Michael Herz, Eva Katz, Benjamin Maoz, Stanley Rabinowitz
R2,900 Discovery Miles 29 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

One of the most exciting medical developments during the past thirty years has been the rebirth of family medicine as a dynamic specialty. In the face of ever-widening definitions of health, the family physician has been challenged to integrate the physical, emotional, and social concepts of modern medicine into traditional medical services. Invariably, in establishing a mutual understanding between doctor and patient, the doctor's emotions come into play.

This book addresses the needs of family and other physicians to better understand their emotions, enhance their self-awareness, improve their communications skills, and apply these skills more effectively within the constraints of clinical practice and teaching. A multi-disciplinary approach common to the practice of family medicine is used. The authors come from a variety of disciplines--psychiatry, clinical psychology, family medicine, and family therapy.

R6,098 Discovery Miles 60 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

EMU - A Swedish Perspective provides a comprehensive and up-to-date survey of the EMU project. The main advantages and disadvantages of a single currency are evaluated. A key feature of the analysis is the attempt to integrate economic and political aspects. The book is a revised version of the report by the Swedish Government Commission on the EMU. Although the analysis focuses on the consequences for Sweden of joining versus not joining the monetary union, it is highly relevant for the discussion in all EU countries. The book provides an in-depth analysis of how the demands on economic policy will be affected by the monetary union. Various chapters discuss monetary policy and inflation, fiscal policy, unemployment and labour markets, the transition to monetary union, and the exchange-rate arrangements between participants and non-participants. Other chapters analyse the importance of the EMU for European political integration, democratic aspects, and how membership in the monetary union will affect the possibilities for an individual member state to exert influence within the EU. EMU - A Swedish Perspective should be of interest to professional economists and political scientists, students, and all others who want to form an opinion about the monetary union on the basis of a balanced assessment of the consequences. Post-Occupancy Evaluation (Routledge Revivals) (Hardcover): Wolfgang F.E. Preiser, Edward White, Harvey Rabinowitz Post-Occupancy Evaluation (Routledge Revivals) (Hardcover)
Wolfgang F.E. Preiser, Edward White, Harvey Rabinowitz
R4,733 Discovery Miles 47 330 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Post-occupancy evaluation, focusing on building's occupants and their needs, provides insight into the consequences of past design decisions and forms a sound basis for creating better buildings in the future. This book, first published in 1988, includes a review of the evolution of the field, a conceptual frame-work for POE, and pragmatic information on planning, conducting, and reporting POEs. Post-Occupancy Evaluation categorizes the approaches to building evaluation by describing the three levels of POE effort - indicative, investigative, and diagnostic, each differing in terms of time, resources, and personnel needed. In its scope Post-Occupancy Evaluation is both comprehensive and specific; professionals in the design and planning disciplines will find it an invaluable resource for understanding the theory behind POE's and the procedures needed to put the theory into practice.

- equations of SchrAdinger, Maxwell, Navier-Stokes, Bernoulli-Euler, Seiberg-Witten, Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg;
- existence, uniqueness and multiplicity of solutions;
- critical Sobolev growth and connected phenomena;
- qualitative properties, regularity and shape of solutions;
- inequalities, a-priori estimates and asymptotic behavior;
- various applications to models such as asymptotic membranes, nonlinear plates and inhomogeneous fluids.
The contributions of so many distinguished mathematicians to this volume document the importance and lasting influence of the mathematical research of Djairo de Figueiredo. The book thus is a source of new ideas and results and should appeal to graduate students and mathematicians interested in nonlinear problems.

