Burning Women - Widows, Witches, and Early Modern European Travelers in India (Hardcover, 2003 ed.): P. Banerjee Burning Women - Widows, Witches, and Early Modern European Travelers in India (Hardcover, 2003 ed.)
P. Banerjee
R1,612 Discovery Miles 16 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In early modern Europe, the circulation of visual and verbal transmissions of sati, or Hindu widowburning, not only informed responses to the ritualized violence of Hindu culture, but also intersected in fascinating ways with specifically European forms of ritualized violence and European constructions of gender ideology. European accounts of women being burned in India uncannily commented on the burnings of women as witches and criminal wives in Europe. When Europeans narrated their accounts of sati, perhaps the most striking illustration of Hindu patriarchal violence, they did not specifically connect the act of widowburning to a corresponding European signifier: the gruesome ceremonial burnings of women as witches. In examining early modern representations of sati, the book focuses specifically on those strategies that enabled European travelers to protect their own identity as uniquely civilized amidst spectacular displays of "Eastern barbarity."

Advances in Human Resource Management in Asia (Hardcover, New): P. Banerjee, X. Li, F. Richter, John B. Kidd Advances in Human Resource Management in Asia (Hardcover, New)
P. Banerjee, X. Li, F. Richter, John B. Kidd
R3,031 Discovery Miles 30 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Human resource management performs a different function and operates very differently in Asia than it does in the US and Europe. This volume demonstrates how human resource management is enacted in Asian countries, how it is changing in response to recent economic events, and how firms are linking indigenous and external human resource management learning. Examples are taken from firms in Japan, China, Korea and Thailand. Contributors with perspectives from both the East and the West show how multinational firms can incorporate Asian thinking and acting into a modern business strategy for successful human resource development in international ventures.

The Knowledge Economy in India (Hardcover, 2003 ed.): F. Richter, P. Banerjee The Knowledge Economy in India (Hardcover, 2003 ed.)
F. Richter, P. Banerjee
R3,023 Discovery Miles 30 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book investigates the rise of entrepreneurship and knowledge management in India. It looks at the high-tech sector, how it is at present, and its prospects for growth (using Motorola as a case study). It then goes on to analyze the effect that the knowledge economy will have on labor, business strategy, and corporate restructuring and highlights the challenges that India will face.

The Indian Software Industry - Business Strategy and Dynamic Co-ordination (Hardcover, 2004 ed.): P. Banerjee The Indian Software Industry - Business Strategy and Dynamic Co-ordination (Hardcover, 2004 ed.)
P. Banerjee
R3,031 Discovery Miles 30 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Indian software industry has rapidly grown over the past decade, and most of this growth has been derived from exports to the US market. This book deals with business models, particularly the way the unique software model in India has evolved. It focuses on manpower resources in the software industry and knowledge diffusion through job switching, and the resulting impacts on business strategy.

Computational Methods for Electromagnetic and Optical Systems (Paperback, 2nd edition): John M. Jarem, Partha P. Banerjee Computational Methods for Electromagnetic and Optical Systems (Paperback, 2nd edition)
John M. Jarem, Partha P. Banerjee
R2,655 Discovery Miles 26 550 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The current rapid and complex advancement applications of electromagnetic (EM) and optical systems calls for a much needed update on the computational methods currently in use. Completely revised and reflecting ten years of develoments, this second edition of the bestselling Computational Methods for Electromagnetic and Optical Systems provides the update so desperately needed in this field. Offering a wealth of new material, this second edition begins with scalar wave propagation and analysis techniques, chiral and metamaterials, and photonic band gap structures. It examines Pontying vector and stored energy, as well as energy, group, and phase velocities; reviews k-space state variable formation with applications to anistropic planar systems; and presents full-field rigorous coupled wave analysis of planar diffraction gratings with applications to H-mode, E-mode, crossed gratings, single and multilayered diffraction grating analysis, and diffraction from anistropic gratings. Later chapters highlight spectral techniques and RCWA as applied to the analysis of dynamic wave-mixing in PR materials with induced transmission and reflection gratings and demonstrate the RCWA algorithm to analyze cylindrical and spherical systems using circular, bipolar cylindrical, and spherical coordinates. The book concludes with several RCWA computational case studies involving scattering from spatially inhomogeneous eccentric circular cylinders, solved in bipolar coordinates. Many of these examples apply the complex Poynting theorem or the forwardscattering (optical) theorem to validate numerical solutions by verifying power conservation. Using common computational tools such as Fortran, MATLAB, COMSOL, and RSOFT, the text offers numerous examples to illuminate the material, many of which employ a full-field vector approach to analyze and solve Maxwell's equations in anisotropic media where a standard wave equation approach is intractable. Designed to introduce novel spectral computational techniques, the book demonstrates the application of these methods to analyze a variety of EM and optical systems.

India has realised, later than many other nations, that in order to prosper in the new world economy it will need to successfully manage its knowledge assets. This book investigates the rise of entrepreneurship and knowledge management. It looks at the high tech sector, how it is at present and it's prospects for growth. It then goes onto analyse the effect that the knowledge economy will have on labour, business strategy and corporate restructuring and highlights the challenges that India will face, not least whether it can offer enough employment potential for 1 billion people.

Thin Film Nanophotonics: Conclusions from the Third International Workshop on Thin Films for Electronics, Electro-Optics, Energy and Sensors (TFE3S) provides up-to-date coverage of the properties and photonic applications of nanostructured thin films, including discussions on optical waveguides, photonic lattices for wideband reflectors, polarizers, bandpass filters, meta surfaces, plasmonic resonance sensors, smart windows, optical switches, photovoltaics, and many more. This is an important reference source for materials scientists, engineers and physicists working in the areas of nanomaterials and photonics. New thin film applications such as thin-film topological insulators and 2D materials are gaining attention and growing exponentially, hence this book is an ideal reference on how engineered thin films for various nano-photonics applications present exponential growth in a wide array of areas.
