This book addresses the structural and biological properties of the
extracellular matrix component and glycosaminoglycan polymer
hyaluronan (or hyaluronic acid, HA). The book discusses various
aspects of HA biology, e.g., HA synthesis and degradation, as well
as the role of HA in embryogenesis, development, and cell
maintenance. The reader will learn about the role of HA in
different tissues as well as its biological activities triggered by
the interaction with different HA receptors. A closer look is had
at the involvement of HA in human pathologies such as cancer,
kidney fibrosis and wound healing. Biotechnological and biomedical
applications for HA such as scaffold generation and drug delivery,
including the novel synthetic sulphated HA are explored. This work
will appeal to a wide readership within the extracellular matrix
and hyaluronan field. It can serve as an introduction to the field
for junior scientists but can also help senior scientists to gain a
broader view of the field beyond their area of specialization. The
series Biology of Extracellular Matrix is published in
collaboration with the American Society for Matrix Biology and the
International Society for Matrix Biology.
Unlike any other text that discusses day hospital programming, A
Guide to Creative Group Programming in the Psychiatric Day Hospital
contains protocols for the invention of new groups, saving you the
time and effort needed to create one yourself. Intended for social
workers, psychologists, and occupational therapists, this book
introduces new and unique methods on how to invent or manage groups
for a day hospital program, inpatient unit, or intensive outpatient
program. The text also includes exercises that address the topics
of motivation, self-esteem, shifting cognitive distortions, and
risk-taking in relationships. Because the protocols were created
with different types of patient groups in mind, this book contains
ideas not offered in typical treatment settings. A Guide to
Creative Group Programming in the Psychiatric Day Hospital is
designed to help clinicians capture the interest of patients and to
promote the discourse of important treatment issues by providing:
50 protocols for operating existing day hospital, inpatient or
outpatient groups advice, professional opinions, and notes from the
author to the clinician on all protocols exercises to help patients
strengthen their abilities to handle the activities of daily living
and socialization several hypothetical exercises, complete with a
list of preparations, a description of the activity, and progress
notes from observations with patient assessments numerous examples
that use parts of popular movies to create new groups and stimulate
discussion comprehensive, easy-to-follow instructions for both
clinicians and patients The protocols in A Guide to Creative Group
Programming in the Psychiatric Day Hospital contain detailed
example activities complete with worksheets, skits, sample
discussions, and hypothetical patient reactions to certain topics.
Many exercises request that the patient set goals for himself or
herself before starting a new topic. In addition, there is
suggested homework for the patient to complete after a topic has
been discussed, allowing you to monitor what your patients have
learned and how they have improved after the exercise. After
reading A Guide to Creative Group Programming in the Psychiatric
Day Hospital, you'll be ready to treat your patients using easy,
effective methods that will lead to successful group discussions
and lessen the chance of patient relapse.
This book explores contemporary developments in outdoor learning,
where the outdoors is seen as the context rather than the subject
of learning. Ranging from pathfinder pieces written by
practitioners to rigorous research-based pieces of work, the book
explores the growing interest in animals as the basis for wider
learning strategies as well as drawing together a wide range of
outdoor learning approaches for all ages. Within these two discrete
sections the contributors, who are drawn from a wide range of
practitioners, academics and researchers, describe and analyse
innovative approaches that address the need to explore alternatives
to current test-based approaches to education in the western world.
The whole offers a contemporary, informative, alternative approach
to outdoor learning for teachers, practitioners and students.
The book describes developments on some well-known problems
regarding the relationship between orders of finite groups and that
of their automorphism groups. It is broadly divided into three
parts: the first part offers an exposition of the fundamental exact
sequence of Wells that relates automorphisms, derivations and
cohomology of groups, along with some interesting applications of
the sequence. The second part offers an account of important
developments on a conjecture that a finite group has at least a
prescribed number of automorphisms if the order of the group is
sufficiently large. A non-abelian group of prime-power order is
said to have divisibility property if its order divides that of its
automorphism group. The final part of the book discusses the
literature on divisibility property of groups culminating in the
existence of groups without this property. Unifying various ideas
developed over the years, this largely self-contained book includes
results that are either proved or with complete references
provided. It is aimed at researchers working in group theory, in
particular, graduate students in algebra.