Social Change Philanthrophy in America (Hardcover, New): Alan Rabinowitz Social Change Philanthrophy in America (Hardcover, New)
Alan Rabinowitz
R2,902 Discovery Miles 29 020 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Alan Rabinowitz provides the first comprehensive analysis of the nontraditional or social change philanthropists who help finance national campaigns and grassroots organizations that focus on improving American society and the environment, particularly for minority and low-income people. Written both for funders and grantees already in the field and those just beginning to fund nontraditional activities, "Social Change Philanthropy in America" examines the experience, operational practices, and future prospects of philanthropists who have been involved in such activities over the past thirty years. Rabinowitz offers new insights into who the funders are and how they think, how funders actually make decisions, what types of grants are made, and the tax, political, and historical aspects of social change funding and its role in America's philanthropic system.

Beginning with an introduction to the network of progressive social change funders and grantees and the philanthropic universe within which they operate, Rabinowitz goes on to analyze the flow of dollars through the nonprofit system. The next two sections present detailed portraits of social change funders and grantees. In part four, the author discusses whether grants for progressive social change are effective and worthwhile, whether grantees are sufficiently accountable, and whether funders and grantees are meeting each other's needs. He then explores progressive funding as an arena of controversy, conflicting ideologies, and, ultimately, electoral politics. The final chapter looks at challenges and prospects for the progressive social change community as strategies for organizing, campaigning, and fundraising are developed for the future. The appendix illustrates in more detail the range and substance of the field for readers with little previous knowledge of progressive social change philanthropy.

Land Investment and the Predevelopment Process - A Guide for Finance and Real Estate Professionals (Hardcover): Alan Rabinowitz Land Investment and the Predevelopment Process - A Guide for Finance and Real Estate Professionals (Hardcover)
Alan Rabinowitz
R2,936 Discovery Miles 29 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides a thorough guide to the issues to be resolved to minimize risks and maximize private and public rewards for land development projects. The author fully explores the strategic considerations involved in selecting the right piece of land and in obtaining the necessary building approvals. The author investigates the impacts of economic conditions, federal programs, demographic and income-related trends, state and local policies, land use controls, and urban sprawl on the predevelopment process. "Recent Publications on Governmental ProblemS"

This is the first comprehensive examination of land investment at the predevelopment stage--when undeveloped land is converted into developable properties. This book provides a thorough guide to the issues to be resolved to minimize risks and maximize private and public rewards for land development projects. Rabinowitz fully explores the strategic considerations involved in selecting the right piece of land and in obtaining the necessary building approvals. He underscores the importance of a cooperative relationship between investor-developers and regulatory officials in an era of high land prices and increasingly complex permitting procedures. He investigates the impacts of economic conditions, federal programs, demographic and income-related trends, state and local policies, land use controls, and urban sprawl on the predevelopment process. In the last chapter Rabinowitz presents a cogent analysis of land prices and values at the predevelopment stage. Numerous tables, charts, and suggested readings amplify the discussion.

Objects of Love and Regret - A Brooklyn Story (Hardcover): Richard Rabinowitz Objects of Love and Regret - A Brooklyn Story (Hardcover)
Richard Rabinowitz
R915 R714 Discovery Miles 7 140 Save R201 (22%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

An award-winning historian and museum curator tells the story of his Jewish immigrant family by lovingly reconstructing its dramatic encounters with the memory-filled objects of ordinary life. At a pushcart stall in East New York, Brooklyn, in the spring of 1934, eighteen-year-old Sarah Schwartz bought her mother, Shenka, a green, wooden-handled bottle opener. Decades later, Sarah would tear up telling her son Richard, "Your bubbe always worked so hard. Twenty cents, it cost me." How could that unremarkable item, and others like it, reveal the untold history of a Jewish immigrant family, their chances and their choices over the course of an eventful century? By unearthing the personal meaning and historical significance of simple everyday objects, Richard Rabinowitz offers an intimate portrait connecting Sarah, Shenka, and the rest of his family to the twentieth-century transformations of American life. During the Depression, Sarah-born on a Polish battlefield in World War I, scarred by pogroms, pressed too early into adult responsibilities-receives a gift of French perfume, her fiance Dave's response to the stigma of poverty. Later we watch Dave load folding chairs into his car for a state-park outing, signaling both the postwar detachment from city life and his own escape from failures to be a good "provider" for those he loves. Objects of Love and Regret is closely wedded to the lives of American Jewish immigrants and their children, yet Rabinowitz invites all of us to contemplate the material world that anchors our own memories. Beautifully written, absorbing, and emotionally vivid, this is a memoir that brings us back to the striving, the dreams, the successes, and the tragedies that are part of every family's story.

