Companies are often their own worst enemies. We work in
disconnected functional and geographic silos, making it impossible
to achieve end-to-end effectiveness. We struggle to make optimal
decisions due to our overwhelming lack of quality information. In
Optimize Now (or else ), David Fisher identifies the source of many
of these problems and attacks them at their core. He explores the
critical importance of processes and information that represent
both the root of our problems and our greatest opportunity for
dramatic improvement. He introduces new leadership in the Chief
Process and Information Officer and the Process and Information
Department, and specifies how to position these roles for
enterprise-wide success. He further introduces the Enterprise
Optimization Framework, an innovative, metric-driven
decision-making framework, to ensure decisions are no longer based
on gut feel but rather on quantitative expected outcomes. Finally,
he explores the do's and don'ts of outsourcing and information
technology with specific guidance on how these resources can be
utilized to advance end-to-end optimization. It's time to put an
end to our own misery. downward spiral to Enterprise Extinction.
Survival is at stake. We must Optimize Now (or else ).
In 1932, an elderly widow did something seemingly impossible -she
was elected as Iowa's first female Secretary of State. Ola Babcock
Miller proceeded to do something else seemingly impossible -create
a Highway Safety Patrol for her home state. She promoted it with a
single platform: "Save Lives First " Her vision and determination
inspired the birth of a law enforcement agency that Iowans have
voted as "Second only to God" when it comes to their trust. This is
the story of Mrs. Miller's vision and how it evolved from the
"First Fifty" men of the Iowa Highway Safety Patrol in 1935 to the
men and women of the modern Iowa State Patrol. It is also the story
of Iowa's history, beginning with the coming of the automobile at
the start of the 2Oth century. It continues with the muddy ruts
that passed for early state roads, to the gangsters and bootleggers
who saw the automobile as a means to expand their opportunities,
and the development of the modern US Highway system. Killer
tornados, plane crashes, massive floods, prison riots, and sub-zero
blizzards have all been part of the Iowa State Patrol's
jurisdiction. So have organ donor relays, safety education, drug
awareness, security for visiting celebrities, and aid to stranded
motorists. The members of the Iowa State Patrol have upheld their
original motto of "Courtesy-Service-Protection" and have an
enormous affect on every man, woman, and child who live in or pass
through Iowa. Scott Fisher has spent more than a decade researching
state historical and ISP archives, as well as interviewing the men
and women who have helped shape the Iowa State Patrol. Much of this
book is told in their own words, including the reminiscences of
members of that "First Fifty" class of 1935, which included Scott's
great uncle, Russell J. Fisher. Also included are almost 300
photographs, some of them never before published.
Any discussion of the various facets of petroleum policy in the
United States rests to a greater or less extent on the issue of
sensitivity of petroleum exploration, and hence of new petroleum
discoveries to economic incentives. Indeed, a principle argument in
favour of having a special petroleum policy at all is that domestic
petroleum exploration is so sensitive to economic considerations
that in the absence of special incentives exploration expenditures
would sharply decrease, as would the amount of petroleum
discovered; consequently, the nation's known oil resources would be
reduced to an extent dangerous in the event of an international
crisis. This study attempts to answer the question: how sensitive
are new petroleum discoveries to economic incentives? This book
will be of interest to students of environmental studies.
This book brings together leading scholars in the field of
creativity to provide an overview and examination of the work of
Teresa Amabile, a pioneer of research on organizational creativity.
The authors explore Dr. Amabile's contributions to the modern study
of creativity in organizations and her influence on current
research. Further, they also reflect on how her work might be used
to advance future research, particularly in the areas of
componential theory and its extension as well as the consensual
assessment technique. The contributors include both eminent and
emerging scholars and their diverse backgrounds can be seen to
reflect the breadth of the impact of Teresa Amabile's work across
the areas of the social psychology of creativity, creativity
measurement, and application of this knowledge to understanding
creativity and innovation in the workplace. This book will provide
an invaluable resource to students and scholars of social
psychology, creativity studies, industrial and organizational
psychology, business and management.
The editors of the present volume were also privileged to
collaborate on an earlier book, Intimacy, also published by Plenum
Press. In our pref ace to that volume, we described the importance
and essence of inti macy and its centrality in the domain of human
relationships. After reading the contributions to that volume, a
number of issues emerged and pressed for elaboration. These
questions concerned the nature and parameters of intimacy. The
natural extension of these con cerns can be found in the current
work, Self-Disclosure in the Therapeutic Relationship. The editors,
after careful consideration of the theoretical, philo sophical, and
technical literature, are impressed by the relationship between
intimacy and appropriate self-disclosure. Self-disclosure, in this
context, refers to those behaviors that allow oneself to be suffi
ciently revealing so as to become available for an intimate
relationship. Levenson has referred to psychotherapy as the
demystification of expe rience wherein intimacy emerges during the
time that interpersonal vigilance diminishes through growing
feelings of safety. Interpersonal experience can be demystified and
detoxified by disclosure, openness, and authentic relatedness. This
is not an easy process. Before one can be open, make contact, or
reach out with authenticity, one must be available to oneself. This
means making contact with-and accepting-the dark, fearful, and of
ten untouched areas within the person that are often hidden even
from oneself. The process of therapy enables those areas to gain
conscious ness, be tolerated, and be shared with trusted others."
"The Power of Customer Misbehavior" explores the importance of
customer driven innovation for top line and bottom line growth. It
shows how companies should not only learn to identify how their
products are being misused, but also how to use this knowledge to
innovate new products and services that better meet customer needs
and promote viral growth. These techniques also promote long-term
customer loyalty and growth even in hypercompetitive environments.
This unique new book is the first to explore the idea of 'customer
misuse': when customers modify features or expand the usage of
products and services in ways that were never intended. Reacting
appropriately to customer misuse will allow companies to enter new
markets, create more loyal customers, and encourage customers to
tell others about the company's products, all of which foster
faster growth. These compelling concepts are presented in the form
of simple actionable principles and illustrated with rich case
studies from successful companies such as Twitter, Intuit, eBay and
Coca-Cola, to offer the first practical guide to harnessing this
new source of strategic innovation.
The book provides a practical and readable guide to getting the
most out of attending a scientific conference. The topics covered
include writing an abstract, preparing and presenting a poster or
talk, chairing a session, making good use of poster and oral
sessions, and networking. Also included is practical advice on
registering for a conference and planning travel. Aimed primarily
at PhD students who are attending their first conference, it is
also relevant to junior postdoctoral scientists.Different types of
scientific conferences are discussed, together with their distinct
roles in the development of a scientific career. After reading this
book, a student or postdoc will be in a better position to make an
effective presentation of their work at a conference and to achieve
the maximum benefit from attending the conference, including
promoting their work, learning about the latest developments and
getting to know the key players in their field.
Teachers are responsible for delivering, selecting, and
implementing learning activities for their classrooms. They must
consider the best approaches to engage their students as well as to
meet the school's standards in instruction. Here is a practical
how-to book to supplement the social studies curriculum. It places
at the teacher's disposal, hundreds of classroom-tested activities
that build learner support and interest in Social Studies (grades
6-12) content while at the same time being quick and low-cost to
implement. Many of the lessons and activities can be easily adapted
to existing lessons and may serve as a bridge to younger
generations of learners. Both experienced and brand new teachers
can benefit from this book.
This book is a step by step illustrated guide to planning and
writing dissertations and theses for undergraduate and graduate
science students. Topics covered include advice on writing each
section of a thesis as well as general discussions on collecting
and organizing references, keeping records, presenting data,
interacting with a supervisor and avoiding academic misconduct.
Recommendations about how to use word processors and other software
packages effectively are included, as well as advice on the use of
other resources. A concise summary of important points of English
grammar is given, along with appendices listing frequently confused
words and wordy phrases to avoid. Further appendices are provided,
including one on SI units. The aim is to provide an easy-to-read
guide that gives students practical advice about all aspects of
writing a science thesis or dissertation, starting from writing a
thesis plan and finishing with the viva and corrections to the
thesis.

