This book examines construction safety from the perspective of
informatics and econometrics. It demonstrates the potential of
employing various information technology approaches to share
construction safety knowledge. In addition, it presents the
application of econometrics in construction safety studies, such as
an analytic hierarchy process used to create a construction safety
index. It also discusses structure equation and dynamic panel
models for the analysis of construction safety claims. Lastly, it
describes the use of mathematical and econometric models to
investigate construction practitioners' safety.
This book addresses information technologies recently applied in
the field of construction safety. Combining case studies,
literature reviews and interviews to study the issue, it presents
cutting-edge applications of various information technologies (ITs)
in construction in different parts of the world, together with a
wealth of figures, tables and examples. Though primarily intended
for researchers and experts in the field, the book will also
benefit graduate students.
A close-to-ideal blend of suburb and city, speedy construction of
towers of Babylon, the sparkling proportion of glass and steel
buildings' facade at night showcase the wisdom of humans. They also
witness the footsteps, sweats and tears of architects and
engineers. Unfortunately, these signatures of human civilizations
are swathed in towering figures of construction accidents. Fretting
about these on sites, different countries adopt different measures
on sites. This book firstly sketches the construction accidents on
sites, followed by a review on safety measures in some of the
developing countries such as Bermuda, Egypt, Kuwait and China; as
well as developed countries, for example, the United States, France
and Singapore. It also highlights the enormous compensation costs
with the courts' experiences in the United Kingdom and Hong Kong.
This monograph presents an analysis of construction safety problems
and on-site safety measures from an economist's point of view. The
book includes examples from both emerging countries, e.g. China and
India, and developed countries, e.g. Australia and Hong Kong.
Moreover, the author covers an analysis on construction safety
knowledge sharing by means of updatable mobile technology such as
apps in Androids and iOS platform mobile devices. The target
audience comprises primarily researchers and experts in the field
but the book may also be beneficial for graduate students.
This fascinating study compares and contrasts the immense internal
migration movements in China and Indonesia. Over the next two
decades, approximately two-thirds of the rural labour force is
expected to migrate, transforming their respective societies from
primarily rural to urban based. Whilst both countries face similar
challenges as hundreds of millions of people move, the policies
implemented and their consequences are very different. Using an
extensive range of qualitative and quantitative data, the
contributors explore the impact of migration on migrants and their
families, as well as the rural communities they leave behind and
the urban communities they enter. They discover that migrants earn
less and face discrimination in the urban labour market, although
more so in China where there are greater restrictions. However
migration contributes to a more equal distribution of income in
urban China and to lowering poverty in rural China, and migrants
fare better on health and poverty indicators in Indonesia. The Great
Migration will strongly appeal to researchers, economists and
sociologists with a special interest in migration and development
studies. Policy-makers in both China and Indonesia will also find
much to fascinate them within this highly original book.
This book covers the economics of construction safety, such as the
asymmetric information of different construction practitioners in
Hong Kong, studies feminism in Australia's traditionally
male-dominated construction industry, and researches an efficient
Small-Scale Contractors' construction health and safety performance
management in Zambia. It also constructs the risk rating matrix and
assesses occupational hazards identification and risk Assessment in
Kaligandaki's Construction Project. Besides, it throws light on
construction safety informatics, such as scaffolds safety via
rule-based safety checking and BIM. It compares safety awareness in
academic databases in construction, manufacturing, traffic, and
health and food industries. It studies construction, real estate
hazard, and urban renewal hazard articles indexed on the Web of
Science. It conducts a systematic literature review on safety
culture. Lastly, it reviewed refurbishment and demolition work in
Hong Kong's legal databases.
This book covers artificial intelligence and ubiquitous cities. It
discusses the applications of the relevant tools in bringing
revolutionary new lives to mankind. It showcases various
applications of artificial intelligence in benefiting human
society. For example, AI classification shortens the human time
required for classifying court cases; humanoid robots help us
perform heavy-duty jobs like humans, connect all the smart home
devices, and take care of the kids and the elderly. It also
presents the application of AutoML to predict housing prices.
This book explores how econometric modelling can be used to provide
valuable insight into international housing markets. Initially
describing the role of econometrics modelling in real estate market
research and how it has developed in recent years, the book goes on
to compare and contrast the impact of various macroeconomic factors
on developed and developing housing markets. Explaining the
similarities and differences in the impact of financial crises on
housing markets around the world, the author's econometric analysis
of housing markets across the world provides a broad and nuanced
perspective on the impact of both international financial markets
and local macro economy on housing markets. With discussion of
countries such as China, Germany, UK, US and South Africa, the
lessons learned will be of interest to scholars of Real Estate
economics around the world.

The symbiosis between the law, economics and finance is evidenced
in our daily lives. This book elucidates the relationship between
these factors in Singapore and Hong Kong in direct and indirect
real estate market. In Singapore, for example, there is an
inseparable relationship between law, economics, finance and the
HDB market. The book also showcases the concept of invitation to
treat and offer, monetary compensation for environmental
externalities under the lens of institutional economics. It also
sheds light on the relationship between financial crisis,
regulations, housing prices and indirect real estate market.
How to effectively design and deliver virtual advisory services can
be a mystery to many public and private organisations. This study
examines the interesting phenomenon of providing virtual advisors
to assist users in accomplishing their tasks in the digital world.
Based on a thorough analysis of abundant typical applications in
various business and government sectors, this book discusses the
current status and future trends of virtual advisory services in
digital environments. This book also reveals exactly what users
expect from such services, and what they hate! It provides
thought-provoking guidelines for best practice in the design and
provision of virtual advisors on e-portals.
The book reviews the literature on the ecological succession of
plants on fallowed swiddens in tropical forests. Patterns of
ecological succession in tropical forests are insufficiently
understood, partly because results are scattered through a large
number of case studies reported in academic articles. So far, no
publication has attempted to bring these different case studies
together to identify common patters and trends. The goal of the
book is to review the different case studies, and identify common
patterns of ecological succession in fallowed swiddens, as well as
to pinpoint the factors that cause ecological succession in some
areas to differ from those in other areas. The book is organised in
four different sections: forest structure, forest diversity,
species composition, and the factors that contribute to differences
in forest recovery rates (the number of times the field was burned,
the length of fallow period, the type of soil, and the type of
forest). This book is an important contribution to tropical
forestry and shifting cultivation. Deforestation and forest
degradation are the largest sources of CO2, and shifting
cultivation is one of the main culprits. For this (and other
economic and political) reason governments attempt to curtail
shifting cultivation by shortening the years the fields can be left
fallow, or outright outlawing the farming practice. Yet, there is
insufficient understanding of the processes of ecological
succession in fallows, which raises the questions as to whether the
policy fulfils its objectives. "

Sustainable development has become a hot topic worldwide in recent
decades. Following the Copenhagen Summit, politicians and the
general public were once again faced with the reality of inevitable
climate change. Is there anything we can do to stop global warming?
Are there any possible ways to achieve the goal of zero carbon?
What can we, as laymen in the global village, do in the coming
years so that future generations can enjoy a natural environment
similar to ours? This book consists of three parts. The first part
is an introduction that provides a general overview of sustainable
development in China, Singapore, the United Kingdom, the United
States of America and Australia. The second part introduces the
concept of sustainability in the built environment. The third part
of this book focuses on sustainable land use planning in Hong Kong.
