For any organization to perform and compete successfully, it
must have the systems and processes in place to translate goals
into achievable actions-and to measure and monitor results.
Moreover, the organization must be able to adjust and adapt as
market conditions, technologies, the competitive environment,
government regulations, personnel, and other variables evolve,
sometimes gradually and sometimes dramatically.
In Delivering Results: Measuring What Matters, Babson College
professors and management consultants, Lawrence Carr and Alfred
Nanni, show managers how to avoid the common pitfalls and mistakes
when setting corporate strategy, and instead create a management
system-unique to their organization-that aligns internal resources
with objectives, motivates and rewards employees, and continuously
provides feedback. Illustrating their concepts with numerous
real-life examples (both successes and failures), practical tools
and models, and a glossary of key terms, the authors demonstrate
that knowing how to create and direct management systems that
deliver results is, in itself, a strategic resource.
A new edition of the popular introductory text on the phonological
structure of present-day English. A clear and accessible
introductory text on the phonological structure of the English
language, English Phonetics and Phonology is an ideal text for
those with no prior knowledge of the subject. This market-leading
textbook teaches undergraduate students and non-native English
speakers the fundamentals of articulatory phonetics and phonology
in an engaging, easy-to-understand style. Rigorously expanded to
include new materials on first and second language acquisition of
English phonetics and phonology, this third edition, English
Phonetics and Phonology boasts two new chapters on first-language
and second-language acquisition of English phonetics and phonology.
By introducing topics such as the mental lexicon and the emergence
of phonological rules and representations, and graphophonemic
problems in L2 acquisition, these two new chapters have been added
to afford greater flexibility for teachers and increased support
for non-native English speakers. Expanded website content includes
exercise-linked sound files. Based on the author's 34 years of
teaching English Phonetics and Phonology in the UK and France
Includes coverage of various accents in English and second-language
acquisition Hugely successful textbook for the introductory
Phonetics course, now in its third edition References and exercises
across all chapters to guide students throughout the work Provides
access to companion website for additional learning tools, sound
files, and instructor resources English Phonetics and Phonology is
an indispensable resource for undergraduate students in courses on
Phonetics and Phonology with no prior knowledge of theoretical
linguistics and non-native English speakers alike.

When President George W Bush came into office in January 2001, he
arrived from a campaign in which he had emphasised efficiency in
government, particularly through the use of information technology,
but had not revealed any plans for reorganising the executive
branch. Then in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terrorist
attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the
organisation of the federal government for maintaining homeland
security and combating terrorism became an important consideration
for both the President and the 107th Congress. Establishment of the
Office of Homeland Security in October 2001 as a co-ordinating
entity as an important first step, followed by the President's June
6, 2002 call for the creation of a Department of Homeland Security.
This book regards reorganisation and management as involving the
alteration of the program administrative structure and operations
of the executive branch for reasons of efficiency, economy and
direction.
