Designed for use in the interdisciplinary courses on product
development as well as by practicing professionals, Product Design
and Development 7e strikes a balanced approach between theory and
practice through the authors' emphasis on methods.
What new products or services should you launch next year? How can
you improve the productivity of a paint line? What should you name
your new venture? How can you decrease patient waiting times? How
can you improve the customer experience? Pretty much any creative
problem-solving task can be framed as seeking a new match between
solution and need, from operational process improvements to
creating strategies to foster organic growth. Innovation
tournaments aim to find a match that is not just good, but
exceptional. Leveraging more than two decades of experience
organizing innovation tournaments in Silicon Valley and on Wall
Street, from Buenos Aires to Kuwait City, Shanghai to Moscow, and
with many Fortune 500 companies, two renowned researchers,
entrepreneurs, and the foremost experts on innovation tournaments
offer a template that you can use to generate winning ideas that
will drive great outcomes—whatever your challenges, whatever your
business. In The Innovation Tournament Handbook: A Step-by-Step
Guide to Finding Exceptional Solutions to Any Challenge, Wharton
professors Christian Terwiesch and Karl T. Ulrich offer an
engaging, often humorous, and always actionable guide to help you
learn: --How to frame and articulate your specific innovation
challenge --How to decide on the right format, structure, and
strategic direction for your own innovation tournament --How to
maximize the quality of the opportunities that will compete --How
to select the very best ideas --How to develop those ideas into
real-world opportunities --How to use tournaments to foster a
culture of innovation Fast-reading and filled with real-world
successes, The Innovation Tournament Handbook is a comprehensive
roadmap to finding a new match between a solution and a need that
is not merely good, but exceptional.
Serving as both a student textbook and a professional
reference/handbook, this volume explores the statistical methods of
examining time intervals between successive state transitions or
events. Examples include: survival rates of patients in medical
studies, unemployment periods in economic studies, or the period of
time it takes a criminal to break the law after his release in a
criminological study. The authors illustrate the entire research
path required in the application of event-history analysis, from
the initial problems of recording event-oriented data to the
specific questions of data organization, to the concrete
application of available program packages and the interpretation of
the obtained results. Event History Analysis: * makes didactically
accessible the inclusion of covariates in semi-parametric and
parametric regression models based upon concrete examples *
presents the unabbreviated close relationship underlying
statistical theory * details parameter-free methods of analysis of
event-history data and the possibilities of their graphical
presentation * discusses specific problems of multi-state and
multi-episode models * introduces time-varying covariates and the
question of unobserved population heterogeneity * demonstrates,
through examples, how to implement hypotheses tests and how to
choose the right model.

This book presents the results of an extensive study of old age and aging, ranging from 70 to 100 years, that was carried out by psychologists, sociologists, physicians, and scientists from a variety of other disciplines. A random sample of more than 500 senior residents of the former West Berlin were examined in depth. Topics investigated include intellectual abilities, self and personality, social relationships, physical health, medical treatment and care, mental disorders such as depression and dementia, socioeconomic conditions, everyday competence, subjective well-being, and gender differences.