The all-in-one reference to designing stunning and functional
kitchens and baths
Designing for today's kitchens and baths requires technical
savvy, a keen eye for aesthetics, and perhaps most important of
all, the ability to coordinate efforts across many disciplines.
"Kitchen and Bath Design" simplifies these complex decision-making
processes with a comprehensive strategy for achieving kitchen and
bath designs that successfully integrate beauty and
practicality--while meeting client expectations. Fundamental design
basics are covered, along with a host of important issues that
designers must consider when conceptualizing these specialized
rooms, such as ergonomics, codes and safety requirements, proper
lighting and ventilation, flooring, cabinetry, countertops, wall
surfaces, and more. Some of the topics that appear in this book
include:
A detailed introduction to construction, plumbing, and
electrical basics
A systematic approach to incorporating "green," energy-conscious
design
An overview of crucial design elements, including pattern,
texture, line, form or mass, color, space and light, and sound
The latest building codes and manufacturers' guidelines
Written by a leading expert in interior design, "Kitchen and
Bath Design" uses three-dimensional drawings and corresponding
photographs to deliver valuable information that is critical when
it comes to planning, designing, specifying, estimating, building,
pricing, or evaluating a kitchen or bathroom. Whether they're
working on a new or existing space, professional designers can
apply the lessons learned from this current andaccessible resource
to masterfully take on all kitchen or bathroom projects--from the
simplest to the most highly challenging.

DIABETES DRUG NOTES Diabetes is becoming more common in both older
and younger generations and in keeping with this escalation in
cases, there are an ever increasing number of drugs and drug
classes that are suitable to treat hyperglycaemia. In a unique
blend of diabetes practice, clinical pharmacology, and
cardiovascular medicine, Diabetes Drug Notes describes the
principles of clinical pharmacology with regards to diabetes
prescribing. Each drug class for the treatment of diabetes is
covered in detail, along with the effect on the cardiovascular and
renal systems caused by each drug. Building upon the success of
their "Drug Notes" series for Practical Diabetes and their "Drugs
for Diabetes" series in the British Journal of Cardiology, the team
of experts focuses on the glycaemic management of type 1 and type 2
diabetes, with other effects of antidiabetic drugs covered as well.
Diabetes Drug Notes also includes: Comprehensive and up-to-date
coverage of the drugs for the glycaemic management of patients with
type 1 or type 2 diabetes Expert reflection on prescribing
considerations for special groups, as well as common pitfalls in
prescribing Detailed case histories to illustrate relevant
information Summaries of recent guidelines related to diabetic
intervention Diabetes Drug Notes is a user-friendly guide for a

well as those who support them.
To stay competitive, firms need to build great products but they
also need to lend these products to the uses and misuses of their
customers and learn extensively from them. This is the first book
to explore the idea that allowing customers to adapt features in
online products or services to suit their needs is the key to viral
growth.
