Sacred Stories, Spiritual Tribes - Finding Religion in Everyday Life (Hardcover, New): Nancy Tatom Ammerman Sacred Stories, Spiritual Tribes - Finding Religion in Everyday Life (Hardcover, New)
Nancy Tatom Ammerman
R4,099 Discovery Miles 40 990 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Nancy Tatom Ammerman examines the stories Americans tell of their everyday lives, from dinner table to office and shopping mall to doctor's office, about the things that matter most to them and the routines they take for granted, and the times and places where the everyday and ordinary meet the spiritual. In addition to interviews and observation, Ammerman bases her findings on a photo elicitation exercise and oral diaries, offering a window into the presence and absence of religion and spirituality in ordinary lives and in ordinary physical and social spaces. The stories come from a diverse array of ninety-five Americans - both conservative and liberal Protestants, African American Protestants, Catholics, Jews, Mormons, Wiccans, and people who claim no religious or spiritual proclivities - across a range that stretches from committed religious believers to the spiritually neutral. Ammerman surveys how these people talk about what spirituality is, how they seek and find experiences they deem spiritual, and whether and how religious traditions and institutions are part of their spiritual lives.

Offers an overarching definition and framework for the study of religion as it manifests itself in everyday life Look around you as you walk down the street; somewhere, usually hidden in plain sight, there will be traces of religion. Perhaps it is the person who walks past with a Christian tattoo or a Muslim hijab. Perhaps it is the poster announcing a charity auction at the local synagogue. Or perhaps you open your Instagram feed to see what inspiring images and meditations have been posted by spiritual guides to help start the day. Studying Lived Religion examines religious practices wherever they happen-both within religious spaces and in everyday life. Although the study of lived religion has been around for over two decades, there has not been an agreed-upon definition of what it encompasses, and we have lacked a sociological theory to frame the way it is studied. This book offers a definition that expands lived religion's geographic scope and a framework of seven dimensions around which we can analyze lived religious practice. Examples from multiple traditions and disciplines show the range of methods available for such studies, offering practical tips for how to begin. The volume opens up how we understand the category of lived religion, erasing the artificial divide between what happens in congregations and other religious institutions and what happens in other settings. Nancy Tatom Ammerman draws on examples ranging from Singapore to Accra to Chicago to show how deeply religion permeates everyday lives. In revealing the often overlooked ways that religion shapes human experience, she invites us all into new ways of seeing the world around us.

Work, Family and Religion in Contemporary Society - Remaking Our Lives (Paperback): Nancy Tatom Ammerman, Wade Clark Roof Work, Family and Religion in Contemporary Society - Remaking Our Lives (Paperback)

Until recently, religious institutions have been organized to suit the traditional American family, where the wife stayed at home, caring for children. "Work, Family and Religion in Contemporary Society" discusses how churches and synagogues today are beginning to adapt to the reality of the American family: dual-career marriages, high levels of divorce, interfaith marriages, partnerships that may not be marriages. Religious organizations must serve families that don't fall into the "Ozzie and Harriet" mold.
The first group of papers in this edited volume documents changing trends in the connection between religion, work, and the family. As families change, as more women enter the paid work force, and as more people advocate individualism and feminist principles, a barrier grows between families and organized religion. Traditional families still feel tied to conventional religious participation, but people committed to new patterns of family and work are looking for alternatives.
In the second part of the book, we see how changing families and flexible congregations are experimenting with new forms of religious life. Many religious organizations have started day care centers, are hospitable to women clergy, have changed to inclusive language, and alter their weekly schedules. African-American churches are tying work and family to religion, while dealing with both the "truly disadvantaged" and the black middle class which may feel alienated from the church. Other examples of special efforts include groups at the margins of institutional religious life: Catholics who meet without a priest, house church groups, and even further outside organized religion, Limina, a group offormer Catholic women who draw on ancient rituals to celebrate women. In this book, we see how non-traditional families are turning away from religion as they have known it, but are creating new spiritual patterns.

Pillars of Faith - American Congregations and Their Partners (Paperback): Nancy Tatom Ammerman Pillars of Faith - American Congregations and Their Partners (Paperback)

At the close of the twentieth century the United States was, by all accounts, among the most religious of modern Western nations. Pillars of Faith describes the diversity of tradition and the commonality of organizational strategy that characterize the more than 300,000 congregations in the United States, arguing that they provide the social bonds, spiritual traditions, and community connections that are vital to an increasingly diverse society. Nancy Tatom Ammerman follows several traditions--Mainline Protestant, Conservative Protestant, African American Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox, Jewish, Sectarian, and other religions--as they establish discernible patterns of congregational life that fit their own history, tradition, and relationship to American society. Her methodologically sophisticated study balances survey research with interviews conducted with people from ninety-one different religious traditions and ethnographic observations that yield new information on many dimensions of American congregational life. Her book is the first to depict the complex resource base supporting American congregations, the enormous web of partners with whom congregations work, and the range of institutional patterns they exhibit. Contrary to many gloomy forecasts, Pillars of Faith: American Congregations and Their Partners argues that organized religion in the United States is robust and vigorous--and that it can handle the increasing demands of escalating diversity and mobility the future is sure to bring.

This handbook for seminarians and clergy professionals places the congregation itself, rather than individual scholarly disciplines, at the center of congregational analysis. Using a comprehensive systems approach to congregations, this volume enables readers to analyze the ministries, stories, and processes that are at work in congregations. It provides techniques for studying the congregation as well as a framework for understanding the nature of the congregation.
