Le Corbusier (Paperback, Second edition): Kenneth Frampton Le Corbusier (Paperback, Second edition)
Kenneth Frampton
R471 Discovery Miles 4 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A revised and updated edition of a bestselling introduction on one of the leading architects of the 20th century. Le Corbusier is probably the most famous architect of the 20th century. The richness and variety of his work and his passionately expressed philosophy of architecture have had a gigantic impact on the urban fabric and the way we live. Weaving through his long and prolific life are certain recurrent themes – his perennial drive towards new types of dwelling, from the early white villas to the Unité d’Habitation at Marseilles; his evolving concepts of urban form, including the Plan Voisin of 1925 with its cruciform towers imposed on the city of Paris and his work at Chandigarh in India; and his belief in a new technocratic order. The distinguished critic and architecture historian Kenneth Frampton re-examines all the facets of his artistic and philosophical world-view in light of recent thinking, and presents us with a Le Corbusier for the 21st century. This revised edition features a new introduction; some illustrations have now been replaced with colour.

Modern Architecture - A Critical History (Paperback, 5th Edition): Kenneth Frampton Modern Architecture - A Critical History (Paperback, 5th Edition)
Kenneth Frampton 1
R562 Discovery Miles 5 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This highly acclaimed survey of modern architecture and its origins has become a classic since it first appeared in 1980, and has helped to shape architectural practice and discourse worldwide. For this extensively revised and updated fifth edition, Kenneth Frampton has added a new section that explores in detail the modernist tradition in architecture across the globe in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. He examines the varied ways in which architects are not only responding to the geographical, climatic, material and cultural contexts of their buildings, but also pursuing distinct lines of approach that emphasize topography, morphology, sustainability, materiality habitat and civic form. It remains an essential book for all students of architecture and architectural history.

Making Architecture: The work of John McAslan + Partners (Hardcover): Kenneth Powell Making Architecture: The work of John McAslan + Partners (Hardcover)
Kenneth Powell; Foreword by Kenneth Frampton; Introduction by Alan Powers; Edited by Chris Foges
R1,306 Discovery Miles 13 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The first survey in nearly two decades of the work of John McAslan + Partners. Making Architecture both provides an up-to-date account of the work of John McAslan + Partners, one of Britain’s most respected and dynamic architectural practices, and analyses the culture of a studio that has made a remarkable contribution to architecture, place-making and the lives of individuals for four decades. A series of thematic chapters includes detailed, fully illustrated descriptions of many recent and ongoing international projects, from Central and Waterloo stations in Sydney and ten new stations for Delhi Metro to the transformation of King’s Cross station in London; from the sensitive restoration of the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex, to the new Doha Mosque and nearby Msheireb Museums in Qatar. It also includes the pioneering initiatives for which the McAslan studio has become well known and that underline the practice’s humanity and sense of social responsibility: the urgent restoration of the Iron Market in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, after the devastating earthquake in 2010; the Hidden Homelessness initiative, begun in 2017; the N17 project that provided a pop-up design studio in Tottenham, London, after the riots of 2011, with the aim of inspiring young people to become engaged in the regeneration of their own community; and many others. Edited by Chris Foges, with a foreword by Kenneth Frampton and an introduction by Alan Powers, and with contributions by architectural specialists, this beautifully designed book offers the key to understanding the development and philosophy of one of the world’s most socially engaged architectural practices.

Hawaiian Modern - The Architecture of Vladimir Ossipoff (Paperback): Dean Sakamoto Hawaiian Modern - The Architecture of Vladimir Ossipoff (Paperback)
Dean Sakamoto; Karla Britton; Foreword by Kenneth Frampton; Marc Treib
R1,311 Discovery Miles 13 110 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

