thousand year history and across the
globe. Opening with a consideration of the fourth-century
lamp-lighting hymn Phos hilaron and closing with reflections on
contemporary efforts of Ghanaian composers to create Christian
worship music in African idioms, the ten contributors engage with a
broad ecumenical array of sacred music. Topics encompass Roman
Catholic sacred music in medieval and Renaissance Europe, German
Lutheran song in the eighteenth century, English hymnody in
colonial America, Methodist hymnody adopted by Southern Baptists in
the nineteenth century, and Genevan psalmody adapted to respond to
the post-war tribulations of the Hungarian Reformed Church. The
scope of the volume is further diversified by the inclusion of
contemporary Christian topics that address the evangelical methods
of a unique Orthodox Christian composer's language, the shared aims
and methods of African-American preaching and gospel music, and the
affective didactic power of American evangelical "praise and
worship" music. New material on several key composers, including
Jacob Obrecht, J.S. Bach, George Philipp Telemann, C.P.E. Bach,
Zoltan Kodaly, and Arvo Part, appears within the book. Taken
together, these essays embrace a stimulating variety of
interdisciplinary analytical and methodological approaches, drawing
on cultural, literary critical, theological, ritual,
ethnographical, and media studies. The collection contributes to
discussions of spirituality in music and, in particular, to the
unifying aspects of Christian sacred music across time, space, and
faith traditions. This collection celebrates the fifteenth
anniversary of the Society for Christian Scholarship in Music.
Mobile devices have become an essential item in the daily lives of
many people. As with any innovation, mobile services present both
opportunities and challenges to current business models. The
development of mobile communication coupled with evolving mobile
services have completely changed the business landscape and have
transformed consumer behavior. It is important to understand the
impact that these services have on users' lives, business, and
society. Impact of Mobile Services on Business Development and
E-Commerce is a collection of innovative research that focuses on
the importance of mobile services in business development and
discusses the provision of decentralized services, mobile commerce
and marketing, and new models for the delivery of mobile services
such as business-to-consumer and peer-to-peer. While highlighting
topics including global market, consumer behavior, and customer
satisfaction, this book is ideally designed for business managers,
executives, marketers, entrepreneurs, financial advisors, consumer
behavior analysts, computer engineers, software developers, IT
specialists, students, researchers, and business professionals.
Differential argument marking has been a hot topic in linguistics
for several decades, both because it is cross-linguistically
widespread and because it raises essential questions at multiple
levels of grammar, including the relationship between abstract
processes and overt morphological marking, between case and
agreement, and between syntax and information structure. This
volume provides an introduction into the current state of the art
of research on differential case marking and chapters by leading
linguists addressing theoretical questions in a wide range of
typologically and geographically diverse languages from the
Indo-European, Sinitic, Turkic, and Uralic families. The chapters
engage with current theoretical issues in the morphology, syntax,
semantics, and processing of differential argument marking. A
central issue addressed by all the authors is the adequacy of
various theoretical approaches in modelling (different varieties
of) differential case marking, such as those determined by
topicality, those driven by cumulative factors, and those that
involve double marking. The volume will be of interest to students
and researchers working on cross-linguistic variation in
differential marking and its theoretical modelling.
Social quality thinking emerged from a critique of one-sided
policies by breaking through the limitations previously set by
purely economistic paradigms. By tracing its expansion and
presenting different aspects of social quality theory, this volume
provides an overview of a more nuanced approach, which assesses
societal progress and introduces proposals that are relevant for
policy making. Crucially, important components emerge with research
by scholars from Asia, particularly China, eastern Europe, and
other regions beyond western Europe, the theory's place of origin.
As this volume shows, this rich diversity of approaches and their
cross-national comparisons reveal the increasingly important role
of social quality theory for informing political debates on
development and sustainability.
At a time when human rights are coming under increasing pressure,
in-depth knowledge and understanding of their foundations,
conceptual underpinnings and current practice remain crucial. The
second edition of Walter Kalin and Joerg Kunzli's authoritative
book provides a concise but comprehensive legal analysis of
international human rights protection at the global and regional
levels. It shows that human rights are real rights creating legal
entitlements for those who are protected by them and imposing legal
obligations on those bound by them. Based, in particular, on a
wide-ranging analysis of international case-law, the book focuses
on the sources and scope of application of human rights and a
discussion of their substantive guarantees. Further chapters
describe the different mechanisms to monitor the implementation of
human rights obligations, ranging from the regional human rights
courts in Africa, the Americas and Europe and the UN treaty bodies
to the international criminal tribunals, the International Court of
Justice and the UN Security Council. The book is based on an
understanding of human rights as legal concepts that address basic
human needs and vulnerabilities, and highlights the indivisibility
of civil and political rights on the one and economic, social and
cultural rights on the other hand. It also highlights the
convergence of international human rights and international
humanitarian law and the interlinkages with international criminal
law as well as general international law, in particular the law of
state responsibility.
