Survival analysis is a highly active area of research with
applications spanning the physical, engineering, biological, and
social sciences. In addition to statisticians and biostatisticians,
researchers in this area include epidemiologists, reliability
engineers, demographers and economists. The economists survival
analysis by the name of duration analysis and the analysis of
transition data. We attempted to bring together leading
researchers, with a common interest in developing methodology in
survival analysis, at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop. The
research works collected in this volume are based on the
presentations at the Workshop. Analysis of survival experiments is
complicated by issues of censoring, where only partial observation
of an individual's life length is available and left truncation,
where individuals enter the study group if their life lengths
exceed a given threshold time. Application of the theory of
counting processes to survival analysis, as developed by the
Scandinavian School, has allowed for substantial advances in the
procedures for analyzing such experiments. The increased use of
computer intensive solutions to inference problems in survival
analysis~ in both the classical and Bayesian settings, is also
evident throughout the volume. Several areas of research have
received special attention in the volume.
Handbook of Survival Analysis presents modern techniques and
research problems in lifetime data analysis. This area of
statistics deals with time-to-event data that is complicated by
censoring and the dynamic nature of events occurring in time. With
chapters written by leading researchers in the field, the handbook
focuses on advances in survival analysis techniques, covering
classical and Bayesian approaches. It gives a complete overview of
the current status of survival analysis and should inspire further
research in the field. Accessible to a wide range of readers, the
book provides: An introduction to various areas in survival
analysis for graduate students and novices A reference to modern
investigations into survival analysis for more established
researchers A text or supplement for a second or advanced course in
survival analysis A useful guide to statistical methods for
analyzing survival data experiments for practicing statisticians
This literally "refreshing" collection is based on the notion that
the future of bioethics is inseparable from its past. Seminal works
provide a unique and relatively unexplored vehicle for
investigating not only where bioethics began, but where it may be
going as well. In this volume, a number of the pioneers in
bioethics - Tom Beauchamp, Lisa Sowle Cahill, James Childress,
Charles E. Curran, Patricia King, H. Tristram Engelhardt, William
F. May, Edmund D. Pellegrino, Warren Reich, Robert Veatch and LeRoy
Walters - reflect on their early work and how they fit into the
past and future of bioethics. Coming from many disciplines,
generations, and perspectives, these trailblazing authors provide a
broad overview of the history and current state of the field.
Invaluable to anyone with a serious interest in the development and
future of bioethics, at a time when new paths into medical
questions are made almost daily, "The Story of Bioethics" is a
Baedeker beyond compare.

