Globalization processes are propelling a transformation of
governance. As political problems become more transnational, public
as well as private actors increasingly perform governance
activities beyond the level of individual states. This book
examines the wide variety of forms that governance can take in the
global system and their consequences. An overarching analytical
framework is applied to global institutions and initiatives in
areas such as trade liberalization, financial market regulation,
privacy protection, cybercrime, and food safety.
This book addresses the analysis of musical sounds from the
viewpoint of someone at the intersection between physicists,
engineers, piano technicians, and musicians. The study is
structured into three parts. The reader is introduced to a variety
of waves and a variety of ways of presenting, visualizing, and
analyzing them in the first part. A tutorial on the tools used
throughout the book accompanies this introduction. The mathematics
behind the tools is left to the appendices. Part Two provides a
graphical survey of the classical areas of acoustics that pertain
to musical instruments: vibrating strings, bars, membranes, and
plates. Part Three is devoted almost exclusively to the piano.
Several two- and three-dimensional graphical tools are introduced
to study various characteristics of pianos: individual notes and
interactions among them, the missing fundamental, inharmonicity,
tuning visualization, the different distribution of harmonic power
for the various zones of the piano keyboard, and potential uses for
quality control. These techniques are also briefly applied to other
musical instruments studied in earlier parts of the book. For
physicists and engineers there are appendices to cover the
mathematics lurking beneath the numerous graphs and a brief
introduction to Matlab (R) which was used to generate these graphs.
A website accompanying the book
(https://sites.google.com/site/analysisofsoundsandvibrations/)
contains: - Matlab (R) scripts - mp3 files of sounds - references
to YouTube videos - and up-to-date results of recent studies
Discharged in 1959 after one year at the U.S. Naval Academy because
of a progressive left ear hearing loss, I went on to college and
medical school. In 1965, my draft board notified me that upon
completion of internship in 1967 I would be drafted despite my
disqualifying medical disability. Doctors with a medical
disqualifying condition were being drafted because of the rapidly
escalating conflict in Vietnam. I volunteered for a Navy program
that made me an Ensign and paid all my expenses during my last year
of medical school. After my pediatric internship ended in June 1967
I was assigned to a small Navy Hospital in Sasebo, Japan as a
general medical officer. After 2 years there I reported to the Navy
Hospital San Diego to complete training in general pediatrics and
two additional years of training in hematology and oncology. The
rest of my clinical years were spent training others in these
specialties. In 1984 I transitioned to Navy Executive Medicine and
in 1987 I reported to Washington where I had several challenging
assignments as the Cold War ended. I served in the most senior
positions in military medicine, retiring as a Vice Admiral in 1998.
This volume analyzes changing relationships between religion and
national identity in the course of European integration. Examining
elite discourse, media debates and public opinions across Europe
over a decade, it explores how accelerated European integration and
Eastern enlargement have affected religious markers of collective
identity.
Robert Wall began his teaching career at Seattle Pacific University
in 1978. Now, forty years later and in celebration of his
seventieth birthday, colleagues and former students have gathered
to produce this volume in honor of their friend and teacher. The
results are sure to delight all of those who have studied under or
been friends of Professor Wall. The essays are grouped under two
general themes: theology and methodology (with an emphasis on
Wesleyan biblical hermeneutics, canonical perspectives, and the
implications of these approaches for church life and work) and
biblical texts/themes, especially with a view to the relationship
of the study of Scripture to the life of the Christian. In both of
these areas, the contributions bear in mind Wall’s conviction
that academic study and spiritual life need not—in fact, should
not—be kept apart. The contributors to this volume include Frank
Anthony Spina, Andrew Knapp, Shannon Nicole Smythe, Daniel Castelo,
Anthony B. Robinson, Eugene E. Lemcio, Sara M. Koenig, Jack
Levison, Laura C. S. Holmes, John Painter, and Stephen E. Fowl.