This book contemplates creativity education within the context of
the neoliberal capitalist economy. In the current crisis of
creativity, where we are required to be creative in an environment
of entrepreneurialisation, the author analyses what creativity has
become and what has been lost in various recent transitional
periods. Calling for recommitment towards the politics of critical
creativity for the public good, the author argues for an education
that resists the ideologies of neoliberalism so that creativity may
still be harnessed to rethink society. Inciting readers to conceive
of alternate forms of creativity and associated education, this
innovative book will appeal to educators, practitioners, creators
and learners searching for inspiration beyond creative destruction.
What constitutes a resource, and how do people make claims on them?
In the context of a burgeoning discourse of property, these are
vital questions. Rationales of Ownership offers conceptual
clarification in the context of material, intellectual and cultural
resources in Papua New Guinea. The volume is a result of a major
research project headed by Marilyn Strathern and Eric Hirsch, and
brings together contributions from social anthropology and law. The
approaches demonstrated, and conclusions reached, build upon recent
understandings developed within Melanesian anthropology, but have
far wider significance. The first publication sold out in Papua New
Guinea due to the relevance of its approach and contents to lawyers
and policy makers in that country. It is here made available to a
wider readership, particularly those teaching courses on resource
development, cultural and intellectual property, contemporary
Pacific societies, environmental degradation, and property itself.
ADVANCE PRAISE '...a unique contribution to the discipline's voice
in contemporary global debates...this volume represents the best of
the comparative, ethnographic tradition providing critical insight
into difference and similarity on issues that entangle us all in
various degrees of responsibility and care. It will be read by
anthropologists, policy makers and all academic and non-academic
students of what has come to be seen as the test area of the
survival of cultural difference.' Marta Roahtynskyj, University of
Guelph Lawrence Kalinoe is Professor and Executive Dean in the
School of Law, University of Papua New Guinea. James Leach is
Research Fellow, King's College and Associate Lecturer, Department
of Social Anthropology, University of Cambridge.
An in-depth study of the Bulgarian harmonic system is long overdue.
More than two decades since the Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares choir
was awarded a Grammy (1990), there is no scholarly study of the
captivating sounds of Bulgarian vertical sonorities. Kalin Kirilov
traces the gradual formation of a unique harmonic system that
developed in three styles of Bulgarian music: village music from
the 1930s to the 1990s, wedding music from the 1970s to 2000, and
choral arrangements (obrabotki) - creations of the socialist period
(1944-1989), popularized by Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares. Kirilov
classifies the different approaches to harmony and situates them in
their historical and cultural contexts, establishing new systems
for analysis. In the process, he introduces a new system for the
categorization of scales. Kirilov argues that the ready-made
concepts that are frequently forced onto Bulgarian music -
'westernization', 'socialist' or 'Middle Eastern influence', are
not only outdated but also too vague to be of use in understanding
the sophisticated modal and harmonic systems found in Bulgarian
music. As an insider who has performed, composed and arranged this
music for 30 years, Kirilov is uniquely qualified to interpret it
for an international audience.

This concise overview of the career of one of the modern masters of world cinema defines Ingmar Bergman's conception of the human condition as a struggle to find meaning in life as it is played out. After examining six existential themes explored repeatedly in Bergman's films--judgment, abandonment, suffering, shame, a visionary picture, and a turning toward or away from others--Jesse Kalin shows how these themes are expressed in eight of his films, including well known favorites such as Wild Strawberries, The Seventh Seal, Smiles of a Summer Night, and Fanny and Alexander. Other important but lesser known films covered include Naked Night, Shame, Cries and Whispers, and Scenes from a Marriage.
This book theoretically analyses the characteristics of (partner)
collaboration and the relationship between the school and the
community, emphasising the joint efforts they undertake to further
the child's development and learning. The diversity of experiences
that such cooperation offers benefits all partners. The second
aspect presented in the book pertains to the findings of a
quantitative and qualitative empirical research study on
cooperation between primary schools and various partners in the
community. Our research findings indicate a variety of intertwined
forms of cooperation between the school, school counsellors,
parents, individuals and institutions in the community. Examples of
good practice suggest that it is possible to establish quality
cooperation in many different ways.

Learn how to program in modern C, from the basics through the
advanced topics required for proficiency. This book is the fastest
path to C fluency for anyone experienced in a general-purpose
programming language. From start to finish, code examples highlight
the idioms and best practices behind efficient, robust programs in
a variety of areas. The book opens with a thorough coverage of
syntax, built-in data types and operations, and program structure.
C has quirks and presents challenges, which are covered in detail.
The coverage of advanced features is what sets this book apart from
others. Among the advanced topics covered are floating-point
representation in the IEEE 754 standard; embedded assembly language
in C code for overflow detection; regular expressions, assertions,
and internationalization; WebAssembly through C; and software
libraries for C and other clients. Memory efficiency and safety are
the two major challenges in C programming, and you'll explore these
challenges through a series of C examples. Arrays and structures,
which are the means to high-level data representation, are covered
in connection with pointers, which provide efficiency. The book
again uses code examples in covering networking and wire-level
security; concurrency (multiprocessing and multithreading);
instruction-level parallelism; and interprocess communication
through shared memory and files, pipes, message queues, and
signals. Many books introduce C, but few also explain how to use it
properly and optimally. Essential C does just that. What You'll
