An Anatomy of Skepticism (Hardcover): Manfred Weidhorn An Anatomy of Skepticism (Hardcover)
Manfred Weidhorn
R838 Discovery Miles 8 380 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Every thoughtful person must ask, "What do I know?" The two most explosive fields, religion and politics, are notably filled with strident and conflicting claims. Close analysis in clear language reveals that no one knows what he or she is talking about. Because of the challenge of unexamined assumptions, of unclear cause-and-effect relationships, and of the rarity of reliable sources, a person who wants to be open-minded cannot avoid adopting skepticism as the least embarrassing philosophy. Some discoveries made in this book: *Reason appears to prove nothing *Intuition is probably a delusion *Facts are slippery *Religious people yearn for suicide *Why socialism cannot work *Where conservatives screwed up badly (as they admit) *The equation STAR+2R+R3=GPS explains the cultural history of the world *Shakespeare was a skeptic *Dante's curious insight into love *Passing the Magic Johnson test *Tom De Lay does not realize that relativism is as American as apple pie *Hamlet, who never existed, is more real than you or I. Here is a sample observation: "People believe in God because the Bible tells all about him, and they believe in the Bible because God wrote or inspired it. This is a classic case of the Fallacy of Circular Reasoning."

Sample these observations:

  • So many religions out there! Religious affiliation is a lottery ticket. The winning ticket, if there is one, will be announced in the hereafter, if it exists.
  • In a single male ejaculation, there are some 100 million sperm cells. Since each cell carries a slightly different genetic makeup and would create a different person, each human being who ever lived won the lottery of life at odds of 100 million to one. And yet people complain of bad luck.
  • In a traditional, theocentric society, the four values of love, marriage, sex, and procreation come as part of a single package. We moderns have unwrapped the package and disassembled the toy.
  • Statements like "I really love you!" and "You are beautiful!" are entrance fees.
  • The Pill made prudence prudery.
  • Humankind does not deserve itself.
If you enjoy these, another 1500 like them await you in LANDMINES OF THE MIND. Sometimes amusing; often shocking; always thought-provoking.

The Person of the Millennium - The Unique Impact of Galileo on World History (Paperback): Manfred Weidhorn The Person of the Millennium - The Unique Impact of Galileo on World History (Paperback)

Galileo's pioneering use of the telescope showed that the earth is not at the center of the universe and led to his trial and conviction by the Inquisition. This first clash between science and religion still bedevils us today in many ways. Galileo, however, made an even greater contribution to history when, in destroying medieval science and discovering the laws of motion, he established the procedure of modern science. As a direct result of his work, Revelation and Scripture as sources of truth were replaced by Experimentation and Measurement, while Tradition and Authority as interpreters of truth were replaced by Individualism and Egalitarianism. This tremendous alteration in the scientific process eventually swept through all non-scientific disciplines and created the modern world. A good case can therefore be made that Galileo is the most influential person in history. Even if one does not agree with the conclusion, tracing this dramatic change is one of the most exciting of intellectual adventures.

"Argues well....Interesting....Insightful and well written....Recommended." --Choice (March 2006)

This is a very sweeping thesis involving grand theorizing in the style of the old philosophy of history. However, Weidhorn's argument is nuanced and sophisticated.... Whether or not one values this type of grand theorizing and whether or not one completely accepts the thesis, Weidhorn has constructed a supporting argument that is eloquent, intelligent, cogent, and sometimes original, and has written a well-argued, thoughtful, and thought-provoking book.