An illuminating study of the architecture of one of the 20th century’s most important tropical modernists Vladimir Ossipoff (1907–1998), known as the “master of Hawaiian architecture,” was at the forefront of the postwar phenomenon known as tropical modernism. Although he practiced at a time of rapid growth and social change in Hawai`i, Ossipoff criticized large-scale development and advocated environmentally sensitive designs, developing a distinctive form of architecture appropriate to the lush topography, microclimates, and vernacular traditions of the Hawaiian islands.   This stunning book, now available for the first time in paperback, surveys Ossipoff’s buildings, which demonstrate a striking interplay of indoor and outdoor space, as well as a vibrant and glamorous architectural style that has proven delightfully particular to its place and durable over time. Published in association with the Honolulu Museum of Art Exhibition Schedule: Honolulu Academy of Arts, Hawaii (November 29, 2007 – January 27, 2008) Yale School of Architecture, New Haven (Fall 2008) Deutsches Architekturmuseum, Frankfurt (Spring 2009)

Wright's Writings - Reflections on Culture and Politics, 1894-1959 (Paperback): Kenneth Frampton Wright's Writings - Reflections on Culture and Politics, 1894-1959 (Paperback)
Kenneth Frampton
R752 Discovery Miles 7 520 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Wright's Writings traces the discursive work of Frank Lloyd Wright through a set of essays by Kenneth Frampton. Originally written as a series of introductions to the five-volume collection of Wright's writing published in 1992, the essays are gathered here as a critical survey of the architect's written and spoken work-a body of text that testifies to Wright's staggering prolificacy, pleasure in argument, diversity of interests, and desire to engage with timely political debates. Alongside these five essays, Wright's Writings provides a visual record of Wright's literary output, demonstrating the range of media he employed in the act of making architecture. Read together, it presents a history of the architect through the essays, books, letters, lectures, and speeches he wrote as well as the material and social cultures he navigated.

Meditations in Entropy - The Work of Kashef Chowdhury / URBANA in Bangladesh: Kashef Chowdhury Meditations in Entropy - The Work of Kashef Chowdhury / URBANA in Bangladesh
Kashef Chowdhury; Edited by Kenneth Frampton, Robert McCarter
R1,199 Discovery Miles 11 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

“The changing climate is no longer debatable here, it is this land’s unfeigned, monstrous reality,” says Dhaka-based architect Kashef Chowdhury. His firm URBANA, established in 1995, has produced an astonishingly diverse collection of works of divergent scales, typologies, and contexts and located in one of the meteorologically most complex and challenging regions in the world. A hospital introduced into an economy decimated by rising oceans, a shelter against cyclones in Bangladesh’s southern coastal region, projects for locations in the country’s north near the Himalaya mountains facing devouring waves of floods, and architectural interventions in one of the world’s densest metropolitan areas: URBANA’s designs are incisive critical responses to dissimilar issues and urgencies. They are all rooted in the belief that architecture can no longer be optical or sensational, but be built of philosophy and empathy for our increasingly fragile and shared ecological and human condition. Meditations in Entropy is the first-ever comprehensive monograph on the work of Kashef Chowdhury / URBANA. It features 16 of the firm’s designs in detail through photographs by acclaimed architectural photographer Hélène Binet and numerous plans, drawings, sketches, and further images. Perceptive essays are contributed by eminent critics and historians Kenneth Frampton, Robert McCarter, and William J R Curtis. The book is rounded-off with conversations between Chowdhury, Swiss architect Niklaus Graber, and the distinguished architectural historian Philip Ursprung that further explicate URBANA’s unique approach.

Ontology of Construction - On Nihilism of Technology and Theories of Modern Architecture (Paperback, Revised): Gevork Hartoonian Ontology of Construction - On Nihilism of Technology and Theories of Modern Architecture (Paperback, Revised)
Gevork Hartoonian; Foreword by Kenneth Frampton
R707 Discovery Miles 7 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Ontology of Construction explores theories of construction in modern architecture, focusing on the relationship between nihilism of technology and architecture. The essays articulate the implications of technology in works by such architects as Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Mies Van der Rohe. Hartoonian also examines Gottfried Semper's discourse on the tectonic and the relationship between architecture and other crafts. Emphasizing "fabrication" as a critical theme for contemporary architectural theory and practice, Ontology of Construction is a provocative contribution to the current debate in these areas.

In Extremis is a cartography of contemporary global architecture, focusing upon the close relationship between different building types and the landscapes in which they are situated, illuminating the resonances and contrasts, continuities and discontinuities between new work and the natural or urban environment. With essays by Alessio Assonitis, Kenneth Frampton, Juhani Palaasma, Dimitri Philippidis, Jeannette Plaut, Jilly Traganou.