R709 Discovery Miles 7 090 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume focuses on teaching Classics in carceral contexts in the US and offers an overview of the range of incarcerated adults, their circumstances, and the ways in which they are approaching and reinterpreting Greek and Roman texts. Classics and Prison Education in the US examines how different incarcerated adults – male, female, or gender non-conforming; young or old; serving long sentences or about to be released – are reading and discussing Classical texts, and what this may entail. Moreover, it provides a sophisticated examination of the best pedagogical practices for teaching in a prison setting and for preparing returning citizens, as well as a considered discussion of the possible dangers of engaging in such teaching – whether because of the potential complicity with the carceral state, or because of the historical position of Classics in elitist education. This edited volume will be a resource for those interested in Classics pedagogy, as well as the role that Classics can play in different areas of society and education, and the impact it can have.

Amanda VandeHei-Carter, Nayelee Villanueva, Christine Clark; Contributions by Jeannette Driscoll Alarcon, Benjamin Francisco, …
R3,037 Discovery Miles 30 370 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book focuses on multicultural curriculum transformation in literacy and language arts subject areas. The discussion of each area outlines critical considerations for multicultural curriculum transformation for the area by grade level and then by eight organizing tools, including content standards, relationships with and among students and their families, and evaluation of student learning and teaching effectiveness. The volume is designed to speak with PK-12 teachers as colleagues in the multicultural curriculum transformation work. Readers are exposed to "things to think about," but also given curricular examples to work with or from in going about the actual, concrete work of curriculum change. This work supports PK-12 teachers to independently multiculturally adapt existing curriculum, to create new multicultural curriculum differentiated by content areas and grade levels, and by providing ample examples of what such multicultural transformed literacy and language arts curricula looks like in practice.

Bargaining on Nuclear Tests - Washington and its Cold War Deals (Hardcover): Or Rabinowitz Bargaining on Nuclear Tests - Washington and its Cold War Deals (Hardcover)
Or Rabinowitz
R3,116 Discovery Miles 31 160 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Most observers who follow nuclear history agree on one major aspect regarding Israel's famous policy of nuclear ambiguity; mainly that it is an exception. More specifically, it is largely accepted that the 1969 Nixon-Meir understanding, which formally established Israel's policy of nuclear ambiguity and transformed it from an undeclared Israeli strategy into a long-lasting undisclosed bilateral agreement, was in fact a singularity, aimed at allowing Washington to turn a blind eye to the existence of an Israeli arsenal. According to conventional wisdom, this nuclear bargain was a foreign policy exception on behalf of Washington, an exception which reflected a relationship growing closer and warmer between the superpower leading the free world and its small Cold War associate. Contrary to the orthodox narrative, this research demonstrates that this was not the case. The 1969 bargain was not, in fact, an exception, but rather the first of three Cold War era deals on nuclear tests brokered by Washington with its Cold War associates, the other two being Pakistan and South Africa. These two deals are not well known and until now were discussed and explored in the literature in a very limited fashion. Bargaining on Nuclear Tests places the role of nuclear tests by American associates, as well as Washington's attempts to prevent and delay them, at the heart of a new nuclear history narrative.

Mitchell Rabinowitz
R1,159 Discovery Miles 11 590 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume presents and discusses current research that makes the connection between cognitive theory and instructional application. Addressing two general issues, the first set of chapters specifies the relation between cognitive theory and the development and evaluation of instruction, while the second set deals with the questions involved in understanding and assessing cognitive skills. The outstanding feature of these chapters is that they all present in-depth discussions of the theoretical issues underlying instructional decisions. Many present specific implementations that provide examples of concrete applications of theory. In addition, the settings for implementing these examples span a broad range of instructional areas and environments, illustrating the generality and transferability of the application of theory to practice.

