On the occasion of their 30th anniversary, Vienna-based Pichler
& Traupmann Architekten review their body of work to date. This
lavishly illustrated monograph documents in great detail their most
important designs, built and unrealised, arranged by topic.
Internationally renowned architectural publicists and scientists
contribute essays that explore the firm's vision and approach. A
complete index of their 250 or so projects and studies rounds out
the book. At the core of Pichler & Traupmann Architekten's
ambitious design philosophy is the potential of a given site in the
field of tension between polarities. The focus of their work is on
commercial, residential, and educational structure. Their key
designs include the headquarters of the Austrian motorists'
association OEAMTC in Vienna (2013-16), the extension of the
Kulturzentrum Eisenstadt (2006-12), the Future Art Lab of Vienna's
University of Music and Performing Arts (2014-20), the RAIQA
(Raiffeisen-Quartier) in Innsbruck (ongoing since 2019), and the
Pinkafeld Campus of Burgenland University of Applied Sciences
(ongoing since 2019). Text in English and German.
Vienna, 1900: the heart of the vast Austro-Hungarian Empire and a
city populated with people from across the Imperial territories -
stretching from central Europe to the Crown lands that reached far
into South-eastern Europe. This was a dynamic capital brimming with
economic and cultural prosperity; a centre that was fertile ground
for the revolutionary artistic practices that emerged at the end of
the 19th century and the backdrop to this fascinating new study.
Gustav Klimt's election as the first President of the Secession
Artists' Association in 1897 formalised the rejection of
conservatism and heralded a celebration of the innovative and the
modern. Alongside Klimt, Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka have been
championed as the key protagonists in the painting revolution that
re-defined the traditional genres of portrait, landscape and
allegory. However, this ignores the significant contribution made
by Koloman Moser whose painting is considered alongside that of
Klimt, Schiele and Kokoschka for the first time in this book.
Highlighting a decisive moment in the birth of modernity and
offering previously unpublished insight into the relationship of
Klimt, Schiele, Moser and Kokoschka from 1890 to 1918, this book,
with its wealth of stunning images, makes an invaluable
contribution to Secessionist scholarship and as such is essential
reading for anyone wishing to seek a fresh perspective on a
fascinating period in the history of art.
This book is the first comprehensive document to the complete works
of Josef Hoffmann. As a student of Otto Wagner, a founding member
of the Vienna Secession art movement (1897), a professor at the
Vienna School of Arts and Crafts (Kunstgewerbeschule) (1899-1936),
and co-founder of the Wiener Werkstatte cooperative (1903), the
Deutscher Werkbund association (1907) and the OEsterreichischer
Werkbund (1912), Hoffmann helped to cultivate a new model of
architectural and product design characterized by advanced
craftsmanship and artistic ambition. The book, which features more
than 40 illustrated essays by well-known experts on Hoffmann's most
significant buildings, interiors, exhibitions, and craft and
product design, covers all facets of his extensive oeuvre. Richly
illustrated, it includes a detailed biography and a comprehensive
documentation section, making this a new standard reference work.
The new Vienna headquarters of ÖAMTC, Austria's motorists'
association, emerged out of an interdisciplinary process from
choosing a suitable site to completion. Created in close
collaboration between the client, architects Pichler &
Traupmann, engineers FCP Fritsch, Chiari & Partner, and
strategic consultants M.O.O.CON together with Nofrontiere Design
agency and SIDE Studio for Information Design, it is a highly
innovative structure in terms of design and technology. Moreover,
the building sets new standards for corporate culture and working
environments. This new book tells the entire story of the new
ÖAMTC complex. It documents the project comprehensively and is
lavishly illustrated with images, plans, and diagrams. The essays
look at the project's complex genesis and architectural concept,
completed by interviews with the clients, architects, and with
users of and visitors to the building. A glance at the history of
comparable 'houses of speed' and a photo essay on the topic of
mobility round out this book on a unique and exemplary
multi-functional structure. Text in English and German.
Das Buch dokumentiert erstmals umfassend das Gesamtwerk Josef
Hoffmanns.
UEber 40
illustrierte Essays namhafter ExpertInnen zu den wichtigsten
Bauten, Interieurs, Ausstellungen, kunstgewerblichen Entwurfen und
Produkten stellen alle Sparten seines grossen OEuvres dar.
Grosszugige Bildstrecken, eine detaillierte Biografie und ein
umfassender Dokumentationsteil runden das Buch zu einem neuen
Standardwerk ab.
The catalogue for the exhibition at the MAK (Austrian Museum for
Applied Art/Contemporary Art in Vienna) focuses on two fundamental
approaches of the Moderne movement in an antithetic comparison,
including the preceding history and after-effects to this day:
Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956) and Adolf Loos (1870-1933) represent
opposing reactions to the basic problems of modern civilization,
which were triggered by the process of industrialization and
democratization. Two different concepts for a modern way of life
were created: Hoffmann promoted a comprehensive aestheticization of
all spheres of life, while Loos interpreted architecture and design
as the functional background for the development of individual
personalities. In 16 essays, well-known European and American
experts investigate a wide range of contributing conditions and the
highlights and consequences of these two traditions of the Moderne
movement, from the 19th century to the present. The key works of
Hoffmann and Loos - as well as those of their predecessors such as
Otto Wagner, and successors such as Josef Frank - are richly
illustrated.
Text in English and German. This book presents a selection from all
Tesar's creative periods and an essay introduces the background to
this art and its current positioning, which not least raises
theoretical questions about the relationship between pictorial art
and architecture. Tesar's drawings are presented as a project that
turns a vision of Modernism into reality within a manageable
personal sphere. The vision conjures up, as modern creative work is
condemned to becoming increasingly specialised, an alternative 'art
as a life practice', but -- and this is the present level of
perception -- one that can ultimately be realised only in
individual art projects.