Praise for A Passion for Giving "Klein and Berrie have produced a
great book that manages to make complex issues simple. It blends
with grace and craft the deep with the practical and the concrete
with the philosophical. It is a precious tool for both the neophyte
and the experienced philanthropist. It is both a useful manual and
a profound exploration of the core values of giving. In a word,
this book is a true gift." Andres Spokoiny, President and CEO,
Jewish Funders Network "Through the years, many people have asked
us why we set up our family foundation and how we went about
accomplishing this goal. The 'why' is easy to answer: we are
fortunate enough to be able to give back and help others in need.
The 'how' is perfectly explained in this compelling and very
informative book by Peter Klein and Angelica Berrie." Marilyn and
Barry Rubenstein, The Marilyn and Barry Rubenstein Family
Foundation "This book should be required reading for new donors and
experienced philanthropists. Klein and Berrie have crafted a
winning combination of practical guidelines and heartfelt personal
accounts to create a moving call to action for anyone who wishes to
give back. The stories remind us that when philanthropy, an
intensely personal journey, is coupled with deep learning,
transformation occurs for both the recipient and the donor." Debra
Mesch, PhD, Professor and Director, Women's Philanthropy Institute,
IUPUI "I wish I could have had this book to guide me and refer to
as my wife, Andrea, and I launched our Harbor Glow Foundation a
decade ago. We would have been much more efficient in the process
and more focused in our direction from the get-go. Peter and
Angelica capture the spirit and nitty-gritty of a family
foundation." Michael Leeds, Co-Chair, Harbor Glow Foundation
This book provides an in-depth analysis of representations of
female murderers in modern American drama. Paying close attention
to the plays' plot, form, and style, the study seeks to come to
terms with the dramatic and cultural function of this phenomenon.
Given the rarity of female murder in real life, the popularity and
prevalence of this theme in culture is striking and unsettling at
the same time. After all, a woman who kills not only violates
against basic social rules, but also upsets gender norms. This
potential to break with an ideology that rests on hierarchically
structured gender binaries equips the figure of the female murderer
with the power to symbolically 'kill' established views about
gender and sexuality. It is this ideologically disruptive potential
that makes the female murderer a fascinating object of study, as
her cultural figuration may provide information about the meaning
assigned to women at a certain historical moment.
Tame your toddler with seven key shifts in mindset that will help
you parent with clarity, calmness, and self-control Through stories
from her practice, Claire Lerner shows parents how making critical
mindshifts—seeing their children’s behaviors through a new lens
—empowers parents to solve their most vexing childrearing
challenges. This process puts parents back in the driver’s seat,
where they belong and where their children need them to be. These
real life stories provide a roadmap for how to tune into the root
causes of children’s behavior and how to create and implement
strategies that are tailored to the unique needs of each child and
family. Through these stories, Claire provides a treasure trove of
practical solutions that are based in science and which work in
real life. Why Is My Child In Charge? picks up where other books
have left parents hanging. Most parenting books offer solutions
that sound good on paper but don’t work in practice. They are
aspirational rather than achievable, or they offer
one-size-fits-all approaches that don’t meet the needs of an
individual child. They can compound parents’ feelings of
frustration and thus, can be counterproductive. Case by case,
Claire unpacks the individualized process she guides parents
through to solve the most common challenges such as throwing
tantrums in public; delaying bedtime for hours; refusing to
participate in family mealtimes; and resisting potty training.
Employing a relatable story-telling approach, Claire elucidates:
The faulty mindsets that pose obstacles to parents seeing the
situation more objectively The essential mindshifts that enable
parents to quickly identify the root causes of the problem The
Development of an action plan tailored to each unique child and
family Why is My Child in Charge? Is like having a child
development specialist in your home. It shows how you can develop
“win-win” strategies that translate into adaptable, happy kids
and calm, connected and in-control parents. It will help you be the
parent you want to be.

Applied statisticians in many fields must frequently analyze time
to event data. While the statistical tools presented in this book
are applicable to data from medicine, biology, public health,
epidemiology, engineering, economics, and demography, the focus
here is on applications of the techniques to biology and medicine.
The analysis of survival experiments is complicated by issues of
censoring, where an individual's life length is known to occur only
in a certain period of time, and by truncation, where individuals
enter the study only if they survive a sufficient length of time or
individuals are included in the study only if the event has
occurred by a given date. The use of counting process methodology
has allowed for substantial advances in the statistical theory to
account for censoring and truncation in survival experiments. This
book makes these complex methods more accessible to applied
researchers without an advanced mathematical background. The
authors present the essence of these techniques, as well as
classical techniques not based on counting processes, and apply
them to data. Practical suggestions for implementing the various
methods are set off in a series of Practical Notes at the end of
each section. Technical details of the derivation of the techniques
are sketched in a series of Technical Notes. This book will be
useful for investigators who need to analyze censored or truncated
life time data, and as a textbook for a graduate course in survival
analysis. The prerequisite is a standard course in statistical
methodology.
Pathologen in Deutschland.

In our increasingly technological society, improving students'
performance in mathematics and science has become a critical
challenge. During the 1990s, the National Science Foundation funded
a series of Systemic Initiatives designed to change the way these
subjects are being taught in schools throughout the country. These
initiatives sought to align all aspects of the educational system
in support of ambitious curriculum and performance standards, with
particular emphasis on teacher training and professional
development to promote effective changes in instructional practice.