Parkett No. 79 Jon Kessler, Marilyn Minter and Albert Oehlen (Paperback, 2007 ed.): Cay Sophie Rabinowitz Parkett No. 79 Jon Kessler, Marilyn Minter and Albert Oehlen (Paperback, 2007 ed.)
Cay Sophie Rabinowitz; Text written by Mark Godfrey; Glenn O'Brien; Text written by Katy Siegel, Paul Bonaventura, …
R817 Discovery Miles 8 170 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Volume 79 of the influential international art journal "Parkett" features Jon Kessler, Marilyn Minter and Albert Oehlen. In the tinkered gadgetry of Kessler's retro sci-fi installations, we peek through surveillance cameras to see our own image among his analog programs crammed with detritus of all kinds. Kessler's vista of (d)evolved cyberstuff is in a manic state of accumulation, as this data-diving artist masters the ecology of pure information. Within Marilyn Minter's fetishistic, flawless pictures, we find a painter obsessed with the clear articulation of magnified sweat beads and pore-smeared glitter. In each successive lip-smacking painting, Minter sets out to perfect beauty's disguise, affirming both her pleasure in fashion imagery, and an appreciation of its vulgar mishaps--say, a drag queen's eyelashes clumped together with too much mascara. According to essayist John Kelsey, Albert Oehlen's collage-paintings "seem almost bored of their own shock-value." And yet this artist, one of the most significant German painters of the past 20 years, can make boredom look like a rigorous, if not delirious experiment. Also featured: Spencer Finch, Gelitin and Mark Wallinger, as well as essayists Paul Bonaventura, Mark Godfrey, Glenn O'Brien, Katy Siegel, Andrea Scott and Pamela Lee, to name a few.

Judaic Spiritual Psychotherapy (Paperback): Aaron Rabinowitz Judaic Spiritual Psychotherapy (Paperback)
Aaron Rabinowitz
R1,089 Discovery Miles 10 890 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Judaic Spiritual Psychotherapy is in the contemporary mode of utilizing the profound insights present in spiritual literature for psychotherapeutic use. Jewish spiritual writings are a rich source that encompasses three thousand years of scholarship and experience dealing with emotional problems. These insights can benefit all clients, not only those nurtured in the Jewish tradition. A whole range of topics include an introduction and history of this modern trend. The basic principles of this approach are clearly defined, and case histories are presented to further refine and clarify the method. In addition, meditation -- including some of its methods and basic, guiding principles -- is analyzed from a Jewish point of view. The topic of forgiveness and its relevance to psychotherapy is presented through the analysis of Simon Wiesenthal's The Sunflower, in which he discusses the morality of forgiving a dying SS soldier for his part in murdering Jews during World War II. Several prominent moral and religious authorities express their views, helping to clarify the role of forgiveness in the fabric of interpersonal relationships. The book concludes with a discussion of the place of values in the process of psychotherapy.

Howard K. Rabinowitz
R1,754 Discovery Miles 17 540 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Medical students lack role models in rural primary care, contributing to the shortage of family care physicians in rural areas. This book addresses that need by profiling graduates from the Physician Shortage Area Program (PSAP) of Jefferson Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University, who now practice rural family medicine. The text challenges pre-med undergraduates, medical students, and family physicians to consider rural family practice and is an excellent resource for pre-med and medical school advisors. In-depth profiles reveal the everyday reality of the physician shortage through poignant stories and candid dialogue. They cover the social and professional issues that rural family physicians face, highlighting topics such as the meaning of rural family practice, the roles of medical schools and hospitals, health care policy, rural obstetrics, and telemedicine. The concluding chapter summarizes the professional and personal lessons learned and outlines the future of rural family practice.