This thought-provoking collection examines the challenge of teacher
shortages that is of international concern. It presents multiple
perspectives, and explores the commonalities and differences in
approaches from around the world to understand possible solutions
for the current teacher workforce crisis. Acknowledging that
solutions to attract and retain teachers vary by country, region
and in some cases locality, the contributors scrutinise a range of
workforce planning interventions at local and government level,
including financial incentives and early career support. The book
draws on different perspectives to understand a range of problems
that negatively affect teacher recruitment and retention, unpicking
key challenges, including links between the disadvantages of
location and access to teachers for coastal and rural schools,
rising pupil numbers, declining school budgets and the role of
professional learning in raising teacher status. Abundant in
critiques, research-informed positions and context-specific
discussions about the impact of teacher workforce supply and
shortages, this book will be valuable reading for teacher
educators, educational leaders, education policy makers and
academics in the field.

collective action? In Contentious Minds, Florence Passy and
Gian-Andrea Monsch explain how cognitive and relational processes
allow activists participate in and sustain their commitment to
activism. Based on a wide array of survey and interview data with
activists engaged in protest, volunteering and unions, they
highlight how a commitment community develop shared values,
identities, and meanings through interaction. The interplay of talk
and ties enables stories and meanings to be constructed and
exchanged, conveys worldviews and intentions that are modified
through ongoing conversations, and reinforces and maintains
commitment over time. Passy and Monsch's ambitious work brings the
mind and culture back into the study of social movements and
highlights the crucial role social networks play in constructing
the communities and shared values that sustain commitment.

Political Altruism? deals with participation in political
activities aimed at defending the rights of other individuals and
groups, such as asylum seekers, immigrant workers, populations of
Third World countries, and people whose fundamental human rights
are being harmed. Solidarity movements have become an important
collective actor in contemporary western societies, yet virtually
no scholarly work up to now has addressed them theoretically and
empirically. This volume shows why political altruism is better
seen as the result of social interactions rather than of a
supposedly altruistic outburst. Contributors address the
theoretical questions at the core of social movement theory, using
country-specific studies including France, Germany, Great Britain,
Switzerland, and the US, while also examining the growing
internationalization of solidarity movements, their outcomes and
consequences.
From international press coverage of the French government's
attempt to prevent Muslims from wearing headscarves to terrorist
attacks in Madrid and the United States, questions of cultural
identity and pluralism are at the center of the world's most urgent
events and debates. Presenting an unprecedented wealth of empirical
research garnered during ten years of a cross-cultural project,
"Contested Citizenship" addresses these fundamental issues by
comparing collective actions by migrants, xenophobes, and
antiracists in Germany, Britain, France, the Netherlands, and
Switzerland.
Revealing striking cross-national differences in how immigration
and diversity are contended by different national governments,
these authors find that how citizenship is constructed is the key
variable defining the experience of Europe's immigrant populations.
"Contested Citizenship" provides nuanced policy recommendations and
challenges the truism that multiculturalism is always good for
immigrants. Even in an age of European integration and
globalization, the state remains a critical actor in determining
what points of view are sensible and realistic--and legitimate--in
society.

Dialogues on Migration Policy brings together leading American and
European scholars of immigration politics to address migration
policy. Editors Marco Giugni and Florence Passy's aim to present a
number of informed "dialogues" addressing three main theoretical
concerns in this field: the role of the national state in a
globalizing world, the determinants of policy change, and the role
of collective interests in migration policy. Adopting an
unconventional format, the novelty of Dialogues on Migration Policy
lies in the fact that it is structured around a series of debates
among authors. In each debate, expert contributors working in
different theoretical traditions and with divergent views on the
subject matter confront each other followed by a commentary from a
leading scholar based on her/his reading of these authors' views.
These lively debates are certain to engage scholars of migration,
political science, and sociology.
