Das vorliegende Buch unternimmt weder eine transhistorische Rekonstruktion semiotischer Theoreme noch den Versuch ihrer Aktualisierung. Vielmehr will es den paradigmatischen Status von Lessings "Laokoon" fur eine Diskursgeschichte des Zeichens im 18. Jahrhundert herausarbeiten. Obgleich Lessing selbst es dezidiert ablehnt, von nicht-kunstlerischen Zeichenpraktiken zu handeln, sind seine Reflexionen nicht auf das Gebiet der Kunste zu beschranken. Intuition, Illusion, Evidenz oder das "bequeme Verhaltnis" von Bezeichnendem und Bezeichnetem sind vielmehr Effekte, die auch von Wissenschaften und sozialen Praktiken angestrebt werden. Whereas user-facing applications are often written in modern languages, the firmware, operating system, support libraries, and virtual machines that underpin just about any modern computer system are still written in low-level languages that value flexibility and performance over convenience and safety. Programming errors in low-level code are often exploitable and can, in the worst case, give adversaries unfettered access to the compromised host system. This book provides an introduction to and overview of automatic software diversity techniques that, in one way or another, use randomization to greatly increase the difficulty of exploiting the vast amounts of low-level code in existence. Diversity-based defenses are motivated by the observation that a single attack will fail against multiple targets with unique attack surfaces. We introduce the many, often complementary, ways that one can diversify attack surfaces and provide an accessible guide to more than two decades worth of research on the topic. We also discuss techniques used in conjunction with diversity to prevent accidental disclosure of randomized program aspects and present an in-depth case study of one of our own diversification solutions.

Eric Voegelin (1901–1985) is widely regarded as one of the greatest political philosophers of the 20th century, yet adequate understanding of his writings stands as a challenge for current and future generations. Voegelin’s thought continued to develop at a rapid pace during the last two decades of his life, and as Ellis Sandoz has written, his work found “not only its final but its most profound expression” during this period. Voegelin’s fame stemmed mostly from his many books and the laudatory review articles published in response to them, but he was “preeminently an essayist,” as Sandoz observes. Der Anteil von Kohlendioxid, welches 60% der durch die klimawirksamen Gase anthropogenen Ursprungs verursachten Storung ausmacht, hat mit etwa 380 parts per million den hochsten Wert seit 700.000 Jahren erreicht. Die Hauptquelle der Emissionen ist die Energieversorgung auf Basis der fossilen Brennstoffe Kohle, Erdgas und Erdol. In Deutschland sind mehr als 90% der Emissionen des wichtigsten Treibhausgases Kohlendioxid energiebedingt, etwa 45% entstehen allein in der Energiewirtschaft.