Kenneth Frampton: Conversations with Daniel Talesnik: Kenneth Frampton, Daniel Talesnik, Mary McLeod Kenneth Frampton: Conversations with Daniel Talesnik
Kenneth Frampton, Daniel Talesnik, Mary McLeod
R529 Discovery Miles 5 290 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Kenneth Frampton: Conversations with Daniel Talesnik presents seven interviews with the architectural historian reflecting on the long arc of his rich and influential career in the discipline. Spanning Frampton’s early years as an architecture student at the Guildford School of Art to his nearly fifty years as a professor at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation, the interviews trace not only the development and implications of his work but also the cultural, political, and discursive terrain surrounding it. Here Frampton outlines the formation of his seminal ideas of “critical regionalism” and “tectonic culture,” and also ruminates on how he understands his own role as a writer on architecture. The book includes an essay by Mary McLeod, which takes stock of Frampton’s “criticality” and his enduring impact on architectural practice. As a whole, Kenneth Frampton: Conversations with Daniel Talesnik is as much a portrait of a thinker as a record of the books, buildings, and ideas that have inspired such profound architectural thought.

Evolution of a Retail Streetscape is much more than simply a lush visual and textual narrative showcasing DP Architects' extensive contribution to the character, growth and personality of the famous Singapore shopping and entertainment precinct. It also explores the concept of retail architectural typology generally, provides a brief contextual history of Singapore from British colonisation onwards, outlines the development and evolution of Orchard Road in particular, and explores some of the world's other famous shopping streets.

Architecture and the Public World - Kenneth Frampton: Kenneth Frampton Architecture and the Public World - Kenneth Frampton
Kenneth Frampton; Edited by Miodrag Mitrašinovic
R2,541 Discovery Miles 25 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Architecture and the Public World brings together key writings by Kenneth Frampton, the eminent architectural historian and critic, from the 1980s to the present. Articles are grouped into thematic sections representing abiding concerns of Frampton's criticism: history and critical theory; modes of criticism; the vicissitudes of urban form, and tactility, tectonics, and resistance. The volume also includes a new interview with Frampton and an essay by Clive Dilnot exploring the relevance of Frampton's thought for design history and criticism. The anthology represents Frampton's abiding concern for labor and the political dimensions of architecture, including his development of the concept of 'critical regionalism', but, in featuring writings from across the range and breadth of Frampton's career, enables a broader understanding of his work, demonstrating the potential for architectural interpretation and analysis to function as a mode of cultural criticism.

Frank Lloyd Wright is not only synonymous with architecture, his name is also synonymous with the American house in the twentieth century. In particular, his residential work has been the subject of continuing interest and controversy. Wright's Fallingwater (1935), the seminal masterpiece perched over a waterfall deep in the Pennsylvania highlands, is perhaps the best-known private house in the history of the world. In fact, Wright's houses-from his Prairie style Robie House (1906) in Chicago, to the Storer (1923) and Freeman (1923) houses in Los Angeles, and Taliesen West (1937) in the Arizona desert-are all touchstones of modern architecture. For the first time, all 289 extant houses are shown here in exquisite color photographs. Along with Weintraub's stunning photos and a selection of floor plans and archival images, the book includes text and essays by several leading Wright scholars. Frank Lloyd Wright: The Houses is an event of great importance and a major contribution to the literature on this titan of modern architecture.

The Other Modern Movement - Architecture, 1920-1970 (Hardcover): Kenneth Frampton The Other Modern Movement - Architecture, 1920-1970 (Hardcover)
Kenneth Frampton
R1,284 Discovery Miles 12 840 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

