Myron P Gutmann, Glenn D. Deane, Emily R. Merchant, Kenneth M. Sylvester
R3,020 Discovery Miles 30 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Navigating Time and Space in Population Studies presents innovative approaches to long-standing questions about the diffusion of population and demographic behavior across space and over time. This collection utilizes newly-available historical data along with spatially and temporally explicit analytical methods to evaluate and refine core demographic theories and to pose new questions about mortality and fertility transitions, migration, urbanization, and social inequality. It adds a spatial dimension to the analysis of temporal processes and a temporal element to spatial processes. Chapters cover a broad range of geographical settings, including the United States, Europe, Latin America, and the Islamic world, and span time periods from the eighteenth to twentieth century. Contributors from a variety of disciplines reveal the complexity of factors involved in population processes that spread across space and unfold over time, and demonstrate a rich set of tools with which to explore, analyze, and test the spatial and temporal dynamics of these phenomena. The theories, methods, and substantive findings presented here provide new lenses through which to view time and space in population studies, offering useful models and valuable insights to demographers and other social scientists exploring both historical and contemporary questions about population dynamics anywhere in the world.

Superconducting Quantum Electronics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1989): Volkmar Kose Superconducting Quantum Electronics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1989)
Volkmar Kose; Preface by Werner Buckel; Assisted by M Albrecht, H. Bachmair, G. Brunk, …
R3,102 Discovery Miles 31 020 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

With the surprising discovery of superconductivity at temperatures above 100 K, this field was not only brought into the public eye, but also stimulated research in universities, scientific institutions and industry, thus continuing the fascinating development which began with the discovery of the Josephson effect in the sixties. Cryoelectronics has become a special branch of cryophysics and cryotechnics and today plays a prominent role whenever high resolution and precision measurements are required. Motivated by this development, seven years ago scientists working in cryoelectronics in the Federal Republic of Germany felt the necessity for regular meetings allowing a free exchange of ideas and results achieved. Seminars under the title of "Kryoelektronische Bauelemente" were held for the first time at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig in 1982 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Walther MeiBner, a pioneer in superconductivity. Since then, meetings have been held every year at different venues in Germany. It is now felt that the status of this field necessitates a review of the results of the past, a description of the current state of the art, and a discussion of future perspectives. This book, entitled SUPERCONDUCTING QUANTUM ELECTRONICS is a collection of invited lectures and contributions which will inform the reader on the most interesting problems involving fundamentals, sensitive detectors and precision metrology being studied by different groups.

War and Rural Life in the Early Modern Low Countries (Hardcover): Myron P Gutmann War and Rural Life in the Early Modern Low Countries (Hardcover)
Myron P Gutmann
R3,084 Discovery Miles 30 840 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In addition to famine and disease, war had a considerable impact on rural society in early modern Europe. Myron Gutmann studies this impact through a systematic analysis of military, economic, and demographic variables as they affected the Basse-Meuse area in Eastern Belgium and the Netherlands between 1620 and 1750. Originally published in 1980. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

The Origin and Prevention of Major Wars (Paperback, New): Robert I Rotberg, Theodore K. Rabb The Origin and Prevention of Major Wars (Paperback, New)
Robert I Rotberg, Theodore K. Rabb; Contributions by Robert Gilpin, John F. Guilmartin, Myron P Gutmann, …
R1,053 Discovery Miles 10 530 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Since the development of the modern state system in Europe four centuries ago, there have been ten general wars involving a majority of the major powers and a high level of casualties. Another major war is difficult to conceive of, since it would presumably be the last such conflict, and yet it is not an impossibility. In this volume a distinguished group of political scientists and historians examine the origins of major wars and discuss the problems in preventing a nuclear war.
