Paul Green's The House of Connelly - A Critical Edition (Paperback, Critical ed.): Paul Green Paul Green's The House of Connelly - A Critical Edition (Paperback, Critical ed.)
Paul Green; Edited by Margaret D. Bauer
R1,238 R863 Discovery Miles 8 630 Save R375 (30%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Margaret D. Bauer reintroduces one of Paul Green's best plays, The House of Connelly, the first play performed (on Broadway, in 1931) by the renowned Group Theatre of New York. In so doing, Bauer also perhaps reintroduces the playwright himself, famous and well respected in his day, but largely forgotten today, except for his outdoor symphonic drama The Lost Colony, which continues to be performed every summer in Manteo, North Carolina. Green's The House of Connelly is a more traditional drama, comparable to the writing of Tennessee Williams, and Bauer asserts that this play is as good as Williams's plays and deals more directly and fully with racial issues of the early twentieth-century South than Williams did in his drama. Bauer's new edition includes both endings to the play: the tragic ending that Green wrote originally and the revised ending he wrote upon the Group Theatre directors' request. Bauer provides the writing, production, and publication history of the play; a scene-by-scene critical analysis, including an analysis of both endings; and a discussion of the 1934 film adaptation, Carolina. The play's theme is change, Bauer concludes: with both endings, Green shows that the South had to change if the people were going to survive.

Local Food and Community Development (Paperback): Gary Paul Green, Rhonda Phillips Local Food and Community Development (Paperback)
Gary Paul Green, Rhonda Phillips
R1,599 Discovery Miles 15 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Food has become an essential component in community development practice. Whether in reference to building a local or regional food system or addressing food insecurity, food has become a focus in community development approaches in many localities. Farmers markets, community gardens, farm-to-school programs, and other food-centered initiatives have been used to foster community development processes across a spectrum of desired outcomes. The surging interest in food for fostering community development draws attention to numerous applications, ranging from grassroots efforts to formal programs sponsored by the public or nonprofit sectors. These efforts are often in conjunction with local private businesses, helping create micro-businesses and supporting the small farm movement. Some regions are even considering economic development strategies of "food clusters" to promote speciality food businesses and supporting programs. This volume explores the relationships between food and community, and the various approaches for development through a selection of chapters illustrating a wide range of applications. This book is a compilation of articles published in the journal Community Development.

Paul Green and Stephen Lambert have undertaken the unenviable task of spending many days and nights searching for something, which, for the most of us, is not part of everyday life experience. In this book they take a candid look at the world of ghost hunting and the paranormal industry. They also reveal their thoughts on ghosts and hauntings, as they seek to encounter the things most people would wish to run from. All are extreme and often virgin locations. Sometimes they succeed, sometimes they fail but they will tell it as it is. No frills, no airs and no lies.

David Paul Greene, Susan L. Roberts
R1,885 Discovery Miles 18 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Enhance your OT skills with the only book to focus on activity demands of occupation and the biomechanics of sensory organs! Greene and Roberts' Kinesiology: Movement in the Context of Activity, 3rd Edition uses a comprehensive, client-centered approach to occupational therapy, including sensory-motor performance skills and socio-cultural contexts related to solving a clinical problem. It covers kinesiologic and biomechanical principles, and shows techniques for producing positive outcomes when clients face challenging activity demands in all areas of occupation. Written by OTs for OTs, this reference helps you learn how to treat clinical diagnoses as personal experiences encountered in real-life situations. Client-focused approach presents information in the same order an OT practitioner would follow to solve a clinical problem, emphasizing kinesiologic and biomechanical principles rather than mathematics and trigonometry. Nearly 300 detailed, colorful illustrations make it easier to understand how human movement relates to occupational performance. Coverage of the entire body shows how biomechanical principles apply to activity demands on the head and trunk, as well as to the upper and lower extremities. Case studies present real-life client situations, allowing you to apply concepts and solve problems. Critical thinking questions, physical activities, and interactive exercises stress clear, conceptual thinking and an understanding of real client situations. Lab Manual for Kinesiology: Movement in the Context of Activity at the back of the book offers hands-on activities including movement of the human musculoskeletal system, wheelchair stability and transfers, sensory receptors, movements of the upper extremities, and positioning of the hip, knee, and ankle. Closer Look boxes examine key topics that are complicated or need further explanation, and add information relevant to practice. NEW! Utilizing the Sensory Environment: Integrating Physics into Sensory Interventions chapter explores how the forces used in the application of hands, tools, or equipment activate the sensory receptor cells, leading to more reliable assessments and outcomes.

Computer Network Architectures and Protocols (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1982): Paul Green Computer Network Architectures and Protocols (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1982)
Paul Green
R4,122 Discovery Miles 41 220 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This is a book about the bricks and mortar out of which are built those edifices that so well characterize late twentieth century industrial society networks of computers and terminals. Such computer networks are playing an increasing role in our daily lives, somewhat indirectly up to now as the hidden servants of banks, retail credit bureaus, airline reservation offices, and so forth, but soon they will become more visible as they enter our offices and homes and directly become part of our work, entertainment, and daily living. The study of how computer networks work is a combined study of communication theory and computer science, two disciplines appearing to have very little in common. The modern communication scientist wishing to work in this area finds himself in suddenly unfamiliar territory. It is no longer sufficient for him to think of transmission, modulation, noise immun ity, error bounds, and other abstractions of a single communication link; he is dealing now with a topologically complex interconnection of such links. And what is more striking, solving the problems of getting the signal from one point to another is just the beginning of the communication process. The communication must be in the right form to be routed properly, to be handled without congestion, and to be understood at the right points in the network. The communication scientist suddenly finds himself charged with responsibility for such things as code and format conversions, addressing, flow control, and other abstractions of a new and challenging kind."

Selznick, the actress' second husband. A half century ago, Inupiat Eskimo Paul Green was dismayed by a writer who arrived in his village, stayed briefly, then flew home to print nonsense. So Green began writing down his own stories--about his life, Native foods, legends, games, animal habits, even "rubbing nose kiss." Each of these authentic stories, written in Green's distinctive voice, offered delightful insight into his culture and times. Another notable Alaskan, George Aden Ahgupuk, added his pen-and-ink drawings, and the first edition of I AM ESKIMO was released in 1959, the same year that Alaska became a state. Today this collection is a classic, translated into other languages, excerpted in several textbooks, and collectible as the first title for the fledgling publishing company that would become Alaska Northwest Books. Ahgupuk's drawings are prized among collectors and the Anchorage Museum of History and Art's permanent collection.

R814 Discovery Miles 8 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Positive shifts in attitudes mean that emphasis is now being placed on the person with dementia and their personal relationships, rather than the illness. There is also growing recognition of the significance of a person's spiritual life in forming an essential basis for their sense of identity, and in providing them with a resource for coping. Offering an inter-disciplinary approach to spirituality and personhood in dementia care, the contributors to this book are leading practitioners and researchers in the field. They provide both a theoretical structure and a practical understanding of the essential role that spirituality can play in the affirmation of personhood and identity, and of ways in which the spiritual well-being of people with dementia can be nurtured. This thought-provoking book includes chapters approaching the subject from Christian and Buddhist perspectives, discussion of inter-faith relations, and of what spirituality might mean for those not part of any faith tradition. This will be valuable reading for nurses, care workers, care commissioners and pastoral support professionals interested in a more holistic and contemplative approach to caring for people with dementia.