A revealing new look at modernist architecture, emphasizing its diversity, complexity, and broad inventiveness "[Frampton] remains a formidable force in architecture . . . The Other Modern Movement offers an opportunity to re-examine the Western canon of 20th-century architecture-which Frampton himself was crucial in establishing-and delve deeper into the work of lesser-known practitioners."-Josephine Minutillo, Architectural Record Usually associated with Mies and Le Corbusier, the Modern Movement was instrumental in advancing new technologies of construction in architecture, including the use of glass, steel, and reinforced concrete. Renowned historian Kenneth Frampton offers a bold look at this crucial period, focusing on architects less commonly associated with the movement in order to reveal the breadth and complexity of architectural modernism. The Other Modern Movement profiles nineteen architects, each of whom consciously contributed to the evolution of a new architectural typology through a key work realized between 1922 and 1962. Frampton's account offers new insights into iconic buildings like Eileen Gray's E-1027 House in France and Richard Neutra's Kaufmann House in Palm Springs, California, as well as lesser-known works such as Antonin Raymond's Tokyo Golf Club and Alejandro de la Sota's Maravillas School Gymnasium in Madrid. Foregrounding the ways that these diverse projects employed progressive models, advanced new methods in construction techniques, and displayed a new sociocultural awareness, Frampton shines a light on the rich legacy of the Modern Movement and the enduring potential of the unfinished modernist project.

Dan Cruickshank, Sir Banister Fletcher, Andrew Saint, Kenneth Frampton, Peter Blundell-Jones
R6,598 Discovery Miles 65 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The 20th edition of Sir Banister Fletcher's A History of Architecture is the first major work of history to include an overview of the architectural achievements of the 20th Century. Banister Fletcher has been the standard one volume architectural history for over 100 years and continues to give a concise and factual account of world architecture from the earliest times. In this twentieth and centenary edition, edited by Dan Cruickshank with three consultant editors and fourteen new contributors, chapters have been recast and expanded and a third of the text is new. * There are new chapters on the twentieth-century architecture of the Middle East (including Israel), South-east Asia, Hong Kong, Japan and Korea, the Indian subcontinent, Russia and the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe and Latin America. * The chapter on traditional architecture of India has been rewritten and the section on traditional Chinese architecture has been expanded, both with new specially commissioned drawings * The architecture of the Americas before 1900 has been enlarged to include, for the first time, detailed coverage of Latin America and the Caribbean * The book's scope has been widened to include more architecture from outside Europe * The bibliography has been expanded into a separate section and is a key source of information on every period of world architecture * The coverage of the 20th century architecture of North America has been divided into two chapters to allow fuller coverage of contemporary works * 20th century architecture of Western Europe has been radically recast * For the first time the architecture of the twentieth century is considered as a whole and assessed in an historical perspective * Coverage has been extended to include buildings completed during the last ten years * The coverage of Islamic architecture has been increased and re-organised to form a self contained section This unique reference book places buildings in their social, cultural and historical settings to describe the main patterns of architectural development, from Prehistoric to the International Style. Again in the words of Sir Banister Fletcher, this book shows that 'Architecture ... provides a key to the habits, thoughts and aspirations of the people, and without a knowledge of this art the history of any period lacks that human interest with which it should be invested.'

Le Corbusier (Paperback): Kenneth Frampton Le Corbusier (Paperback)
Kenneth Frampton
R616 Discovery Miles 6 160 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Le Corbusier is probably the most famous and certainly the most controversial architect of the twentieth century. His impact on the urban fabric around us and on the way we live has been gigantic because of the richness and variety of his work and his passionately expressed philosophy of architecture.

Weaving through his long and prolific life are certain recurrent themes -- his perennial drive toward new types of dwelling, from the early white villas to the Unite d'Habitation at Marseille; his evolving concepts of urban form, including the Plan Voisin of 1925 with its cruciform towers imposed on the city of Paris and his work at Chandigarh in India; and his belief in a new technocratic order. The distinguished critic and historian Kenneth Frampton reexamines all these facets of his artistic and philosophical worldview in the light of recent discoveries, and presents us with a Le Corbusier for the twenty-first century.

Technology and Place - Sustainable Architecture and the Blueprint Farm (Paperback, New): Steven A. Moore Technology and Place - Sustainable Architecture and the Blueprint Farm (Paperback, New)
Steven A. Moore; Introduction by Kenneth Frampton
R921 Discovery Miles 9 210 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Developing "sustainable" architectural and agricultural technologies was the intent behind Blueprint Farm, an experimental agricultural project designed to benefit farm workers displaced by the industrialization of agriculture in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Yet, despite its promise, the very institutions that created Blueprint Farm terminated the project after just four years (1987-1991).