If Amazon can't win in China, can anyone? When Amazon CEO Jeff
Bezos visited China in 2007, he expected that one day soon China
would be a double-digit percentage of Amazon's sales. Yet, by 2019,
Amazon, the most powerful and successful ecommerce company in the
world, had quit China. In Winning in China: 8 Stories of Success
and Failure in the World's Largest Economy, Wharton experts Lele
Sang and Karl Ulrich explore the success and failure of several
well-known companies, including Hyundai, LinkedIn, Sequoia Capital,
and InMobi, as more and more businesses look to reap profits from
the demand of 1.4 billion people. Sang, Global Fellow at the
Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and Ulrich, Vice
Dean of Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the Wharton School,
answer four critical questions: Which factors explain the success
(or failure) of foreign companies entering China? What challenges
and pitfalls can a company entering China expect to encounter? How
can a prospective entrant realistically assess its chances? Which
managerial decisions are critical, and which approaches are most
effective? Sang and Ulrich answer these questions by examining the
stories of eight well-known and respected companies that have
entered China. They study: How Norwegian Cruise Line's entry into
China displays how cultural differences can boost or sink different
companies; How Intel, one of the oldest, most respected firms in
Silicon Valley, thrived in a country that seems to favor agile
upstarts; How Zegna, the Italian luxury brand, has emerged as
another surprising success story and how it plans to navigate new
headwinds from the COVID-19 pandemic.Through these engaging and
illuminating stories, Sang and Ulrich offer a framework and path
for organizations looking for a way to successfully enter the
world's largest economy. History can be a teacher, and China, a
country with 3,500 years of written history, has much to teach.
Managers, entrepreneurs, and venture capitalists all seek to
maximize the financial returns from innovation, and profits are
driven largely by the quality of the opportunities they pursue.
Based on a structured and process-driven approach this book
demonstrates how to systematically identify exceptional
opportunities for innovation. An innovation tournament, just like
its counterpart in sports, starts with a large number of
candidates, with opportunities as the players. These opportunities
are pitted against each other until only the exceptional survive.
This book provides a principled approach for the effective
management of innovation tournaments - identifying a wealth of
promising opportunities and then evaluating and filtering them
intelligently for greatest profitability. With a set of practical
tools for creating and identifying new opportunities, it guides the
reader in evaluating and screening opportunities. The book
demonstrates how to construct an innovation portfolio and how to
align the innovation process with an organization's competitive
strategy. Innovation Tournaments employs quirky, fresh examples
ranging from movies to medical devices. The authors' tool kit is
built on their extensive research, their entrepreneurial
backgrounds, and their teaching and consulting work with many
highly innovative organizations.
The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 was the beginning of one of the
most interesting natural experiments in recent history. The East
German transition from a Communist state to part of the Federal
Republic of Germany abruptly created a new social order as old
institutions were abolished and new counterparts imported. This
unique situation provides an exceptional opportunity to examine the
central tenets of life course sociology. The empirical chapters of
this book draw a comprehensive picture of life course
transformation, demonstrating how the combination of life course
dynamics coupled with an extraordinary pace of system change affect
individual lives. How much turbulence was created by the transition
and how much stability was preserved? How did the qualifications
and resources acquired before 1989 influence the fortunes in the
restructured economy? How did the privatization and reorganization
of firms impact individuals? Did the transformation experiences
differ by age/cohort and gender? How stable were social networks at
work and in the family? Were personality characteristics important
mediators of post-1989 success or failure or were they rather
changed by them? How specific were the East German life
trajectories in comparison with Poland and West-Germany?

wirtschaftliche Situation, uber Alltagskompetenz, subjektives
zwei Jahrgangen. Es werden aktuelle Forschungsergebnisse aus dem
Max-Planck-Institut fur Bildungsforschung vorgestellt.
In welchem Sinn
haben allgemeine Theorieentwicklungen die Diagnosefahigkeit der
Soziologie entfaltet oder behindert? Wie erfolgreich waren
Diagnosen langerfristiger Entwicklungen in der Vergangenheit? In
welchem Verhaltnis stehen die Entwicklung von empirischen
Beschreibungs- und methodischen Analysepotentialen zur
Diagnosefahigkeit? Welche methodischen Mittel fordern und welche
methodischen Probleme behindern die Diagnosefahigkeit der
Soziologie?
September/I.
Oktober 1994 als Tagung der Sektion "Soziale Ungleichheit und
Sozialstrukturanaly se" der Deutschen Gesellschaft fUr Soziologie
in Berlin veranstaltet haben. Fast aIle der dort vorgetragenen
Referate konnten wir fUr diese Publikation gewinnen. Zusatzlich
" ... the end of all our exploring Will be to arrive where we
started And know the place for the first time. " (T. S. Eliot
"Little Gidding: Four Quartets") Die vorliegende Arbeit Uber die
nicht promovierten Mitarbeitern in autonomer Weise unternom- men
