In this book, world-renowned theatre artist Pamela Howard OBE shows
how her life has always been part of the art of making theatre.
Part memoir, part a personal account of artistic creation, it is a
work of art in its own right. Its 12 chapters, accompanied by
original drawings, offer insights into Pamela Howard's creative
world and the journey through life of a celebrated artist, ranging
from her early life and influences, to her time at art college and
the inspiration she gained from travelling the world. Following the
trajectory of her life, the 12 'dreams' are poised between memory
and history and give an account of an artist's growth, resilience,
working patterns, and life-changing encounters with remarkable
personalities and artists, as well as the practical side of working
in the theatre, in visual arts and in education. Her art tells
unexpected stories of little-noticed people and emigre communities,
and makes performance for diverse audiences from the unique
experience of one's own life. Pamela Howard's dreams have led her
to work across the globe and teach and inspire several generations
of theatre makers, scenographers, designers and visual artists. The
Art of Making Theatre passes on that inspiration afresh and
demonstrates that being an artist is not a one-off project but a
way of life.
The third edition of Pamela Howard's What is Scenography? expands
on the author's holistic analysis of scenography as comprising
space, text, research, art, performers, directors and spectators,
to examine the changing nature of scenography in the twenty-first
century. The book includes new investigations of recent production
projects from Howard's celebrated career, including Carmen and
Charlotte: A Tri-Coloured Play with Music, full-colour
illustrations of her recent work and updated commentary from a wide
spectrum of contemporary theatre makers. This book is suitable for
students in Scenography and Theatre Design courses, along with
theatre professionals.

Praise for Savannah's Black "First Ladies"
"The women profiled here] are valuable role models for women,
young and old, to admire and emulate. It should be required reading
for any participants in a program working with young women in
Savannah and the surrounding area."
-Otis S. Johnson, PhD., Mayor, City of Savannah
"I found it to be informational, invigorating, and inspiring. It
gives me the courage to take the high road in spite of challenges."
-Annie P. Wimbish, Ed.D, Superintendent of Schools, Hattiesburg, MS
"These compelling stories are inspiring and will serve to
encourage women, especially little African-American girls, to
embrace their personal power and forge forward."
-Bernetta Bryant Anderson, President, Hudson Hill Community
The phrase "never been done before" wasn't a roadblock for the
women profiled in Savannah's Black First Ladies, Vol. 1. This
remarkable collection of short biographies recognizes
African-American women in Savannah, Georgia, who were pioneers in
their chosen professions. You'll meet educators, police officers,
politicians, doctors, and others who went where no one had gone
before; in many cases, their professions were closed to women.
The trials and tribulations that these women endured to fulfill
their calling is a true testimony of their perseverance and
strength. They chose not to give up or give in, but to press
forward and see their dreams come to fruition-and in so doing,
helped open doors for the generations of African-American women
that followed.
