This book examines the tremendous benefits that come when we think beyond the boundaries of national interests and consider the venture and adventure into space as a matter of shared ambition, shared knowledge, shared risk, and shared benefit across all of humanity. In our previous books on the meaning and significance of space we have explored a broad range of these themes and topics, starting first in Beyond Earth with a broad examination of many different issues, and then in our second volume with a collection of writings about the challenges and opportunities that Living in Space will present. In the third volume in this series we examined the future of business in space, Space Commerce. The underlying premise of each of these books is that space is not only an irresistible lure for our imaginations, but also an inevitable destination for our serious goals and ambitions. Collectively, the many authors who have contributed their works to this series are committed to the realities of life, science, culture, and business in space, and we all agree that extending civilization into space is both a valid destination that will ultimately be home to millions and billions of us, and so in a very real way it also will become humanity's destiny.
Innovation is the process of creating new ideas and turning them into new business value. Permanent Innovation is the process of doing it continuously, as a matter of strategy, method, and habit. It happens in organizations that embrace innovation as a core value, practice innovation as a core methodology, and produce innovation as a consistent output. The notion of permanent innovation may at first be startling, and it may even seem to be a contradiction. The concept of permanence implies stability and the absence of change, while the concept of innovation implies constancy of change and novelty. Combining these two, however, yields an important synthesis: the practice of innovation not as an occasional occurrence, but as a repeating process of value creation and organizational adaptation. In these times of accelerating change and increasing competition, Permanent Innovation is an absolute necessity. This book is about how to achieve it.
"This third book by the Aerospace Technology Working Group (ATWG) is a broad and fascinating survey of the important topic of Space Commerce. The authors are genuine experts within their fields, and many of them have been together in the loose collaboration of the ATWG for two decades. They share a common impatience with incremental development and bureaucracy, and will lead the reader in exploring the frontier of this emerging business venue." Bruce McCandless II, 24-Year NASA Astronaut

The number of internet users is doubling every year, and will soon total more than 100 million people. This group will constitute an enormous and attractive market segment, one with exceptional buying power and demonstrated acceptance of new products and new technologies. However, many people use this new medium primarily for social dialog, which gives the internet a dual role and a unique character that is unlike any medium or marketplace that has existed before. As it matures, therefore, the internet poses unique challenges to old ways of doing business even as it promises to have enduring impact on the way that business is conducted worldwide.
