In the summer of 1990, Southend had just clinched promotion to the Third Division under manager David Webb's leadership. Webb, a Chelsea legend in his playing days, spoke of his desire to oversee a second successive promotion into the unchartered territory of Division Two and make history at the same time. It was a bold claim from the manager and one that was not taken seriously by very many, but he believed in his team and himself.
