The last of Beethoven's quartets, the F Major (Op. 135), represents
the last major work written by Beethoven. Only the revised finale
to the Op. 130 quartet was written later than this work. This
quartet is much smaller in scale than the other late quartets, but
continues the personal impact of the work. Beethoven titled the
fourth movement "Der schwer gefasste Entschluss" (The Difficult
Resolution) and labled two of the primary motives "Muss es sein?"
(Must it be?) and "Es muss sein " (It must be ).
Beethoven's Opus 59, Number 2 is the first of three quartets
written for a commission by Prince Andreas Razumovsky, who was
Russian Ambassador to Vienna at the time. The work comes just six
years after the last of Beethoven's early quartets, yet shows a
significant difference in style - and in length, with performance
times of over 40 minutes common for the quartet. This edition is a
Pocket Score, designed for ease of use in rehearsals or in studying
the work. Its compact size allows for easy transport in your case.
Beethoven followed in the footsteps of Haydn, father of the string
quartet, and created what is now regarded as one of the finest
collections of masterworks in the string quartet genre. From the
early quartets, reminiscent of some of Mozart's quartets, to the
soaring and emotional late quartets, these works have become
favorites of both performers and audiences around the world. This
collections includes the full scores for all 16 string quartets as
well as the Grosse Fuge. Early String Quartets: String Quartet No.

From 1823-1826, Beethoven composed a series of string quartets
which are now recognized as some of the masterworks of this genre.
These quartets show Beethoven at his height as a composer, with
composition occurring during the same timeframe as his Ninth
Symphony. This collection includes the five late quartets (Op. 127,
130, 131, 132, & 135) as well as the Grosse Fuge (Op. 134).

Originally written as the finale of Beethoven's 13th Quartet (Op.
130), the Grosse Fuge was later published as a separate work
following the poor reception of that quartet by the public. In its
current form, the Grosse Fuge (Op. 134), has become much loved
among Beethoven afficianados and is seen as one of his most
"contemporary" works.
Beethoven's String Quartet No. 14 in C-sharp minor (Op. 131) is
considered by many (including Beethoven himself) to be Beethoven's
finest string quartet. The work consists of seven movements, played
attaca, and covers all ranges of keys as it develops.
Written by a young Mozart in 1772, the three divertimenti commonly
known as the Salzburg Symphonies are works that bridge two common
forms - the divertimento of the time and the Italian symphony of
the time. While the true divertimento of the time was 5 movements,
these works are each three movements in length, as was the Italian
symphony of the time. These works are light-hearted and less
demanding on the players than many of Mozart's later works. Today,
the are performed either by string orchestra or by string quartet.
Beethoven's 15th Quartet in A minor, Op. 132, was actually the
thirteenth quartet in order of composition, but was published later
in the cycle. This quartet represents the last of the three great,
personal quartets. The third of the five movements in this quartet
is titled "Heiliger Dankgesang eines Genesenen an die Gottheit, in
der lydischen Tonart" (Holy Song of Thanksgiving by a Convalescent
to the Divinity, in the Lydian Mode), as it was written by
Beethoven after recovery from a serious illness, which Beethoven
feared would be fatal.
Beethoven's Middle String Quartets consist of the three Razumovsky
quartets (Opus 59), as well as the "Harp" (Opus 74) and "Serioso"
(Opus 95) quartets. The quartets were written between 1806 and 1810
and show the development of Beethoven's "heroic" style that was
common to many of his later symphonic works. These are the
Performer's Edition scores of each of the five quartets in one
paperback edition. The scores feature clean, modern typesetting for
ease of reading and studying.
Wagner's Siegfried Idyll (WWV 103) represents one of the few
non-operatic works created by Wagner. This work for small orchestra
was originally composed for his second wife, Cosima, and was
originally performed on her birthday, with Wagner waking her to the
theme.
Beethoven's 13th Quartet (Op. 130) in B-flat Major is traditionally
assigned the number 13 based on its publication date, though it was
acutally the 14th quartet he composed. This work features a unique
6 movement structure which mirrors Beethoven's traditional form
used in many symphonies and quartets, but repeating the two middle
movements. In its original form, this quartet included the Grosse
Fuge as its finale. After the first performance received mixed
reviews, Beethoven replaced the finale with the movement included
in this version and published the Grosse Fuge as a separate work.
Mozart's Serenade No. 12 in C minor (K 388), often referred to as
Nacht Musique, is a work for Woodwind Octet that has become widely
played. The work consists of four movements, with a canon in the
Minuet movement. This work was also transcribed by Mozart for
String Quintet and survives as K 406 in that form.
The first of Beethoven's late string quartets, the 12th Quartet in
E-flat Major (Op. 127) is a massive work that showcases the changes
in Beethoven's compositional technique. The first movement features
a regular interruption of the theme - a technique that Beethoven
used in a number of late compositions, while the third movement
features a tonal progression similar to one used in the finale of
the 9th Symphony.
This work (Op. 59, No. 2) is one of the Razumovsky Quartets
originally published in 1806. The second movement of the quartet
gives us a hint of what is to come in the Op. 132 quartet with its
hymn-like quality, while the third movement includes a "Theme
Russe" also used by Mussorgsky in Boris Gudunov. This theme is
thought to have been given to Beethoven by Razumovsky to use in the
quartet. Beethoven did so with humorous results. This edition is a
pocket score of the quartet, designed for easy use in rehearsals
and transport in your case, or for studying of the work.
Opus 59, No. 3 is the last of the three Rasumovsky Quartets written
by Beethoven on the commission of Prince Andreas Razumovsky. The
other two quartets in this series feature a specified Russian theme
(Theme Russe) in the work, while this work does not. Many have
looked to the second movement of the quartet as a Russian movement
- with decidedly different tonal qualities than were common to
Beethoven's work at the time. This edition is a Pocket Score,
designed for ease of use in rehearsals or in studying the work. Its
compact size makes it perfect for carrying in your case.
Beethoven's String Quartet No. 10 in E-flat Major, Opus 74, was
originally published in 1809 with the nickname "Harp" given by the
publisher. This nickname is based on the impressions in the first
movement with ascending arpeggios played pizzicato by alternating
instruments. While portions of the work foreshadow things to come
in Beethoven's late period, the fourth movement, with a traditional
classical theme and variations form, stands out as a point of
confusion to many Beethoven scholars. This is the Performer's
Edition Pocket Score of the work, designed for easy transport in a
case or compact carrying for study of the work.
The last of Beethoven's middle period string quartets, the String
Quartet No. 11 in F minor, Opus 95, represents a departure for
Beethoven. The work, which became known as the "Serioso" quartet
after Beethoven's initial tempo marking of "Quartetto Serioso," was
marked on the autograph as being completed in October 1810, but did
not receive a first performance until 1814. Beethoven was quoted as
saying the work was never intended for public performance.
Throughout the quartet, Beethoven experiments with new techniques
that he had not used in previous quartets, with silences and
unusual tonality for a sonata form work. This is the Performer's
Edition Pocket Score of the work, designed for easy transport in a
case or compact carrying for study of the work.