In this book, Steven Moore demonstrates how the various stakeholders' competing definitions of "sustainability," "technology," and "place" ultimately doomed Blueprint Farm. He reconstructs the conflicting interests and goals of the founders, including Jim Hightower and the Texas Department of Agriculture, Laredo Junior College, and the Center for Maximum Potential Building Systems, and shows how, ironically, they unwittingly suppressed the self-determination of the very farm workers the project sought to benefit. From the instructive failure of Blueprint Farm, Moore extracts eight principles for a regenerative architecture, which he calls his "nonmodern manifesto."

Kenneth Frampton; Edited by John Cava
R1,592 R1,289 Discovery Miles 12 890 Save R303 (19%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Composed of ten essays and an epilogue that trace the history of contemporary form as an evolving poetic of structure and construction, the book's analytical framework rests on Frampton's close readings of key French and German, and English sources from the eighteenth century to the present. Kenneth Frampton's long-awaited follow-up to his classic A Critical History of Modern Architecture is certain to influence any future debate on the evolution of modern architecture. Studies in Tectonic Culture is nothing less than a rethinking of the entire modern architectural tradition. The notion of tectonics as employed by Frampton-the focus on architecture as a constructional craft-constitutes a direct challenge to current mainstream thinking on the artistic limits of postmodernism, and suggests a convincing alternative. Indeed, Frampton argues, modern architecture is invariably as much about structure and construction as it is about space and abstract form. Composed of ten essays and an epilogue that trace the history of contemporary form as an evolving poetic of structure and construction, the book's analytical framework rests on Frampton's close readings of key French and German, and English sources from the eighteenth century to the present. He clarifies the various turns that structural engineering and tectonic imagination have taken in the work of such architects as Perret, Wright, Kahn, Scarpa, and Mies, and shows how both constructional form and material character were integral to an evolving architectural expression of their work. Frampton also demonstrates that the way in which these elements are articulated from one work to the next provides a basis upon which to evaluate the works as a whole. This is especially evident in his consideration of the work of Perret, Mies, and Kahn and the continuities in their thought and attitudes that linked them to the past. Frampton considers the conscious cultivation of the tectonic tradition in architecture as an essential element in the future development of architectural form, casting a critical new light on the entire issue of modernity and on the place of much work that has passed as "avant-garde." China Dialogues (Paperback): Vladimir Belogolovsky, Kenneth Frampton, Crisie Yuan, Tjup China Dialogues (Paperback)
Vladimir Belogolovsky, Kenneth Frampton, Crisie Yuan, Tjup
R521 Discovery Miles 5 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Since the mid-1990s, when China allowed its architects to practice independently from government-run design institutes, a new kind of architecture, distinguished by unique regional characteristics, has emerged. China Dialogues is a rigorously selected collection of insightful interviews that the book's author Vladimir Belogolovsky has conducted with 21 leading Chinese architects during his extensive travels in China. At the time when so many buildings that are being built around the world are no longer rooted in their place and culture, the leading Chinese architects succeeded collectively in producing unique architectural body of work that could not be confused with any other regional school. The interviews are accompanied by over 120 photographs and drawings of beautifully executed projects built throughout China since early 2000s. China Dialogues opens up the thinking process of the country's top architects, as they share their ideas, insights, intentions, and visions in unusually revealing and candid ways.

This publication deals with projects that the partnership PROMONTORIO developed over the past 30 years. They constitute an impressive body of work for various places across Europe, Africa, the Middle East and the USA, ranging from city planning, to culture and education, heritage and conservation, commercial and mixed-use, in addition to hospitality and leisure. The idea of a reflective practice, set forth by PROMONTORIO, summons the ability to critically and ethically reflect on its own actions, while engaging in a process of continuous adaptation and learning. Perceived as kind of ‘practicing school’ for various generations in Portugal, the practice evolved, in both theory and practice, with the idea that deliberate reflection on experience is essential to cultivate a developmental insight on architecture.
